weird import from Netscape 4.7x

2001-08-14 Thread Matt Cahill

  Hey,

I installed The Bat on my office manager's system and imported her
Netscape 4.7x mail. I was shocked to find that her new inbox now has
over 4000 messages! Switching back to Netscape, the original inbox
only has 1200 (still high...I'll discipline her later). I've killed
Dupes in The Bat, but that hasn't even made a mark on it.

  Anything I should know about?

Matt Cahill

Did you check the message subjects? If there are so many messages,
there should be many duplicate subjects...

What do you mean by disciplining? I keep all my mail for the last 2.5
years, that's 11232 messages at the moment.

BTW: *please* don't start new thread by replying to some message and
simply changing the subject. Some of us are sorting by references, and
that put your message to the "Confirm sending bug?" thread, after
"POP3 sending of email" message, which was reply, too.

That sounds interesting. But it's in the wrong thread. You'd better start
with a new message rather than "replying" to something you aren't actually
replying to.
It shouldn't be too hard to copy and paste the address manually... ;-)
The Bat! provides a very fine system to sort threads by reference number.
So, no matter what you alter or delete after having hit the reply button,
the reference number will still be the same. And it will be sorted
accordingly in my folders. You might miss some readers, because they're not
interested in the thread you "replied" to...

Cheers
Peter

weird import from Netscape 4.7x...and more!

2001-08-14 Thread Matt Cahill

Sorry about the reply fiasco folks. Didn't realize that posting entailed pasting.

I couldn't figure out why the imported Netscape mail doubled the inbox
by 2800 messages. We chose to leave it in Netscape and start fresh
with The Bat. Doing anything with that amount of mail just took too
long (ie moving, re-importing, deleting).

However, and I'm not sure if this has been reported yet, but following
a URL in Netscape 6.1 brings up two identical browser windows instead
of one. Anyone else notice this?

could it be (and I'm guessing) that the folder from Netscape wasn't
compressed? Eg, has it restored all your deleted messages as well?
I really have no idea, but it might be worth looking into.

I had the same problem with mozilla... - but i went back to IE
anyway... work still needs to be done IMO on that browser.. - hence
that solved my 'double window' problem :)
I wasn't sure if it was the way I had installed mozilla and file
associations or if it was TB... but I didn't bother looking into it...

That crossed my mind as well, but my manager seems pretty resolute
that she doesn't need to have the old Netscape mail imported...still,
as an obsessive/compulsive type, I can't help but think about it :)

Maybe I'll try that on my own system using her imported mail in a
dummy folder.

Actually, if we were talking about Netscape 6/6.01/6.1pr, I'd agree
with you, but 6.1 is pretty stable (aside from some standards compliance
issues...another story/debate). Not a big IE fan either. Oh
well...hopefully the folks at Bat will figure something out.

Thanks for the input,

 Matt
