It would be helpful to put the file which normally inform us about the
changes a new version has undergone, as 'descript.ion' or 'index.txt' or
'index' into the same ftp directory as the executable or zipped beta.
Most ftp-clients are able to autodisplay this kinda file prior to any
other activity.

For users who autodownload the file from the same server each time I can't
see that a filename change would serve any purpose; makes no difference
really. However, for users who visually check FTP for the file, then perhaps
a plaintext file named with the current version number could be placed in
the folder so that everyone can identify the release. Beyond that, the
executable could contain the version information ;)

How about placing the new files twice on the server: once for the
mirrors with always the same name, and once ofr us stupid humans who
need to know the version number?

Ahh, the joy of symlinks, all they need to do is link to the most
recent version if you select the_bat.exe, or you can note that there
are different versions if you see tb139.exe, tb141b4.exe, and
tb141.exe.

Or you're downloading it for the first time off a mirror site
and aren't really sure which is the latest version. At 0.5kbit/s you
wait for it to come down. Subscribe to TBUDL, only to realise that you
downloaded an earlier release. Drats. You wouldn't have known either.
No version number attached.

> Q: Why would you download TB if you have already updated, thus

What tipped me to the final release is that I went to look at
ftp.ritlabs.com to see what this thing about the download being 3MB
was about. I noted that the full install download was a file dated the
10th of March. Very recent. Most likely an unannounced update (I mean
unannounced on list). So I downloaded it and I was right. Earlier, I
had downloaded another copy of version 1.39 following the same
reasoning. I guess they were refreshing the folder or something,
but the same version had two different dates.

Q: Why would you download TB if you are already running it?
A: Because you know an update is available.
Q: Why would you download TB if you have already updated, thus
probably downloading the same version you have already on your machine?
A: I don't know. ;-)

However, since the downloads are always either zip files (on the beta
site) or self-extracting exe's, it should in fact be no problem to
call the compressed file "tb141.exe", which extracts into thebat.exe
and some dll's. Or "bat141b5.zip". As a matter of fact, I always
rename the compressed files right after download and before
extracting.

Q: Why do I rename the file to show the version number, right after
download?
A: Because I keep the previous version (in compressed form) for a while
until I am sure the new version really causes no problems. :-)

It's indeed reassuring to see the version number in the
download. At least you may abort the download when you see that the
version is not the desired one. Ritlabs policy here seems to be a two
edged sword because of these mirror sites. We may know better but what

The problem with this logic is that mirror sites are often not up to
date. You're never sure what version you are getting. I know I've
downloaded and installed the same version as I currently have more than

I once asked RITLabs why they insisted on keeping the the_bat.exe
filename across different versions, and they said it was so that no
matter what review you read, and no matter how old it was, you would
always be pointed to the most current version of TB.

I agree that it is confusing, but at the same time, I can really see
