As Linda Palit said a few days ago:

You should be receiving your TSA ballot for 2009 officers if you did not
vote at TCR. We tried to have some people vote at TCR, and to keep the
records so that we would not have to be spending on so much money on
mailings. If you do not receive a ballot in the next couple of days, and
you feel you need one, please email me with all of your mailing information.
Other complaints or comments may be sent this way also, but I may or may not
be the one who can help.

Please drop you cards in the mail as soon as possible, but they must be
postmarked by November 10th to count.

I will count all ballots postmarked November 10 or before.

Too bad TAG-Net only comes out once a day. Here is what I posted there (which
hasn’t come out yet) after Aughey’s recent post:

Ah, wouldn’t we all hope that were the case! Alas, it is not. Granted, this
is another piece of the puzzle, but even more so it is a glaring case of the
media taking a single report and blowing out of proportion to the context, much
like the recently-touted “barotrauma” ballyhoo regarding bats and wind
turbines. I just got back from the North American Symposium for Bat Research
where both topics received the lion’s share of attention, and believe me, we
are a long way from resolution on either.

[ot_caving] another cheap LED flashlight review

2008-10-31 Thread David
Sears has a new cheap flashlight that I have been wanting to test.

 http://www.dorcy.com/products.aspx?p=412495

So I traded in my last purchase for it.

It is a Dorcy product, and the label says HIGH PERFORMANCE L.E.D.

The product looks good on the outside for a flashlight under $ 15.

It has a very interesting hole on the end for hanging, and also a fold-out
carabiner. This part is a good design.

The flashlight did not work straight out the box. I had to diagnose it,
and bend a tap that connects the switch to the headpiece. This took
a while to figure out.

The light pattern was one of the worst I have seen on an LED light.

The light claims to float, but only looked water-resistant.

If it were not for the poor light pattern, I would recommend this light for
newbies to take to caves where there is walking passage as light to
carry inside of their cavepacks.

I would have also recommended it for camping or overnight hikes, but
I can't.

The flashlight is very lightweight, but large. For its size, it
could accomodate
much larger batteries or more batteries.

This flashlight was first designed as a halogen light, and it only has a LED
module in it. That is good in that you can easily replace the module.

I suspect the flashlight would survive a 3 foot drop test or maybe even
higher.

It is too bad the light pattern sucked. It does shine a long spotlight for
a 1/2 watt light, so you could use it to shine light up into a dome or a pit.

The switch does seem more rugged than other lights in the $ 15 price
range.

I don't see an easy way to modify the lens to diffuse the light?

[ot_caving] lithium-ion batteries

2008-10-31 Thread David
This is probably old news to those of you who use
gadgets with lithium-ion batteries.

One of my favorite flashlights is my old Inova T4.
It uses a proprietary lithium-ion battery pack.

Unfortunately, I haven't used it in a few months, and
I let it become discharged.

The battery is dead. I think I have had it about 2 years
now, but maybe longer.

http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/yhst-25924480583388_2023_25554487

According to one web-site:

Some lithium-ion batteries fail due to excessive low discharge. If
discharged below 2.5 volts per cell, the internal safety circuit opens
and the battery appears dead. A charge with the original charger is no
longer possible. Some battery analyzers (Cadex) feature a boost
function that reactivates the protection circuit of a failed battery
and enables a recharge. However, if the cell voltage has fallen below
1.5V/cell and has remained in that state for a few months, a recharge
should be avoided because of safety concerns.

To prevent failure, never store the battery fully discharged. Apply
some charge before storage, and then charge fully before use.

My battery can only be ordered online and cost over $ 31.00
( not very practical for caving, Right? )

[ot_caving] LED worklight

2008-10-31 Thread David
Here is a very expensive light for having around camp for cooking or for
working on your car.

http://s.sears.com/is/image/Sears/00928103000?qlt=90,0resMode=sharpop_usm=0.9,0.5,0,0

The light, the charger, and the lithium-ion battery cost $ 140 plus tax
at Sears, and each appears to be sold separately.

Since the battery is 20 volts, the LED's are possibly pushed to their
maximum output.

I will not be testing this one.

Would someone else like to give it a try?

For $ 140, it should light up your whole campsite pretty good. Right?

I would also think you would get 2 or 3 nights of light on a single charge.

It probably doesn't weigh as much as other worklights, so it would be more
portable.
