[Texascavers] Lots of great cave pictures
Maybe I am the last one to discover this site, but just in case it might be new to you, I strongly recommend a visit to view the pictures at this site: http://www.flickriver.com/groups/60045304@N00/pool/interesting/ I see only a few names that I recognize and I have no idea how many images are available. Set aside some serious time for your first visit. ===Carl Kunath

And this will be very handy for the victims in Myanmar since the company is practically next door (relatively speaking) in Pakistan. I looked through their whole list of products and it looks like this will be just the thing for the folks who were affected--a variety of high energy food, milk that doesn't have to be refrigerated, antidiarrhea mixture. Very cool. Maybe Myanmar's gov't will be more willing to accept aid from Pakistan than they have been from the U.S. and the rest of the world. [Texascavers] Perfect Mothers Day Gift -- For Cavers!
Thank your mom this Mother's Day by protecting caves! Whatever she did, however she did it, your mother brought you up right, to become a caver.whether she intended to or not! Caving probably changed your life, by putting you on a road to adventure and exploration, and giving you a special group of good friends like no others. Maybe even led you to your partner or soul mate. For such a special mother, flowers or jewelry don't cut it. Thank Mom by making a donation in her name to the NSS! Contributing to the Cave Acquisition Fund means your mom will help the NSS and cave conservancies purchase caves to protect them, and protect access by cavers. A contribution to the Endowment Fund would mean mom would be helping ensure the future of your Society. Interested? Go to the NSS Web page www.caves.org/donate to see a full list of special Funds. You may donate securely online or print a pdf form to send by fax or regular mail. Perhaps it´s time to say "Thanks mom, for raising me up to be a caver!" This is just an idea for those so inclined. >From your NSS Fund Raising Committee. [ot_caving] Fox News
Interesting little story about the big sinkhole down there close to Houston. But did anyone else notice how clueless the anchorperson/reporter sounded? I mean - there's nothing new about about on-screen news persons being cited as unbelievably stupid, but I have to wonder if there are others out there who feel this trend continues to get deeper and deeper... For the past few years my ears have been picking up on a tendency for the newscaster's inflection being WAY OFF for the material they are reading, as though the teleprompter is feeding them word by word rather than in sentences or paragraphs which their brains could possibly pre-decipher before regurgitating the information verbally. In college, when I worked at the ABC affiliate in Shreveport - I was a little surprised to discover that the newscasters (of that time) actually wrote their own copy. The teleprompter of the day displayed at least three lines of text at a time. The teleprompter was a black and white television screen in reverse image which reflected up to a piece of glass angled at about 45 degrees - which was positioned directly in front of the camera lens. The result was that they were looking at the camera lens while reading their copy. You could see their eyes moving back and front of the camera (but they were reading back words that they themselves had written up). But yeah - getting to know a little about these people did confirm they were indeed shallow and not exactly candidates for Mensa. Back in the old days, reporters were reading from actual sheets of paper. I remember I was impressed by the newscasters who could scan ahead several lines at a time and then look back up at the camera as they "read back" what they had just scanned. This was typically done with perfect inflection. By the way - I'm getting WAY off topic here. Where I was going with this - is the pathetic "conservatist nature" of the Fox News Organ. Along with the story on the web page about the 'Sinkhole De Mayo' - I saw a link about some gaffe by author/writer Steven King. Apparently Mr. King said something to a group of students about the importance of READING. He said something like "reading is important - if you *know* how to read, you're bound to get better jobs - if you *don't*know how to read you'll end up in the ARMY going to Iraq or some place like that.." I WAS DUMBFOUNDED by the commentators response on this. An insipid pretty lady with a big red ribbon around her neck (which apparently covered cleavage exposed by her low cut dress) - the voice deflection of an oxycotin user - she, a third person commentator - rattled on about Stephen King being "brain dead". So within a short period of time - there's at least three Fox News personalities making personal attacks on Mr. Stephen King - one asking the other if he had suffered brain damage by being hit by that pickup truck several years ago - and criticizing his body of work - a diatribe that goes on for about 5 minutes - which had very little to do with what Mr. King had actually SAID! All these morons were doing - it appeared - was attempting to discredit Steven King, because he inferred that the ARMY is for stupid people? Boy, that Pat Tillman dude sure made an intelligent choice... (Too bad his patriotic motivation was so terribly misguided.) So I watched a few other little Fox News video clip features. One that caught my eye was Hillary Clinton vs Obama - so I watched it too. WOULD YOU BELIEVE these axehandles brought up *Monica Lewinski*?!?!?! They actually got into the Clinton's legacy of being a smudge on the character of the WhiteHouse... *whew! * Could these people actually BELIEVE the crap they're saying? Or is someone in "the regime" paying them big bucks to say things that make them look very, very stupid? -WaV

[ot_caving] knots 101
YouTube has dozens of videos on the subject of knots. For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpHnwMaEX88&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EygGgS6iqvM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EygGgS6iqvM So the questiona I have now are, which of the videos on the web is the best? And should the winner get an award? Since it would be a caving award, I think there would have to be something caving related to the video, such as the knot being tied underground with formations in the background. RE: [ot_caving] rising gas prices
Good post, David. The rising cost of fuel, namely diesel, has definitely affected us. As a matter of fact, my wife now drives my truck and I take her car to work, as she has a much shorter drive than I do. To answer your query below: Is it affecting your budget yet? YES! Have you lightened your basket at the grocery store? YES! Have you put off getting a hair cut or any other things you used to take for granted? Not applicable. I shave my head. Now, if the prices of Mach III's go up... Are you planning on skipping any major events like the NSS Convention, OTR, TCR, etc? YES! Have you cut back on any activities yet? Movies? YES! Eating out? YES! Trips to the store? YES! Road-trips? YES! Went to New Orleans last month and used up the last of our tax refund. It was cheaper to fly than drive. Caving? YES! Sex? NO! Vasectomy in place, thankfully! Later, Mark

Gas prices at the pump are sure to be around $ 3.60 across Texas by next week. Is it affecting your budget yet? Have you lightened your basket at the grocery store? Have you put off getting a hair cut or any other things you used to take for granted? Are you planning on skipping any major events like the NSS Convention, OTR, TCR, etc? I am trying to accelerate less and brake less while driving, but that is hard to do in traffic, and when you are in a hurry. I am trying to turn off lights and tv's in the house when they are not being used. Have you cut back on any activities yet? Movies?Eating out? Trips to the store? Road-trips? Caving? Sex? [ot_caving] side-mounted flashlights
Here is a link for a $ 30 bracket to mount a flashlight on the side of your helmet: http://www.inboardhelmetlights.com./firehelmetlight.htm I think most cavers use lightweight plastic ties. The plastic ties are more practical for caving. They are lighter weight, readily available, and can be tightened to fit any shape or size of flashlight. In my opinion, with the arrival of tiny 2 watt LED flashlights, it makes sense to have these as side-mounted lights for back-up. In this age of LED caving, a real caver should never have to fumble in their pack in the dark for a light source, especially while on rope or in a precarious situation. Government to "give away" 127 million dollars to study filling underground voids with CO2. http://www.news.com/8301-11128_3-9937986-54.html?tag=ne.fd.mnbc Why does this study need to cost taxpayers 127 million dollars? The final results are obvious. The CO2 is going to be absorbed into the surrounding rock formation and eventually contaminate the area. I wish they would pay me 127 million dollars for that information. This plan obviously would not work in karst areas, but let them pay a geophysicist to write a report on that, so that it can end up in the giant warehouse where the government stores all of these reports. It would be much more practical to just freeze the CO2 into square frozen cubes and store them on a sand dune in Death Valley. According to various web news agencies, such as the New York Times, there is a news event concerning the karst region of Abkhazia. The Bush administration accused Russia of acting provocatively against Georgia by moving troops to the breakaway region of Abkhazia and shooting down a remotely piloted aerial vehicle, increasing the risk of armed confrontation. A White House spokeswoman, Dana Perino, urged Russia to restate its support for Georgia's sovereignty, and Georgia to show restraint. The number one cave on my list of caves to visit before I croak is in Abkhazia. http://www.mountain.ru/article/article_display1.php?article_id=2226 We need a cave like that near Houston.
