[Texascavers] RE: New NSS Fellows

2013-08-11 Thread Geary Schindel
FYI, the awards ceremony went off without a hitch, the roof stayed on the hall
and there was no severe weather like last year. The banquet room was almost
full, the food was good, and the entire banquet was very well organized, from
food service and seating to award presentations. There were nice pictures
projected of all the award winners.

[Texascavers] Mallory report, 8/10/13

2013-08-11 Thread Emily McGowan
From her father, Steve:

Today was a good day. When Caleb and I got to the hospital, Mallory was like
a totally different person. She was happy to see us, and talked to us. An
actual, real conversation. She inquired several times about the condition of
Rex, who had been involved in the accident. We finally agreed to call him
and let her talk to him. Not sure how well he could hear her, but she
responded to him several times. She was very relieved to find out he was OK.
She was totally coherent this morning, and asked a lot of questions. She was
relieved to find out that she was not crazy, as she put it. Apparently,
she thought that she had lost her mind. We told her she would recover
completely, but when I left the room for a little while, she told Caleb she
needed to heal, and that she knew that I was not telling the truth when I
said she'd fully recover in a few months.

It was a pleasure being around her most of the day. Then, late in the
afternoon, she became highly agitated and very upset. We wheeled her up and
down the hall to try to calm her down, but she wasn't having any of it. She
kept asking for help, and asking Why? over and over. At one point, when
she kept saying help, Caleb said to her, I'm helping as much as I can.
She turned to him and said, I know, Caleb, but you're not helping much. A
few minutes later, she was asking Why? over and over, and after a few
minutes of Why, Why, Why, I told her, So that when it's over, we can
appreciate how good things are. She looked me in the eye and said, Well,
that sucks. It was hard not to laugh.

She calmed down after that, and when we left she was in her bed and doing
well. She has improved tremendously just in the last 24 hours. If she keeps
things up at this rate, and someone wants to call it a miracle, I won't
argue the point. When we first arrived, we'd have to lean in to her to hear
what she was saying. By afternoon, her voice was strong enough for both of
us to hear her from normal distance. We were also told that during her OT
session, she walked while pushing (and holding on to) a shopping cart.
Yesterday, she could only walk with a therapist under each arm (she moved
her legs, but they did the actual walking).

Yes, today was a good day.
Steve

Vickie took a break today and stayed home and handled paperwork. She came in
late this afternoon and can verify that we're not making this up.

FYI, the awards ceremony went off without a hitch, the roof stayed on the hall
and there was no severe weather like last year. The banquet room was almost
full, the food was good, and the entire banquet was very well organized, from
food service and seating to award presentations. There were nice pictures

While it wasn't exactly devastating, there was a pretty
severe thunderstorm on Wednesday night during the Campground
Party/Terminal Syphons performance. It rained several inches and one
edge of the campground flooded. A few tents were partially submerged
and some people had wet sleeping bags. The creek running along one
edge of the campground came within 6 inches of overtopping its banks,
but didn't quite go over. If it had, many more people would have gotten wet.

While I send my condolences to those who got hosed, I am relieved to know that
the traditional NSS thunderstorm made its usual untimely appearance. Some of
you scientists out there need to determine why, no matter where it's held, this
event attracts such severe weather.

Thanks for the update, Mark. Now I know all in well in the world order.

 This is such wonderful news!!!

What a fantastic day! When asked during OT what her name was she answered:
Mallory Mayeux. Where was she from: Longbridge, Louisiana (It's really where
we live-suburb of Cottonport). Who was I- Miss Vickie-This is what my little
Pre-K students call me and she calls me that sometimes especially when she
is picking on me. Later in the day, the speech therapist asked her brother's
name. She answered Caleb Mayeux. And it was so neat when her grandma called
me. I had my mom talk to her on the phone. Well, mom said Hey Mallory, and
Mal answered back Hey grandma. I was floored by all of this and so excited
I cried. She is mouthing all of this and it comes out as a faint whisper at
best because she has the trachea tube in and air is not passing over her
vocal cords. They have what is called a voice little round thing on the
end of her tube that she wears during the day to help her make sound but she
isn't forceful enough. But it is clear to everyone what she is saying. She is
 enunciating very clearly.

Also, during OT Steve told them how she had been on American Idol and sang
I'm so excited. So the OT who is exactly Mal's age found it on her I-phone
and her and Mal sang it and Mal even danced (moving her shoulders) while
sitting on the exercise bench. We were so shocked. It was Mal's personality
coming out. Everybody loved it. She was so funny because she kept reaching
for the OT's I-phone, was able to turn it on. But the OT would say you have
to sit for however long, then I will give it to you. We have Mal's I-phone
there but she didn't want to listen to her music when I asked-too tired. It
is password protected, so we will have to wait until she can open it. She
also turned on a blinking wand, is helping to push up for sitting and
 standing, responding to commands.

Absolutely incredible! Please say those thanksgiving prayers. The doctors
 say she is moving fast.

The only sad thing is that now that she is aware (not constantly though) she
 cried four different times today.
Once, when her dad had to leave. He woke up this morning at 2:30 a.m. to go
to court about the guy who hit her. We are definitely going to be the
squeaking wheel. The prosecutor has 600 cases, but most are not nearly as
serious as Mal's. But she calmed down when I told her dad would be back the
next day. Later, she was being put on the tilt table where they need to test
her blood pressure as she stands. It takes a long time and they have to
check all along the way. When she got to the top, she started crying, her
muscles are hurting, and she is strapped in, too. So I just hugged her and
she wrapped her arms around me and hugged me, too. It felt so good to be
able to hug her after not being able to touch her for so long. She calms
down after loving and reassuring her. We are still in awe of the
accomplishments of today. Thanks for your prayers and good wishes.

While I send my condolences to those who got hosed, I am relieved to know that
the traditional NSS thunderstorm made its usual untimely appearance. Some of

Five years in row of those would make him a happy man ;)

FYI, the awards ceremony went off without a hitch, the roof stayed
on the hall and there was no severe weather like last year. The
banquet room was almost full, the food was good, and the entire
banquet was very well organized, from food service and seating to
award presentations. There were nice pictures projected of all the
award winners.

Congratulations to Bill Stephens and Marvin Miller, new Fellows of
the National Speleological Society. My apologies if I've missed any
other Texans.

While it wasn't exactly devastating, there was a pretty
severe thunderstorm on Wednesday night during the Campground
Party/Terminal Syphons performance. It rained several inches and one
edge of the campground flooded. A few tents were partially submerged
and some people had wet sleeping bags. The creek running along one
edge of the campground came within 6 inches of overtopping its banks,
but didn't quite go over. If it had, many more people would have gotten
 wet.

Anyway, glad it went off without a hitch or hiccup. Sounds like a
 missed a good one!

[Texascavers] New Fellows

2013-08-11 Thread David
Is this the Bill Stephens that was instrumental in helping with the
cable-ladder contest at TCR back in the mid to late 80's ? I think that
guy also won lots of cable-ladder contest, and taught lots of kids and
newbie cavers how to properly climb a cable-ladder.
