[Texascavers] RE: World's deepest shaft ?

2008-10-30 Thread Minton, Mark
  Jerry Atkinson posted:

IS this the world's deepest cave?

Not even close. At -1020 m (Bob Gulden's figure of record,
http://www.caverbob.com/wdeep.htm) (-1026 m in Sun report), Qikeng Dong is
83rd deepest in the world. Deepest is Krubera /Voronja at -2191 m, more than
_twice_ as deep! Qikeng Dong is the first 1000-m deep cave in China, however.

Miao Keng (known as China's big shaft) is a 506 metre deep shaft

According to Gulden's list http://www.caverbob.com/pit.htm it is a
491-m shaft, which is the figure Erin Lynch gives. She keeps the database of
the Tianxing caves. It is number 7 in Gulden's list. There is even another
one in China that is deeper. Deepest is Vrtoglavica in Slovenia at 603 m. I
know that some of the deeper shafts are open to the surface, although Bob does
not note that in his list. It is possible this is the deepest in-cave shaft.

B!

You should be receiving your TSA ballot for 2009 officers if you did not
vote at TCR. We tried to have some people vote at TCR, and to keep the
records so that we would not have to be spending on so much money on
mailings. If you do not receive a ballot in the next couple of days, and
you feel you need one, please email me with all of your mailing information.
Other complaints or comments may be sent this way also, but I may or may not
be the one who can help.

Please drop you cards in the mail as soon as possible, but they must be
postmarked by November 10th to count.

Thanks and Happy Halloween. Haunt Underground!

I attempted to not send ballots to anyone who voted at TCR, and hopefully my

[Texascavers] cave restoration proposed in Veracruz

2008-10-30 Thread Mixon Bill
Sergio Humberto Aguilar Rodríguez (aguilar.ser...@gmail.com) is
proposing to restore a volcanic cave in Xalapa, Veracruz, as a tourist
attraction. Knowing of the work that Texas cavers have done in
Bustamante, NL, he contacted the AMCS to find out if anyone has
suggestions or advice. In particular, contact info for cavers in that
area would probably be most useful. I am appending his proposal;
Google does an apparently decent job of translating it, if necessary.

y equipo.

Also, please consider helping out with the Longhorn Cavern Dig next
 weekend, Saturday, November 1st.

We will be meeting at the visitors' center at Longhorn Caverns State
Park at 9 AM and caravan from there to the Crownover entrance needing
 to be dug out.

Please bring any tools and equipment that you might think is
necessary, i.e., shovels, buckets (lots of good, sturdy ones), pigs or

sleds for hauling dirt down the passageway, pick axes, etc., as well
as your own water, food, and camping gear.

Lyndon Tiu will have a campsite at Inks Lake SP for those arriving
Friday night or you may camp at the Longhorn Caverns SP Picnic area
 both nights.

Lyndon will post a note at the Park Office letting you know where he
 is camped at.

Thanks and have a good weekend!

Chris - great to meet you at Jewel Cave last weekend. Hard to realize that it
was 49 years ago that I started polking around in there. I found myself
looking carefully at the exposures both inside the cave and in the
reconstituted Minnelusa road cut on the west side of Hell Canyon. There are
still quite a number of unresolved questions about the geology of the Black
Hills caves. I feel moved to revisit some of them.

Contact me off-line so I have your email.

[Texascavers] Robber Baron Celebration November 8 9

2008-10-30 Thread Linda Palit
As you get ready for Halloween and associated trips this weekend, remember
we have a great caving opportunity next weekend and an opportunity to help
Texas Cave Management Association.

An Open House will be held at Robber Baron on Saturday the 8th, and TCMA
needs your help herding the neighborhood. Check out information on the cave
at http://www.tcmacaves.org/robberbaron/rb_schedule.htm (note the links at
the top for map and more information on the cave. It's in San Antonio, and
we are celebrating a new gate and renovations on November 8th and 9th.

All Texas Cavers are invited.

On Saturday -

* 9am to 3pm we will host the neighborhood and need assistance herding
people inside the cave - you do not have to know the cave to help. We need
some people stationed in specific locations.
* 3pm to 6pm - Teach any caver who wants the basic lay out of the cave
so you can lead your own trips in the future
* 6pm to whenever - BBQ at Cave Without a Name and camping Saturday
night

On Sunday - We have set up a trip to Spring Creek Cave - a beautiful but
easy water cave which you can visit for a short distance in caving clothes
or see the entire cave if you bring a wet suit.

More details will follow if you decide to come.
http://www.tcmacaves.org/robberbaron/rb_schedule.html

Please RSVP to me, with information as to when you will arrive and which
events will you be participating in. We really need accurate counts for
food, camping, and housing. Friday night if you need housing we will find
you a bed or a floor. Saturday night there is camping at Cave Without a
Name.

It's going to be a great weekend, and we hope to see lots of Texas Cavers.

Thanks!

Linda

[ot_caving] THE COLONEL AND LINCOLN

2008-10-30 Thread Gill Ediger

At 10:14 AM 10/30/2008, Fritz Holt wrote:

In reference to:

COMING FROM A RETIRED COLONEL,

The words are but nominally any of those three.
It takes little or no strength, power, or courage
to state one's silly opinion--at least not in the
USA where what one says and even how one says it
are consider freedoms. Being a Colonel--retired
or otherwise--carries about as much credibility
as a fire chief, an Indian Chief, or KFC. They
are a dime a dozen and each endowed with their
own prejudices tempered by the uncivilized
viewpoints of one dedicated to war-mongering, not
peace as some plasticizing politicians and
self-proclaimed patriots would have us believe. I
was in an Army hospital ward with several of them
who got old and shit themselves just like everybody else. Colonel-Schmernel

33 Senators Voted Against English as America’s
Official Language on June 6, 2007.

And neither was that courageous; it was good
common sense and showed quite a bit of
understanding that the US is a melting pot of
many different ethnic groups speaking a good many
native languages on their way toward being good
United States Americans and voters in Senatorial
races. Keep in mind that in addition to a
veritable panoply of Native American [sic: they
immigrated too] languages and dialects which most
Americans (North, South, and Central--by way of
pinning it down) don't have a very good handle on
in the current century, a good many more Latin
Americans speak Spanish than do English and the
Brazilian Americans speak Portuguese (We won't
mention the Guianas). That 2 North American
countries speak predominently a version of
imported English offers no obvious reason why the
United States Americans should voluntarily and
arbitrarily limit themselves to that tongue--for
the conduct of business or anything else. We are
living in a very much global society and a very
much global economy and damned well better get
good at it or be left behind. Isolationism is a
wad shot long ago. A multilingual population is a
relative asset within such an environment. It's
also more interesting, educational, and improves one's self-awareness.

On Wed. 6 June 2007, Colonel Harry Riley, USA, Ret. wrote:

Senators:
Your vote against an amendment to the

It truely is. It is astounding that such a silly
amendment was ever offered. To what purpose was
it made? There is not one damned thing that would
be improved by limiting one's access to the
knowledge of the world of the future soley to the
vector of English, and much that could be lost or
hindered. Come on everybody, let's let our
pointless prejudices make us dumb--really dumb.

On D-Day, no less, when we honor those that
sacrificed in order to secure the bedrock,
character and principles of America,

What bedrock, character and prinicles are
those? The right to speak the language one is
fluent in? How many of those who sacrificed spoke
Navajo as their first language? How many Spanish?
How many Ebonics? During the Revolutionary War
many spoke German. You don't have to be anything
special to sacrifice in order to secure, etc;
you don't have to speak any special
language--especially not English. You just gotta
be the poor smuck who got suckered into going off
to war and dying for your country--and generally
middle class or lower. And a war that's not
really doing anything for your
country--certainly nothing worth dying for, however patriotic it may be.

I can only surmise your vote reflects a loyalty to illegal aliens.

Why would that be? By joining the US Army and
going off to sacrifice, almost any illegal
alien--whatever language he or she spoke as a
child or to his or her kids or while having
sex--is eligible to become as US citizen. They
can even take the pledge in a foreign language if
they want. Or if they've had their throats ripped
out by shrapnel they don't have to speak any language at all. Just sign here.

I don't much care where you come from. What
your religion is. Whether you're black, white,
or some other color...male or
female..Democrat, Republican or Independent...

Well that's good; he's showing a little open-mindedness now. Scarey.

But I do care when you are a United States
Senator representing Citizens of America ...and
Vote against English as the official language of the United States

Ah, did he say representing the Citizens of
America (assuming he meant the Citizens of the
United States of America, not ALL Americans)?
Yes, they are representing the citizens--all the
citizens: those who speak English, those who
speak Spanish, those who speak Korean, those who
speak Chinese, those who speak Cheyenne, those
who speak Yidish, those who speak Arabic, all
those who just speak, whatever language it might
be. Those Senators are representing not
