[Allcavers] Bats in North Dallas: NBC News Local Affiliate

2012-09-12 Thread R D Milhollin
Short story that made the nbcnews.com feed tonight, written by local reporter
Kevin Cokely. I find it hard to believe this is the first reference in the
mainstream media to the positive effects of urban bat populations from the
center of the West Nile Virus (North American) Universe. This should be a
wakeup call for more bat houses and bat-friendly infrastructure.

[Texascavers] Re: [SWR] [Texascavers] Fw: [PBSS] September Meeting Notes

2012-09-12 Thread Jacqueline Thomas
After reading these emails I found "Ess Cave" with coordinates on Google. I
requested directions, and was redirected to maps. I received directions, then
followed the link to report inappropriate content. Ess Cave is now listed
without coordinates and shows as having been changed four hours ago. I put in a
second request for directions and this time I received the "need more
information about destination" message.

I don't know if that was the only place a location was listed but the person I
found attached to the cave and the coordinates had responded quickly. This
might not be the listing Bill was referring to but it was the only one I could
find that had a location.

Lots of pictures, though…

[SWR] Sinkhole Conference deadline extension for students only!

2012-09-12 Thread George Veni
Dear Friends

Just a few minutes ago the Sinkhole Conference Organizing Committee decided
to extend the deadline, for abstracts for students only and for student
applications for the Barry F. Beck Sinkhole Conference Student Scholarship,
to the end of September. We have received many excellent abstracts for the
Sinkhole Conference in general, but with lower registration prices plus this
new scholarship, we are trying to encourage as many students as possible to
attend. The Sinkhole Conference is a great way for students considering a
career in cave and karst science to meet potential colleagues and employers,
as well as to learn a great amount of cutting-edge information on karst
environmental management.

For more information on the Beck Scholarship, to register for the
conference, and for students to send abstracts and applications, go to
http://www.nckri.org/sinkholeconference2013. Again, the deadline has been
extended only for students through 30 September 2012. If you do not see
these changes on the website, it is because we just made the decision; the
website will be updated soon.

An article in the San Antonio paper says they closed the gates at Medina dam:

http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local_news/article/Medina-Lake-dam-gates-shut-in-effort-to-keep-some-3854566.php

Check out the pictures and you'll see a large sinkhole that is normally
underwater. There is also a very nice shot of Paradise Canyon.

I just talked to the owner of Paradise Canyon and he said the leaks around the
dams, and the springs along the banks of Paradise Canyon are still flowing very
well. The river is clean and clear as always. See you all at TCR this year.

Thanks for the update on Paradise Canyon, Kurt.

FWIW, I think that PC is the best TCR location that I have ever visited
and would like to see it remain there for several years.

I haven't been to all 30+ TCR's but, PC is much better than Flat Creek
Ranch, Honeycreek, and the ATV Park we had it at.

It's a long drive from Dallas, but, heck, they're all a long way from
Dallas!

Just my 1/50th of a dollar. Please send a SASE if you'd like a refund!

Hi all,

This is Rafal Kedzierski, one of DFW cavers. Recently, I joined Friends of the
Colorado Bend State Park,
volunteer group dedicated to helping the park. At the request of the
park, we are looking to organize several group cave tours for visitors on
Saturday, October 27th,
through several of more tour friendly caves, like Circurina, Sweet, Lemons
Ranch Caves. I'm looking for few good cavers to help with the effort. Knowledge
of park is helpful but not necessary - I anticipate having at least 2 guides on
every tour - just interest and caving experience.

Stay at the conference center or caver's camp for the weekend included. I
anticipate some extracurricular caving activity afterwards as well.

Email me back if interested.

Guys,

Thanks for the advice, I ended up getting a Canon T3i and I'm real happy with
it. Used it for a road trip from Oregon, down the California Coast, through
S.F., to Yosemite, Mono Lake, Bishop, Death Valley, to Vegas and on to
Flagstaff were we left Aspen.

Got it from B&H Photo and they delivered it in time for the trip. Just bought
the camera body as I already had the lens.

Thanks for all the advice.

The issue I saw is that someone made a custom google map with the cave
location and left it public. I use the custom maps for work or caving
trips all the time. The key is to make them private. You can still share
the maps but your locations and what not will not show up for the public to
see. The quickest resolution might be to find the map owner (Bill is on
it) and get them to make the map private.

2012-09-12 Thread Bill Bentley
Anyone know how to get Google to get this link off the Web?

See highlighted in red
My attempt to contact Google have gone no where.

This is what I wrote to Google in the report a problem section:
"Cave Locations should never be made public. This cave has now been damaged and
vandalized as a result of this thoughtless action by someone and Google has
allowed that to happen. Please remove this link at your earliest convenience."
Sincerely,

Bill Bentley

The September Meeting of the PBSS began at 7:00pm with Bill Bentley, Tony
Abernathy and Matthew Ormsby in attendance. We were later joined by Kerry
Lowery, Patrick Ray and two of his friends Erik Ulrestad and Laura Liem.

A financial Report was not given because Walter was not in attendance but last
months report was 800.79 and there have been no expenses since then.

Bill gave a report about the upcoming Amazing Maze trip for the Permian Basin
Outdoor Club led by the PBSS. Emphasis was added regarding TCMA membership
requirements. The PBOC meets next Tuesday and the trip will be on September 22.
Any interested PBSS member are invited and encouraged to attend, please make
sure your TCMA membership is up to date. If you need directions please e-mail
me.

I gave a brief report about a trip to Ess Cave this past Saturday. Bill
recommended I mention in this remailer that the gate has been compromised and
needs to be repaired. Barry and Mike have been recommended for the job.
Currently, the cave can be accessed by anyone who knows its location. Thanks to
Google anyone that searches Ess Cave can find it. Bill is going to send Google
a request that the location be removed from its map but doubts anything will
come of it.

The TCMA reunion will be on October 20-21 at Paradise Canyon. I am tentatively
looking at getting permits to park caves on October 27th. I also hope to get
permits to the TCMA preserve in November after Thanksgiving.

The meeting was officially closed at 7:25 because of a commitment I had in
Odessa at 8:00 but most everyone else stayed and ate and probably talked about
caves.

RE: [Texascavers] camera questions

2012-09-12 Thread Geary Schindel
