at 50 seconds, the cameraman has to get out of the way, and so for about
30 seconds the clip is not watchable, but then the caver being filmed appears
to bypass the awkward restriction.

I have been in several wet squeezes. Klar's Ranch Salamander Cave ( # 1 or
# 2 ?? )
Eriks River Cave in Indiana, and Lamplighter's Cave in Indiana.

I have been stuck momentarily in some dry squeezes
The One-Legged-Man Passage in Airman's ( long legs ), and The Corkscrew in
Midnight Cave in Carta Valley ( only because I was fat )

I think any other tight spots that I encountered ( in the late 80's ) where
only because I was 6 feet tall
and had broad shoulders and was over-weight.

I have a question for you.

Imagine yourself as self-employed and all alone operating
some sort of business - as your only source of income ( no other money coming
in ).
How much money, would you realistically expect to profit per day after
subtracting expenses and taxes ?
I don't see how anybody can do it. I worked my tail off today, and while I
may eventually
someday get paid $ 100 for that work, I had $ 50 in gas expenses, and overhead
related
to an office, fax machine, internet, cell-phone, car repairs, taxes.
( One can write off just about everything though, so when it
is all said and done, there is not enough taxable income to even pay for social
security )
But you got to figure in the dead-days, or in my case dead-weeks. I do pay
my
fair share of taxes, as I eat out 14 meals per week, and stay in motels, and
buy lots and lots
of gas.For the past 21 years, about 10 % of my income probably went to
sales taxes.

My trip was uneventful.

I drove about 1,500 miles all by myself. Under slightly different
circumstances I could have just as well gone to Bustamante and taken some
riders, but that was just not meant to be.

I have nothing to show worthwhile of my effort, except a few photos ( mostly

Yes-we all have! You make everything harder than it needs to be & you can't
afford it anyway so why do you try so hard? There are sooo many other, safer,
and closer road trips you could do. Come to Dripping Springs & spend TG with
Fritz, June, me & others-you're welcome. No drama, easy peasy! Take the logical

The Short Story

Experienced Mammoth Cave folks may have heard of Melissa. She was in love with
her tutor, but he failed to reciprocate her affections. For her revenge, she
abandoned him in Mammoth Cave in 1843 without a lamp. He was never heard of
again. Visitors and cave guides tell of hearing her voice as she roams the
passages calling for her lost love.

In some telling of the tale (and it WAS Mammoth Cave, after all) she contracted
consumption. Her mysterious voice (as heard in the cave) has her doleful
refrain interrupted by fitful coughing.

Hey, that was a long time ago, Roger. The UFO sightings were more recent
(2003). They looked just like some of the UFO sighting I've heard callers
describe on late night radio, there were more than one of them, they turned out
to be real, and there's even reason to think they could have been cave related!
You don't think I'd hoax you about something like that now, do you?

What happened to your Miata? I might be curious, but not curious enough to join
Facebook.

Not a hoax, Rod? Not so sure, having been successfully hoaxed by Rod upon at
least a couple of occasions in the distant past.

BTW, any word of my demise is premature. Not so, unfortunately for my Miata, as
Rod would know if only he was on Facebook.

2011-06-22 Thread Jenny Holt

Ok Rod...now I wish for more info on on your "truthful" cave related UFO
sighting. And I love tales of Chupacabra, Andy. I was on FB tonight Roger and
I didn't see anything about your demise or the Miata's; do tell. Oh and Chris,
maybe we will take this OT for your sake. It's my bedtime, I hope to read
enlightening stories tomorrow. :)

The coolest songs and sounds for me was “The Best of

recorded in this mode.

Hi David,
I've only met you at TCR this past year, (tuna fish sandwich), but I've been
reading your posts (not the LED ones) for the past few years and think you are
a very interesting person. I love that you take such an interest in the caving
community and yet claim to be an armchair caver. I also admire that you took
such an interest in Harry Walker. Until this last post of yours, I hadn't
realized that you had known him from the past. I thought your IKE help was from
knowing his previous caver status, not that you'd met and spent time with him
in the past. Kudos to you! I'm sad to hear of his passing, but glad that you
were there at the end to help with his hurricane dilema. You know he felt
comfort and relief from your presence in that horrible time. Good luck in your
job hunt and don't forget that you will be blessed for your kind
deeds...eventually. (Life is tough, and then you die) A saying I remember from
the 80's but not sure of actuallity!
Cheers,
Jenny Holt

Hi Chris,
I was very happy to meet you and take ownership of one of your shirts. Thanks

don't live in Austin proper so we can not kick our recyclables to the curb...it
costs us $70 dollars quarterly, but we do it anyway...lots of cans and glass-ha!

The recycling containers at TCR captured a total of 14 pounds of plastic
bottles and 26 pounds of aluminum - one pretty good pickup load. The material
was donated to Green Guy Recycling of San Marcos and the cavers were given the
credit for the donation. factoid: Making aluminum from recycled material
requires only 5% of the amount of energy required to make it from ore.

recycling at TCR

What about the glass items...were
they also recycled? I realize most people don't bring glass to outdoor
recreation areas to help keep broken glass out of the water and off of the
riverbanks, but some people forget. I saw boxes of glass bottles and was
hoping they were also donated.

Thanks again Sam for you efforts!

Jenny

recycling at TCR

The recycling containers at TCR captured a total of 14
pounds of plastic bottles and 26 pounds of aluminum - one pretty good pickup
load. The material was donated to Green Guy Recycling of San Marcos and the
cavers
were given the credit for the donation.

factoid: Making aluminum from recycled material requires
only 5% of the amount of energy required to make it from ore.

That video is unbelievable! I can't imagine having the guts to leap into that
huge hole. Most importantly, how do you get out?

RE: [ot_caving] Vinyl

2008-01-26 Thread Jenny Holt

My father was in town recently and brought me his old Panasonic turntable and a
bag of about 15 vintage albums. You wouldn't believe how heavy the 80's ( ?)
turntable is. I've yet to set it up but think I'll get to that tomorrow. I'm
looking forward to listening to the original old Beatles albums he was nice
enough to pass down to me. Vinyl DOES live!

As some of you know - I recently moved from perky pretty Republican-land Frisco
Tx back to Austin.
Nearly 200 lbs of that move consisted of flat, circular pieces of vinyl in
between sheets of cardboard.
So for over two weeks now, I've been unpacking - and one of those unpacked
things were my old album collection.

My new place has a perfect built-in cabinet/bookcase - as it would seem -
perfect for a stereo and turntable.
So I unwrapped my Denmark mfr Bang & Olfsen turntable from plastic and bubble
wrap - hooked it all up and played some of those albums that had not been
played since before I LEFT Austin over 6 years ago.

I can hardly say how impressed I was!
I'm sure that my auditory acuity has diminished some - but I had forgotten that
vinyl really does NOT sound so very inferior to digital!
On top of that - sitting in boxes for all these years has done nothing to
diminish these records.

It brings me back to the perennial conversation about how long storage media
last.
Some of these records are over 30 years old and still sound fine.
[I had not heard B.O.C.s 'Tyranny and Mutation' in ages - I listened to the
whole album from start to finish - WOW]

So - from a caver who sounds like he lives in a cave.
Vinyl still lives -
