Thanks Allie. Again one of the hidden secrets (to me) which makes TB essential.

Hi Havivah,

of "automatic customized reply templates?":

Actually, /you/ did ! I over-trimmed your original query and lost
the fact that the answer was in your question: "I'd like to have
customized templates pop up automatically when I reply to different
people". If you want per-people templates then the Address Book is
(kind of) the obvious answer when you think about it :-).

HDS> Nevertheless I think it would be really nice to have a button in
HDS> the Options-Quick Templates dialog that would take you right to
HDS> the AddressBook. (e.g., "edit templates in address book").

Except that there's another pointer missing here - they don't actually
have a connection. "Quick Templates" aren't templates IMHO - I think
they are better thought of as "user defined variables".

I use QTs liberally throughout my AB and default templates in the form
of %QINCLUDE="QTname" statements. Most of my actual templates are
built from custom components defined in the QTs.

HDS> Ah well, can't have *everything*

Oh, you'd be surprised :-)! IMHO it is the combination of QTs and
recipient templates that makes TB *the* most automatically expressive
e-mail client around.

HDS> Thanks for the help!

You are most welcome. Enjoy.

I'd also like to add that there are two aspects about quick templates
that you may not realize. For each quick template, you can define a
handle-name (qt handle) and then to apply it to a message, instead of
going through the menus, you may simply type .

Additionally, instead of highlighting the old template, you may also use
the %CLEAR macro in your quick template. What this will do is erase
everything in the message body and then apply the quick template.

So for example, I've personally defined a template for software tech
support with the handle name 'ts'. Whenever I wish to send a message for
tech support, I click on the browser mailto: link which will generate a
message addressed to tech support. I then type in the message body
'ts' where the default template is completely erased and
replaced with the tech support one automagically. :-)

Boy, have you! Templates may be defined individually for every folder
and for every recipient in the address book. I achieve the best
results (IMHO and for my purposes) by exclusively using Address Book
templates for groups of people (Family, Friends, Contacts, etc.) and
individuals since templates can be defined at all of these levels.

The template in use here is the one for the [EMAIL PROTECTED]
address. It includes the macro to mangle the From name and Reply to
address to produce the To: line you see above.

Take care when using folder level templates since you may be focused
on a folder while writing to an individual who would require a
different template altogether. I steer clear of these myself but this
topic was recently discussed and many others described how they
organize /their/ templates. Check out the TBUDL archives (address
below) for more info.

automatic customized reply templates?

2000-09-12 Thread Havivah D. Schwartz

Hi all,

I'm a newbie progressively learning the wonders of The Bat!'s
configuration possibilities. I'm now playing around with the
templates, but there's one thing I can't figure out how to do: I'd
like to have customized templates pop up automatically when I reply to
different people. As it stands now, I don't see any way to set up more
than one Reply template. Why does this matter when we have Quick
Templates? Well, Quick Templates are fine for composing new mail. But
as it stands now, if I understand correctly, if I want to *reply* to
an e-mail, I have to use the reply template, the one-and-only. I can't
just use one of my customized quick templates instead of the reply
template without first highlighting everything in the message editor
window and then going to "Utilities > Insert Quick Template". It
would be so much more convenient to be able to configure The Bat's
templates the same way we configure the Sorting Office filters...

so, have I just missed a way of doing this? (hoping desperately...!)

Thank you!

Havivah
