Jernej,

This reminds me of a car mechanic who I saw 30 years ago. He could not
find the electrical problem that was in the car. so he pulled out all
the electric wires and rewired the complete car. Easy and quick he
 explained.

Today the first thing the mechanic does when my car comes in is plug
it into the computer and with its newest brother you hand the car
keys to the reception who use the error log stored in the car-key to
make a workplace order. The car almost tells the mechanic what to do!

The point, we should try to make TB! not a tool for experts but for
all users out there. That means easy to configure and intuitive to
use. That sort of kills the register editing option, sorry.

BTW extra points for naming my car brand :-)

Sounds like one of the newer German or Swedish cars. Hmm, the key

Audi and Volvo I can't remember. Mercedes Benz uses a funny shaped
electronic key. A clumsy design, much bigger than a normal key, with a
big chip built into it.

Hi Jernej,

OK ... are you saying that when I backup my mail folders then if I
need to ever do a full re-install of The Bat! then simply re-importing
the backup will not be enough to get me up and running? What exactly
is stored in the Reg that would be important to me? I basically need
all my mail and my signature/s ... can't think of anything else.

OK, attached are two batch files, which automate the backup process.
You'll need to have RAR.EXE from WinRAR 3.0 somewhere in your path,
but that's all (to get RAR.EXE to the path, copy it to
C:\Windows\Command folder)

- To backup, run BATBACKUP.BAT with Bat's installation folder as
parameter. So, if you have The Bat installed in C:\Program
  Files\The Bat!\, run this

  BATBACKUP C:\Program Files\The Bat!\

  (note: don't use quotes).

- To restore, copy TheBat_backup.rar, BATRESTORE.BAT and RAR.EXE to
the root folder of the drive (you can put RAR.EXE somewhere else in
  the path) and run

  BATRESTORE

It's not perfect, but it's much easier to use than manually exporting
the registry...

Those two batch files save you from two things:
- creating a dummy account after installation (you don't even need to
re-install The Bat, just restore the backup)
- re-entering your registration code

A home just how much of a pain the current system is.

I have both my TB! installation directory and my mail base on my D:
drive. TB! uses 2 places to store its configuration, in the registry,
HKCU/Software/RIT and in some INI files in the mail directory. When I
plan on re-installing my OS, I backup the HKCU/Software/RIT key.

All you have to do then is to import the .reg file to get your Bat back.
I admit that this is not an easy solution, but I like it, because it's
fast and reliable.

   1) Point TB! at the mail folder in 'My docs' (because I keep my docs

   2) Create a stupid test account just so I can get into TB! then

   5) Change the view so that the account tree is tall and reaches top

   6) Go through all accounts checking user names for several accounts

@domain.com bit which means I have to double check all accounts.

Somewhat baffled by all this ... you're missing Tools | Backup and
Tools | Restore which do all this for you (they back up all the
accounts' properties and so on into one file which can easily be hived
off to CD-R in case of disaster).

Unfortunately the test account problem is still present - you have
to create a dummy account before you get to the menus and can do the
restore. I've put a feature request in to fix this (which is trivially
easy!), though.

although thinking about it the zoot approach of holding config info in
the database files location still seems more elegant. You don't have
to think about back-ups and restoring because your database is a
constant live back-up which can be plugged back into zoot simply by
repointing at it.

back-up and restore is still by the sounds of it a lot better than
what I was doing...
