Re: How to make the bat work like newsreader?
Hi David, The other reason that I segregate my e-mail is that Forte' Agent can "ignore" a thread with a single keystroke. This, as well as the "watch" key, are two of my favorite Agent features, and what I miss the most in TB. Thanks for bring them up. This isn't maintained in the filter table, and disappears when the last message in that thread is purged from the folder. While this same function could be accomplished with filters, it would be too much maintenance. Indeed. This feature isn't useful (IMHO) for non-mailing-list e-mail. I wouldn't suggest that it be implemented in The Bat! unless it was part of an integrated newsreader. This I don't agree, exactly because it's useful for mailing lists reading. Not everyone takes the trouble routing mailing-list mail to another account as you do. -- Best regards, Ming-Li The Bat! 1.46 Beta/3 | Win2k SP1 -- -- View the TBUDL archive at http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com To send a message to the list moderation team double click here: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe from TBUDL, double click here and send the message: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- You are subscribed as : archive@jab.org
Re: How to make the bat work like newsreader?
Hi Starc! well, after I suggested that we make a newsgroup, some answered that the bat already offers all functionality a newsreader would give us. So I'm asking now: how must I configure the bat to be able to read this discussion list like a newsgroup? This is off topic, and possibly not of interest, so you folks feel free to tell me to shut up. :-) I read my regular e-mail with The Bat!, and my mailing lists, including TBUDL, with Forte' Agent. I accomplish this by using a UNIX procmail filter to forward my mailing lists to an alternate POP mailbox, from which I retrieve it. The advantage of this procmail arrangement over simply using an alternate email address is that I can post with my main email address, and private mail from list members is read in The Bat!. One of the reasons I segregate my mailing list e-mail is that I want to deal with it when I have time to read newsgroups, and not as it comes in. While I can turn the message ticker off for a folder in The Bat!, it can only manage to do two the following at a time: * The new message indicator (icon wings flapping) is not triggered when new mailing list e-mail arrives. I don't want to be distracted. * The new message indicator is triggered when other new email arrives. I do want to be notified. * Mailing list e-mail is not marked read until I actually read it. Setting the filter to mark the email read seems to be the only way to accomplish the first two, but it makes it difficult for me to keep up to date. I wish that new email notification was folder-configurable, but was told by RIT that it would be difficult. It would be necessary before a newsreader integrated into The Bat! would be useful to me. The other reason that I segregate my e-mail is that Forte' Agent can "ignore" a thread with a single keystroke. It will then mark anything new coming in for that thread as read, which makes it easy to skip over conversations that are going nowhere. Since I normally am set up to view only unread messages, this means that one tap of the "i" key, and I'm blissfully ignorant of the conversation continuing. This isn't maintained in the filter table, and disappears when the last message in that thread is purged from the folder. While this same function could be accomplished with filters, it would be too much maintenance. This feature isn't useful (IMHO) for non-mailing-list e-mail. I wouldn't suggest that it be implemented in The Bat! unless it was part of an integrated newsreader. To be more specific, how can I do the following: 1. I want to be able to browse the messages while they are still on my pop server. I want to read the subject and then be able to download only the messages which I'm interested in. One user told me that this is possible, so how do I do it? Unfortunately, Agent isn't good at that. 2. I want messages that are not from TBUDL to be downloaded directly to their specific folders, so only the messages from TBUDL are kept on the server for browsing. I use Agent's filters to send each mailing list to it's own folder. 3. I want to be able to make some sorting of the messages accordint to the thread. Is the only way I can do this to sort them by subject? This is the default. No, you can choose between references, subject, author and date. References is the most convenient way to read your mail, especially if you want to have that "newsreader look-and-feel".
