[TCP] TCP site
Hi everyone, and Happy New Year! Since there have been a number of new members joining in the past week, I wanted to mention the changes that are coming on the TCP website. I'm converting the site to Drupal, which will give it a great new look, along with extra features like an integrated wiki and tech comm blog space for every registered member (site registration is separate from list registration). One reason for writing a tech comm blog is for project implementation notes. If you are setting up a new program or technology, you can write about stages, tips and tricks, and other items of interest in your blog so others can find them in the future. Another reason is there are topics that really don't belong on the list. Instead of starting a conversation on the list, you would write about it in your blog, then send a message to the list informing everyone there's a new topic to discuss on your blog. Then, people can comment on the post. Discussions about STC fall into this category. It's taking me longer to do the conversion than I expected it would. Some things in Drupal that have been giving me fits! :) But, the site will go live next week or the week after. If all the features aren't ready at that time, I will add them over the following weeks. Anyone interested in blog space or writing a review or other article can start now. Just write to me offlist, and I'll send you the URL for the new site. Have a great day! Lisa Gielczyk TCP Administrator __ Author Help files and create printed documentation with Doc-To-Help. Re: [TCP] New User Introduction
Great to see all of you new people joining -- bounce away with the ideas and questions! (We've all got hard heads, so it shouldn't hurt too much.) I'm Carla. Been in the business as a technical communicator for almost 20 years gasp - has it been that long?? I edit all the docs for our TechPubs group (4 writers, a graphics person, the mgr, and me). Plus, I also edit docs for other groups on request, including cross-site. In addition to being the Editor, I'm also the Translation Coordinator, which means I work with my translation vendors to get our docs translated into up to 30 languages. On top of all that, I'm the techno-geek of the group, and one of the two FrameMaker experts (Donna Jones being the other) on our team. As the resident techno-geek, I'm the one that finds all the neat utilities and plug-ins to help us get our jobs done more efficiently. I also seem to be the first stop for technical support by most of the other writers on the team when they have some kind of software problem. I'm a big proponent on single-sourcing, and we're looking to move to DITA sometime in the near future. So, all that said... [TCP] Introducing Shannon du Plessis - Newbie to the Group
Hi everyone - I imagine you will gain a fair share of new members coming to you as dissatisfied STC members who decided not to renew their STC membership for 2008. Although I'm not thrilled with the current STC mood, I am nonetheless grateful for it because otherwise I would not have known about your group from the conversations on the STC lists. I did renew and remain an STC member (Lone Writer and Independent Contractor), but hope you will welcome me anyway. I work out of my home office near Austin, Texas and am well into my tenth year of technical writing (mostly part-time) and third year doing it full time as owner of my own business. I enjoy my work and my clients, especially my online help and e-learning contracts. I get scared sometimes when a contract is ending and I don't have another one (preferably two) lined up, but somehow I end up with enough work to meet my financial needs and even some of my wants. I do aspire to bigger and better technical writing contracts and enjoy learning new things. And a cruise to someplace exotic for about a month would be cool J. I look forward to reading your posts, contributing some of my own, and being a part of your group. Happy New Year! Re: [TCP] Cross posting and duplicate messages
Lisa is a genius! I had forgotten about an old filter set up in Outlook. It was set to take any messages that came in for that other list and move them to the same folder as the TCP messages. Outlook saw the other list name in the To or CC field of the cross-posted messages and moved a copy of them there. It didn't know or care that I wasn't subscribed to the list any more, just that it found the e-mail address for the list there. Thanks for solving the mystery, Lisa! [TCP] The flight from certification
This is slightly less volatile, and more on topic for those who are tech writers or project managers. I'm noticing the first hints of a flight from certification, as people are realizing that certification doesn't do enough to filter out people appointed despite being incompetent, or for political or nepotistic reasons. This is a boon to me, because I'm unwilling to undergo PMP certification at this time and haven't noticed an overall improvement in PMP-certified people over uncertified. http://technical-writing.dionysius.com/ technical writing | consulting | development Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! [TCP] New User Introduction
I'm another STC Lone Writer refugee. I've been in the printing and publishing industry for over 30 years (God, how I hate to admit it). So, I've had the pleasure of watching the industry change from hot type to direct-to-plate. Today, I spend most of my time designing books (mostly textbooks) and managing our digital printing business that specializes in short-run print-on-demand books (think B2B Kinko's on steroids). Our client base is corporate trainers, college professors, college bookstores, and a few self-published authors. We have a brand new program that teaches K-12 educators how to coach creative writing--which is very different than teaching English. We have a new program that is designed to bridge the literacy gap by introducing writing for pleasure to very young children, then taking their best effort writing through the entire publishing cycle (writing, editing, design, marketing, production) to produce short-run classroom anthologies that bring the real world working environment into the classroom. It's VERY cool! If you think you would like to volunteer in a classroom, or sponsor this program in a classroom, please feel free to call. I'm looking forward to being a member of this discussion group. Teresa Trujillo Book Workshop/Mighty Designs 1501 E. Re: [TCP] STC Refugees (was Re: New User Introduction)
Speaking from my own experience, things are a bit wonky with the STC right now. Good people trying to do good things, but administrivia seems to get in the way, and there seems to be a disconnect between Society goals and Staff initiatives. I do hope that last bit gets sorted out. I know a few things have irked some members this year. The salary survey was nixed in favor of a paid-for model with a limited freebie option, but it's US-centric and the data is limited to the government's limited knowledge and statistics concerning tech writing. That peeved a few people. Also the recent tip of your tongue marketing campaign rubbed quite a few people the wrong way (it was complete with images of animals licking their chops). There were others, but those were more recent as the year closed. I also see a decline in the quality of communications coming out. It's not so much the content, but the delivery. Announcements tend to be lost in long articles, important info is sent in a buzzword bingo e-mail, etc. Overall, as a Senior Member and SIG Manager, I feel a bit lost, and then overwhelmed when I do catch up. I've not yet re-upped my membership for 2008. I'm still on the fence. I see a lot of potential, but if things continue the way they have been going, that potential will be lost, no matter what people put into it. Just my thoughts. Re: [TCP] STC Refugees (was Re: New User Introduction)
I'm going to answer both Bill and Sue at the same time. There have only been two times that I've seen a mass exodus of people unsubscribing from the TCP list, and both times, it was because people were hashing out STC issues. I want to provide a place where people can talk about STC and other tough issues, but not at the expense of the list. People who are interested in the topic can discuss it through the comments on the blog. This is a different function than the TCPwiki, which, for one thing, is a place where final answers can be recorded, so that people don't have to wade through the list archives or blog comments to find the resolution to a question. So, please, if you want to discuss STC, do it on a TCPblog. As other topics more suitable to a TCPblog emerge, I will let you know. Thanks for your cooperation! Re: [TCP] STC Refugees (was Re: New User Introduction)
Sounds fair, thanks for the explanation. So I guess if someone who recently left wants to write up a short blog about it on the TCP site, we should start up a comments thread. Re: [TCP] blogs (was STC Refugees)
I look at blogs as they are being used here as simply a lot of emails that don't clog up my inbox, and I can choose to read them or not. I don't see a problem if a discussion is requested to move over on the blog side of things if it is either a volatile subject or just not related to TCP. By the time such a request is made, the discussion on the main list has often passed the relevant stage for most people. However, for those are passionate about the topic and still want to discuss it, it gives them a forum to continue that doesn't annoy everyone else. :-) My $0.02, which doesn't get me very far today... Re: [TCP] The flight from certification
As long as certification is based solely on taking classes and passing tests, the only thing it tells you is that the person holding it took classes and retained the information long enough to pass the tests. If the certification is like a PE license that requires time OTJ and endorsements that verify the person has effectively worked in the areas covered by the certification, that is potentially a different matter. But OTOH, every collapsed bridge you ever saw or heard about on the news was designed and/or approved by a licensed PE... Gene Kim-Eng - Original Message - From: Bill Swallow [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'll agree that some certifications are bunk, but I disagree with you about PMP. The trick with any certification though is that those with them perform better if their supervisors either understand the certification or hold it themselves. It's the whole accountability issue and has very little to do with the certification itself. __ Author Help files and create printed documentation with Doc-To-Help. [TCP] ADMIN Site Redesign
Some people let me know they couldn't access the blog post. When I tried to access it from another account, I couldn't. Please give me a minute to work this out. I'll let you know when it's working. I'm terribly sorry for the inconvenience! Lisa On Jan 4, 2008 1:58 PM, Lisa Gielczyk (TCP ADMIN) [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi everyone, Oops... I decided to publicize the address for the redesigned TCP site so that you can start using the blog feature to offer opinions on STC renewals, but you'll need to register first (list membership doesn't transfer to the site). Once you are registered, you can start a blog, comment on someone else's blog, or contribute an article, review, or wiki item. You can also change the color scheme by going to My Account and clicking the Edit tab. I welcome comments on the redesigned site, but please keep in mind that it is not complete, and more changes will be coming. The site is at: http://techcommpros.com/drupal53/ Have a great weekend! This is why one should never allow oneself to be pushed into a release date earlier than planned and tested for.
