[SWR] Fw: NSS Conservation Network
- Forwarded Message From: Steve Smith stevenlsm...@usa.net To: stevenlsm...@usa.net Sent: Sat, May 7, 2011 9:22:20 AM Subject: NSS Conservation Network From Jim Werker and Val Hildreth-Werker, NSS Conservation Division Co-Chairs (through the NSS Conservation Network - Steve Smith, Coordinator): We just received this information from Peter Youngbaer, NSS WNS Liaison, who requested that it be sent out on the NSS Conservation Network (NSSCN). Please pass the word out to the folks within your IO. Thanks! Jim Val . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dear NSS Members, We need your help to contact your U.S. Senators about research funding for White Nose Syndrome as soon as possible. A sign-on letter initiated by Sen. Lautenberg, NJ and Sen. Leahy, VT, is being circulated now, requesting that members join them in asking for $10.8 M in funding for WNS. ACTION: Please contact your Senator's office and ask them to sign on to Sen. Lautenberg's and Leahy's WNS letter. If any of the offices agree to sign on please let me know at wnsliai...@caves.org, so that we can take them off the list. Contact information for your Senators is here: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm Please call the Washington, D.C. phone number as ask to speak with the staff person who handles Environmental affairs for the Senator. If you have a personal contact, use that instead. Why is this important, and why now? Congress has just returned after a recess, and all the appropriations requests from members are being taken at this time. The approach we are supporting is a significant change from prior efforts, in that funding would be given to a variety of federal agencies, not just U.S. Fish and Wildlife. This will help bring a more balanced approach to WNS activities. As you know, this is an extremely difficult time for any federal funding. Without research that can help us answer questions about WNS, we will continue to see management decisions based on hopeful prevention strategies and speculation. For details on the collaborative budgetary initiative, please review this testimony, prepared by a number of organizations, including the NSS, and delivered by BCI's Executive Director, Nina Fascione: http://www.caves.org/WNS/BCI%20House%20Int%20Approps%204-15-11%20Final.pdf To help you speak with confidence and knowledge about the NSS and our involvement in the WNS effort, please refer to this document: http://www.caves.org/WNS/The%20NSS%20and%20WNS%20final.pdf ACTION: Please make your contacts now. We are looking for as many Senate signers as possible by Tuesday. ACTION: Please feel free to forward this message to any other lists. Thank you, Peter Youngbaer wnsliai...@caves.org . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . In my never-ending quest to keep the NSSCN E-Mail addressee list as current as possible, I'd appreciate it greatly if each IO would send me their druthers on who within the IO they'd like to receive this info. Usually, this info should go to the IO Conservation Chair, for subsequent forwarding out to their respective membership. If the IO does not have a designated Conservation Chair, then this info should go to the overall IO Chair. Please send me any addressee changes/updates due to IO internal elections, folks moving out of town, etc. Thanks! See the Mammoth Cave WNS management plan: http://www.nps.gov/maca/parkmgmt/loader.cfm?csModule=security/getfilePageID=330269 Starting on page 38, there's a protocol for General Walking Tours. Quats are commonly employed in cleaning footwear in order to control spread of pathogens, and have demonstrated activity on spores of G. destructans- a bit surprising, as quats are generally not effective on spores. -AJHicks Chandler, AZ ___ SWR mailing list s...@caver.net http://caver.net/mailman/listinfo/swr_caver.net
[Texascavers] Bexar Grotto program announcement...
At tomorrow's Bexar Grotto meeting, Alan Montemayor will be presenting slides of his recent trip, where he and his wife Cheryl Hamilton spent 49 days in South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, and Namibia. They did a self-drive safari in 4WD Toyota pickup trucks equipped with rooftop tents. Along the way, they visited shelter caves in Lesotho and Namibia that contained rock art from ancient Africans, visited Kruger National Game Park in South Africa , Etosha Game Park in Namibia , the red sand dunes of the Namib Desert and Fish Canyon (the Grand Canyon of Namibia). We can expect to see photos of wild animals including Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Rhinoceros, Hippopotamus, Giraffe, Ostrich, Hyena, Zebra, Kudu, Wildebeest, Warthog, and many other hoofed beasts. A good time will be had by all in attendance...the Bexar Grotto meets at Chester's Hamburgers (NW corner of Hwy 281 and Thousand Oaks Dr) at 7:00 pm on the second and fourth Monday of each month. -Tom

Excerpted from Fifty Years of Texas Caving, p. 358 : Jim Beall was a student from Galveston and died in Fair Oaks Pit in Kendall County. He had problems getting up the 60 ft entrance pit and fell to the bottom and then rolled down a steep slope and fell into the second pit that was 50 ft deep. He was able to communicate with his companions at the surface and his initial injuries were believed to be serious but survivable. Local firemen were summoned and strapped him to a wooden backboard and began hoisting him up the drops using a manila rope and steel cable from a tow truck with a powerful winch. Communications were poor. At the top of the second drop, the backboard hung up, and continued pulling snapped the manila rope. More force was applied and the cable tore through the attachment on the backboard, thereby dropping the victim down the 50 ft pit once more. The cumulative effects from both falls proved fatal. Maybe it was the decedent in question. Poor guy apparently fractured his spine in his fall and the local volunteer fire department tried to bring him to the surface without a backboard or other c-spine stabilization. Victim was dead when they got him out, whether from the original fall or the rescue wasn’t stated. -Frank On 5/8/11 3:38 PM, Butch Fralia _bfralia@maverickgrotto.org_ (mip://02f6b288/bfra...@maverickgrotto.org) wrote: Does this name ring a bell with anyone? Facebook has taken over e-mail for communicating with groups like caving clubs. It is so easy to create a new group: http://www.facebook.com/groups All the latest smartphones and tablets are Facebook friendly. It is hard to say where this is all heading. But after playing with Facebook on a 7 tablet with wireless broadband service ( 4G ), it seems to have a bright future for several years to come. Re: [Texascavers] FW: To the TSS webmaster - Butch Fralia - from the cave related links page.
I recall news stories of a ³spelunker², who wasn¹t affiliated with any Texas caving group, falling while trying to hand over hand a rope in the pit entrance of a small Hays County cave in the 1970s. Maybe it was the decedent in question. Poor guy apparently fractured his spine in his fall and the local volunteer fire department tried to bring him to the surface without a backboard or other c-spine stabilization. Victim was dead when they got him out, whether from the original fall or the rescue wasn¹t stated. -Frank On 5/8/11 3:38 PM, Butch Fralia bfra...@maverickgrotto.org wrote: Does this name ring a bell with anyone?
Thanks! Re: [Texascavers] FW: To the TSS webmaster - Butch Fralia - from the cave rel...

[Texascavers] Facebook related
Having your caving group communicate this way instead of say Yahoo Groups, or a list-serve ( like this one ) is much more efficient. There is more info readily available, and instant chat is integrated into the service. There is a bright side to all of this.I will be doing less posting on CaveTex. David Locklear P.S. My prediction is, the next big thing in Tablets is the ability to get their broadband in remote areas. - Visit our website: http://texascavers.com To unsubscribe, e-mail: texascavers-unsubscr...@texascavers.com For additional commands, e-mail: texascavers-h...@texascavers.com

RE: [Texascavers] FW: To the TSS webmaster - Butch Fralia - from the cave related links page.
Jim Beall was a Bexar Grotto member in the late 80's and I think the early 90s. As I recall, he moved out of state but I don't recall where. Linda Palit may know more.
