Subject: NSS Conservation Network

From Jim Werker and Val Hildreth-Werker, NSS Conservation Division Co-Chairs
(through the NSS Conservation Network - Steve Smith, Coordinator):

We just received this information from Peter Youngbaer, NSS WNS Liaison, who
requested that it be sent out on the NSS Conservation Network (NSSCN).
Please pass the word out to the folks within your IO.

Thanks!

Jim Val

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Dear NSS Members,

We need your help to contact your U.S. Senators about research funding
for White Nose Syndrome as soon as possible. A sign-on letter
initiated by Sen. Lautenberg, NJ and Sen. Leahy, VT, is being
circulated now, requesting that members join them in asking for $10.8
M in funding for WNS.

ACTION: Please contact your Senator's office and ask them to sign on
to Sen. Lautenberg's and Leahy's WNS letter. If any of the offices
agree to sign on please let me know at wnsliai...@caves.org, so that
we can take them off the list.

Contact information for your Senators is here:
http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

Please call the Washington, D.C. phone number as ask to speak with the
staff person who handles Environmental affairs for the Senator. If
you have a personal contact, use that instead.

Why is this important, and why now? Congress has just returned after
a recess, and all the appropriations requests from members are being
taken at this time. The approach we are supporting is a significant
change from prior efforts, in that funding would be given to a variety
of federal agencies, not just U.S. Fish and Wildlife. This will help
bring a more balanced approach to WNS activities.

As you know, this is an extremely difficult time for any federal
funding. Without research that can help us answer questions about
WNS, we will continue to see management decisions based on hopeful
prevention strategies and speculation.

For details on the collaborative budgetary initiative, please review
this testimony, prepared by a number of organizations, including the
NSS, and delivered by BCI's Executive Director, Nina Fascione:

http://www.caves.org/WNS/BCI%20House%20Int%20Approps%204-15-11%20Final.pdf

To help you speak with confidence and knowledge about the NSS and our
involvement in the WNS effort, please refer to this document:

http://www.caves.org/WNS/The%20NSS%20and%20WNS%20final.pdf

ACTION: Please make your contacts now. We are looking for as many
Senate signers as possible by Tuesday.

ACTION: Please feel free to forward this message to any other lists.

Thank you,

Peter Youngbaer
wnsliai...@caves.org

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

In my never-ending quest to keep the NSSCN E-Mail addressee list as
current as possible, I'd appreciate it greatly if each IO would send me
their druthers on who within the IO they'd like to receive this info.
Usually, this info should go to the IO Conservation Chair, for subsequent
forwarding out to their respective membership. If the IO does not have a
designated Conservation Chair, then this info should go to the overall IO
Chair. Please send me any addressee changes/updates due to IO internal
elections, folks moving out of town, etc.

Thanks!

Steve Smith, NSSCN coordinator

Probably quats (quaternary ammonium compounds). See the Mammoth Cave
WNS management plan:

http://www.nps.gov/maca/parkmgmt/loader.cfm?csModule=security/getfilePageID=330269

Starting on page 38, there's a protocol for General Walking Tours.

Quats are commonly employed in cleaning footwear in order to control
spread of pathogens, and have demonstrated activity on spores of G.
destructans- a bit surprising, as quats are generally not effective on spores.

Any caver who goes caving on Saturday morning, May 21, and can get to
Camp Happy Hollow
by 9 p.m., we will save you some food. You will get in free and a
hot shower will be waiting for
you.I will have some extra cots, and and a roof over your head.

Also, any cavers travelling from West Texas, Lubbock, Wichita Falls,
out-of-state, etc. will get in free.

Anyone with a valid excuse to get in free, just let me know. ( Like
you shot Bin Laden or something,
equivalent, or discovered the cure for WNS, etc. )

There may be a mid-night movie and popcorn to watch in the lodge.

Hopefully there will be a blender and a table with a few beverages.

I doubt we will run out of wine, or soft-drinks.

If anybody wants to bring milk and cereal for breakfast Sunday
morning, that would be appreciated.

We might have a raffle.( definitely not an iPad 2, but something cool )

Most people will leave Saturday night and the rest very early on
Sunday morning. But I plan to be there most
of the day on Sunday, so please let me know if you can come out Sunday
only, and maybe we can
throw something on the grill.

Please add the link below to your Facebook wall, or pass it along:

Best Buy has the Sony a230 camera on clearance for only $ 360.

Looks like a good bargain for a caving camera.

No idea if that is every store or just the one I am at.

The additional flash is $ 130.

I think telephoto lens is $ 250

And another $ 250 for a 16 mm lens

Excerpted from Fifty Years of Texas Caving, p. 358 :

Jim Beall was a student from Galveston and died in Fair Oaks Pit in Kendall
County. He had problems getting up the 60 ft entrance pit and fell to
the bottom and then rolled down a steep slope and fell into the second pit
that was 50 ft deep. He was able to communicate with his companions at the
surface and his initial injuries were believed to be serious but survivable.
Local firemen were summoned and strapped him to a wooden backboard and
began hoisting him up the drops using a manila rope and steel cable from a tow
truck with a powerful winch. Communications were poor. At the top of the
second drop, the backboard hung up, and continued pulling snapped the
manila rope. More force was applied and the cable tore through the attachment
on the backboard, thereby dropping the victim down the 50 ft pit once more.
The cumulative effects from both falls proved fatal.

Jerry.

[Texascavers] Facebook related

2011-05-08 Thread David
Facebook has taken over e-mail for communicating with groups like caving clubs.

It is so easy to create a new group:

 http://www.facebook.com/groups

All the latest smartphones and tablets are Facebook friendly.

It is hard to say where this is all heading. But after playing with Facebook
on a 7 tablet with wireless broadband service ( 4G ), it seems to have a
bright future for several years to come.

Having your caving group communicate this way instead of say Yahoo Groups,
or a list-serve ( like this one ) is much more efficient. There is
more info readily
available, and instant chat is integrated into the service.

There is a bright side to all of this.I will be doing less posting
on CaveTex.

David Locklear

P.S.

My prediction is,

the next big thing in Tablets is the ability to get their broadband in
remote areas.

2011 Rapa Nui Expedition- Arthropod Sampling and Archaeological Feature
Mapping of Easter Island Caves (24 July - 08 August 2011)

We are seeking volunteer cartographers and archaeologists to assist in a
biological and cultural resource inventory project on Easter Island (AKA
Rapa Nui). Our objectives are as follows: (1) Set bait traps and search for
cave-adapted insects in the four deepest caves on the island; (2) Revise
cave habitat maps from 2009 expedition; and, (3) Map cave and archaeological
features in the largest known cave on the island (which incidentally
contains the greatest number of structures and is the most visited cave by
tourists).

Minimum requirements: Excellent physical condition; team-player; willingness
to work long hours underground only to return to an evening of working on
maps and other related expedition tasks; must be a skilled cartographer and/
or highly experienced sketching archaeological features; at minimum American
Red Cross First Aid/ CPR certified.

Volunteers will be responsible for all expenses. Total costs estimated
~5,100.00

Trip Overview:
24 July - Depart U.S.
25 July - Arrive Santiago/ Depart-Arrive Rapa Nui
26 July - Orientation
27 July - Deploy baits in four caves
28-29 July - Revise habitat maps ~10 caves.
30 July - 03 August - Map cave and archaeological features
04-05 August - Check baits/ Collect Arthropods/ Pull Baits
06 August - Process arthropods/ Pack
07 August - Depart Rapa Nui
08 August - Arrive US

Airfare: USA-Santiago, Chile-Rapa Nui ~2,700.00 USD.

Accommodations/ Food: Unfortunately, there are few camping opportunities on
Rapa Nui, and we will have a lot of gear that will need to be secured. We
will either stay in a hotel or rent a house (I'm currently working on both
options). A 13-night hotel stay will be around 1,400.00 USD, but includes 3
meals/ day. Renting a house will be cheaper (stand by for price), but we'd
be responsible for all meals.

Rental Truck/ Gas: Team members will split the cost of a truck for the
duration on the island. ~600.00 USD (estimated)

Global Rescue Travel Insurance (required): Short-term membership. 119.00
USD.

Immunizations (required): Hepatitis A B ~100.00 USD.

Tourism Entry Fee into Chile (required): ~150.00 USD.

Technical Equipment/Skills: There will be no vertical work on this trip.

Explorers Club Flag Expedition:
We will submit an application for this project to become an EC Flag
Expedition (URL: http://www.explorers.org/index.php/expe ... g_the_flag).
Anyone participating in an EC flag expeditions is eligible for consideration
for membership into The Explorers Club. The last two expeditions to Rapa Nui
were flag expeditions.

prepared to send a current CV and contact names, phone numbers and email
addresses of three professional references. Maururu roa nui!

We just received this information from Peter Youngbaer, NSS WNS Liaison, who
requested that it be sent out on the NSS Conservation Network (NSSCN).
Please pass the word out to the folks within your IO.

Thanks!

Thanks!

If interested, please email Jut Wynne at jut.wy...@nau.edu. Please be
prepared to send a current CV and contact names, phone numbers and email
addresses of three professional references. Maururu roa nui!

2011-05-08 Thread Frank Binney
I recall news stories of a ³spelunker², who wasn¹t affiliated with any Texas
caving group, falling while trying to hand over hand a rope in the pit
entrance of a small Hays County cave in the 1970s. Maybe it was the decedent
in question. Poor guy apparently fractured his spine in his fall and the
local volunteer fire department tried to bring him to the surface without a
backboard or other c-spine stabilization. Victim was dead when they got him
out, whether from the original fall or the rescue wasn¹t stated.

Thanks!

Probably quats (quaternary ammonium compounds). See the Mammoth Cave
WNS management plan:

http://www.nps.gov/maca/parkmgmt/loader.cfm?csModule=security/getfilePageID=330269

Starting on page 38, there's a protocol for General Walking Tours.

Quats are commonly employed in cleaning footwear in order to control
spread of pathogens, and have demonstrated activity on spores of G.
destructans- a bit surprising, as quats are generally not effective on spores.

ancient Africans, visited Kruger
 National Game
 Park in South
 Africa , Etosha
 Game Park in
Namibia , the red sand dunes
of the Namib Desert and Fish

of Namibia).  We can expect to see photos of wild animals including Lion,
Leopard, Cheetah,
Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Rhinoceros, Hippopotamus, Giraffe, Ostrich, Hyena,
Zebra,
Kudu, Wildebeest, Warthog, and many other hoofed beasts.

A good time will be had by all in attendance...the Bexar Grotto meets at

If interested, please email Jut Wynne at jut.wy...@nau.edu. Please be
prepared to send a current CV and contact names, phone numbers and email
addresses of three professional references. Maururu roa nui!
