[Texascavers] San Marcos Springs study is funded :
Study of San Marcos Springs gets $1 million Texas State University-San Marcos launches program to measure the springs' water level, gauge how usage of the Edwards Aquifer affects the San Marcos River. By Andrea Lorenz AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF Wednesday, July 15, 2009 SAN MARCOS — A $1 million windfall will allow the River Systems Institute at Texas State University-San Marcos to create a program to monitor the San Marcos Springs, an outlet of the Edwards Aquifer and home of several endangered species, university and institute officials announced Tuesday. The funding, payable in two $500,000 installments over two years by the Texas Legislature, creates the San Marcos River Observing System, which will include various instruments to measure whether and how much the removal of water from the aquifer in San Antonio and other locations affects the San Marcos Springs and San Marcos River. This spring is the trigger for actions in San Antonio and beyond, said Andy Sansom, executive director of the River Systems Institute. The new observation system will help us understand the resource enough so the (San Marcos) Springs will continue to flow as Central Texas develops. Sansom said the majority of the $1 million will be spent on scientific instruments installed over the next two years at the springs, located under Spring Lake at the headwaters of the San Marcos River. The springs are the last outlet of the Edwards Aquifer as the water flows east from the San Antonio area. The springs were flowing20at 88 cubic feet per second Monday, less than half the historical average monthly flow for July. The current drought conditions that we're in have been brought to the forefront of the public's mind, Texas State President Denise Trauth said. Those have been issues worked on by (the university's) faculty for many, many decades. The project is important in terms of the sustainability and availability of water resources, said state Rep. Patrick Rose, D-Dripping Springs, who along with state Sen. Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio, pushed for the money for the new program. It's easy to sell a program as good as this, Rose said. The San Marcos River Observing System will be managed by Sansom and Thomas Hardy, an expert in ecohydraulics and river system modeling who was formerly a researcher and professor at Utah State University. Hardy said that once in place, the system will help everyone understand the value of the springs as a natural resource to the area and state. http://www.news-journal.com/news/content/region/legislature/stories/2009/07/15/0715sanmarcos.html

Poor Gill! I really don't mean to snap down your throat. Using my feeble powers of observation I detect a little tension surrounding the entire topic of ICS, so I read this email and automatically assumed the worst...EVERYONE helping out with ICS is INCREDIBLE and I'd knife-fight anyone to the death that would detract from their efforts that being said, I don't want to knife-fight someone who is trying to make me laugh! So my apologies for being pricky...well, plus, I guess I didn't see the point, even in jest...b/c anyone who is in the way isn't paying attention to your emails anyway! They might even be over in Kerrville...IN THE WAY! :) Mal On Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 1:27 PM, Geary Schindel gschin...@edwardsaquifer.org wrote: We’ll, I actually found Gil’s post pretty funny. Is there any noticeable flow at the swimming hole closest to the camping area. maybe some folks working this past weekend can reply Swimmability Study by the Upper Guadalupe River Authority Environmental Laboratory. [Texascavers] Final call for projectors and laptops for ICS
Dear cavers and fellow speleologists, I am looking for a Dell 2400MP as back-up for some important ICS presentations. If you are driving and it would be convenient, please bring your Dell or any other brand projector. We just can't have enough insurance. Laptops with current USB connectivity and the ability to open Powerpoint and other likely programs are also welcomed. While I'm at it, if you have an extra 25 + foot extension cord and multi tap surge protector or power strip that you can bring, please do so. I have secure storage!!! Be sure to boldly label whatever you bring. I guess that applies to everything you bring to Kerrville, not just A/V stuff. We don't want lost and found to get too full!! Feel free to let me know what you are planning to bring. Here's thanking in advance, George, Bill and Forrest for what they are bringing. Rick Corbell- 15th ICS A/V coordinator - rlcorb...@hotmail.com --cell-210-313-6084 p.s. My name and phone number will be posted by every projector but, I am looking for a couple of folks to walk session rooms each morning and after the lunch break to check for A/V issues. So, if you know you are going to be in one of the buildings regularly and can do this, it would save lots of footsteps for the A/V crew. Re: [Texascavers] Final call for projectors and laptops for ICS
Rick, I'll be arriving at the ICS on the 17th, probably early evening, at the latest, early morning 18th. I'll have my laptop with me, and I can bring the extension cord and a power strip. Being the geek I am, I have quite a bit of extra computer paraphenlia laying around. I do not have an extra projector though. If anything comes up between today and Friday that you need, let me know and I'll do my best to grab it for you. Sorry Rick, I don't have a distribution splitter, but we can probably rig something up with a PC if you can't find one. Most PC's that have multiple video outputs can be configured to mirror the signal. My mac has 4 video outputs that I can loan to you if necessary (it's not a laptop though, its a full desktop). [Texascavers] A Public Service Announcement
Public Service Announcement Warning: if you have recently purchased a ticket to a convention in Kerrville Texas, are a Texas caver, hang out with Texas cavers or are friends with a Texas caver you may have contracted Irritable Caver Syndrome They symptoms include snappiness, headaches, a feeling of being overwhelmed, selfless laboring, complaining about the heat, manic disinfection of caving gear, and in extreme cases suicidal thoughts (hang in there Joe). There is no known treatment or cure for I.C.S. There are ongoing clinical trials being conducted to see if alcohol is effective against I.C.S., though the treatment is at least a five years away from FDA approval. Some Cavers have vaccinated themselves for I.C.S. using isolation and a radical holistic treatment known as turning your computer off. This treatment is untested and is not recommended as reports have indicated there are extremely detrimental and painful withdrawal syndromes. Speculation has been made that death could even occur in at least one case (achem, David). Scientists who have been tracking the spread of I.C.S. have concluded that it will simply run its course given enough time. They estimate that most cases of I.C.S. will have recovered by July 26 though some sufferers may experience the effects longer and in some cases permanent damage may result. They recommend staying hydrated and resting as often as possible in between driving, trip leading and manning security. Avoid touching other cavers especially around the mouth as they may bite unexpectedly. Be prepared in case you get sick and need to stay home for a week or so; a supply of over-the-counter medicines, alcohol-based drinks, tissues and other related items might be useful and help avoid the need to make trips out in public while you are sick and contagious. Employees who are well but who have an ill family member at home with I.C.S. can go to work as usual. These employees should monitor their health every day, and take everyday precautions including yoga, meditation and massage to relieve vicarious stress. Alcohol-based drinks are also effective. If they become ill, they should notify their supervisor and stay home. Employees who have an underlying medical condition or who are pregnant should call their health care provider for advice. Federal, state, and local community planners are working together to ensure that I.C.S. treatments are developed and will be delivered to the affected area as soon as possible. Many cities, states, and territories have already received I.C.S. supplies. After N.S.S. sends medicine to a state or city, control and distribution of the supply is at the discretion of that state or local grotto. Most states and cities also have their own medicines that they can access to treat infected persons. *Note: Much of the information in this document is based on studies and past experience with seasonal events like TSA conventions. NSS believes the information applies to Irritable Caver Syndrom as well, but studies on this epidemic are ongoing to learn more about its characteristics. [Texascavers] RE: getting a ride to ICS for Kasia Biernacka from Poland
Bill and Kasia, if you know that there is going to be a shuttle service (for example from San Antonio Airport to ICS) that would be useful to know what their schedule would be and where people would have to meet them. There is indeed shuttle service provided from the San Antonio airport to ICS on Saturday (I'm taking it earlier in the day). Note that this service is available _only_ from San Antonio, not from Austin or any other airport. It's a bit late to be setting it up, but as far as I know it is being arranged on a custom basis depending upon when people's planes arrive. Here's the information that was sent out back in June: Many of you are planning to fly into the San Antonio International Airport and then travel to Kerrville. The ICS will provide free transportation from the airport to Kerrville on 18-19 July and from Kerrville to the airport on 26-27 July. To reserve transportation, please contact our Airport Committee at airp...@ics2009.us and send your flight information and arrival times. If you are traveling with your family, provide each person's name. If you are arriving by train, we encourage you to take a taxi to the airport to join the free ICS shuttle. All requests must be received by 7 July 2009. Requests after that date will be filled only if there is space available. Please contact our Airport Committee soon. As you can see, the deadline has passed, but if they're already planning to go to the airport that night and there is room, Kasia should be able to get a ride. Good luck! We are trying to connect her up with someone. I have offered to pick her up at the airport but Vickie and I will not be leaving until around 4pm on Sunday due to work requirements here. Anyway, thanks for your hard work. Geary ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- The point is still that nobody (well, nearly nobody) can get a free ride for an event like this, no matter how much they volunteer. The meeting of financial obligations requires that money be collected from all who officially register for the event--again, no matter how much time and effort they volunteer. Volunteers can be considered to be serving above and beyond the call of duty but still they pay full price if they are going to attend the event. Those extraneous volunteers who are not going to attend the event can and will be dealt with on a special basis as required by the peculiarities of the event and by unique and special arrangements. It's the same with TCR and TSA Convention and other such events. Even the cooks and registration workers are expected to register and pay the registration fee. They may be reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses but are not supposed to be getting in for free--though inevitably some do due to sloppy registration practices. We have never been severely overbearing when it comes to registration enforcement. We trust our Texas cavers to put logic and sense of duty above personal hyperbole. If not, with some events, everybody would have to be let in for free and no money would be collected. It's important to remember this philosophy should you ever come into a position of power and have to explain the concept to those errant souls who think that their volunteer efforts should be equivalent to the price of registration. Remember to tell them that if they volunteered for 6 hours at $10 an hour we would have to be paying them to attend and not making any money at all to pay event expenses--which are sometimes substantial. --Ediger ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- On Mon, 13 Jul 2009 10:00:31 -0500 csnew...@gmail.com wrote: I agree with others though - it would have been good to offer discounts or a free pass to the volunteers. [Texascavers] Kerrville weather and drought
According to Kerrville's 10 day weather forecast: The temperature does not hit triple-digits during ICS. Also, some rain is possible on the 22nd. http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/USTX0689?from=36hr_topnav_undeclared If it hits, 99 it will feel like triple digits because the humidity will be over 50 percent, and possibly 70 plus. The early morning temperatures are supposed to get as low as 72, maybe 71. That is a tolerable temperature for sleeping outdoors.I saw another site that said 68 degrees.I couldn't find the record low for this time of year, but I think it is 68. During the heat of the day, as long as you have a cool wet towel around your neck and are sitting in the shade, and wearing loose cotton clothing, and a ice-chest full of cold beverages, then you won't notice the heat, especially if there is a breeze. There should be some clouds, which will help a little to keep the sun off of you. The main thing is that no major storms or flash-flooding is expected. And there are no storms brewing in the gulf. Kerrville does not appear to have a history of major storms in mid-July.There was a big storm in 1932 on July 2nd, but it doesn't seem to be as unpredictable as some parts of the country. Other weather sites with 5 day forecast predict no rain thru Saturday, which is not good news. I did not notice a mosquito problem on the campus. That is good news. [Texascavers] Fwd: getting a ride to ICS for kasia Biernacka from Poland
Forwarded by Mixon: Begin forwarded message: From: Bill Stone bill.st...@stoneaerospace.com List-Post: texascavers@texascavers.com Date: July 14, 2009 3:49:08 PM CDT To: Mixon Bill bmixon...@austin.rr.com Subject: getting a ride to ICS for kasia Biernacka from Poland Bill - Got any ideas on how to handle this: Kasia Biernacka (Marcin Gala's wife from Poland) will be arriving in Austin at 9pm on Saturday and she needs a ride to ICS in time for the 9am Sunday meeting of the executive session (she carries a vote from Poland). We are trying to connect her up with someone. I have offered to pick her up at the airport but Vickie and I will not be leaving until around 4pm on Sunday due to work requirements here. Alternatively, if you know that there is going to be a shuttle service (for example from San Antonio Airport to ICS) that would be useful to know what their schedule would be and where people would have to meet them. Ideas appreciated. Bill Bill Stone, Ph.D., P.E.
