Perhaps a bit off-topic, but a curiosity question here ...

2004-02-16 Thread Dirigo

(To the moderators: If you feel this message is more appropriate for
another thebat list, feel free to send along. I only belong to this
list as the present time. I do know about tbbeta, but, as of yet,
have not subscribed. Thanks in advance.)

Curiosity question here ... from time to time, my Firewall (Sygate
Personal Firewall) gives me an informational/warning message that
reads:

D:\Program Files\thebat.exe has changed since the last time you used
it. This could happen if you have updated it recently. Click Detail
to see more information (which I do look at every time ...
unfortunately it is alot of data that can't be easily cut and paste)
Do you want to allow it to access the network?

Of course, I always allow the bat to access the network so I can get
my mail ;-)) ... especially from this list! I have experienced no
problems in doing so ... yet. I'm just curious if something is going
on in the background re: the bat automatically making changes, or
whatever it might be, that would cause such a message to be generated
by my firewall software.

Is there perhaps some polling/pushing/pulling activity going on in the
background between thebat.exe and its home base, ala virus checkers,
i.e., avast!, et al, that potentially could result in changes? Checksum
calculations? that would cause such a message to be displayed. Or
should I be looking for other unknowns. Virus, trojan, malware,
spyware software supposedly all up to date, but we know their
databases are sort of an after the fact thing.

Has anyone else experienced this type of notification re: thebat.exe

Thanks in advance.

I'm using the latest version of Sygate Personal Firewall (freeware
version), and have not experienced these kinds of problems.

The only time I'm ever told that The Bat! has changed is if I update
The Bat! to a new version.

I'm using Kerio PF and have this happening from time to time, too.
Except after changing the actual (beta)exe, where it is appropriate,
it happens when I use the F11 or alt+F2 shortcuts. I suspect it
might have to do with proxy servers, as it only happens since I
installed K9 for spam filtering and MyGate for newsgroups.

When I only fetch mail for one account, no warning appears, although
the other accounts are being checked too (due to time settings), so I
can't explain this behaviour.

I use TinyFirewall 5.5 and it has a similar checksum feature but it
only alerted once after I upgraded to a later build of SecureBat Lite.
It might be that after your last update the application of the new
checksum to your existing firewall entry did not stick, so it is
comparing your very old checksum that it has in its config against the
checksum of the version you might have updated weeks or months ago and
sees it as new.

You might want to consider the possibility of going into your Firewall
management program and deleting its entry for TheBat! and letting it
recreate a new up-to-date entry based on your current executable of
TheBat!

Hope this helps

Yes happens to me virtually on a daily basis now using Kerio PFW 215.
I'd put it down to a windows thing :( and was on my long list of
things that always happen to me.
When each account starts polling the POP3 they seem to arrive. Three
of them each time requiring a click on yes.
Then it just carries on as normal. Although when it's really bad I
have to shut The BAt! and restart it. I'd thought it might be to do
with the ports changing as each account checks it's email.

Zone Alarm has done this as well, but with apps (other than TB!) that
(like in your case) were not reinstalled. I'd tell ZA over and over
again that such-and-such.exe had *not* changed and was to be allowed
unfettered access to the world but ZA kept asking anyway.

Upgrading the firewall software fixed it.
