[Texascavers] Robber Baron Cave still calling to explorers

Robber Baron Cave still calling to explorers

Colin McDonald- Express-News
In 1941, Charley Rodger and his brother Rodney Rodger took a
clothesline, a couple of candles and some matches into Robber Baron
Cave off Nacogdoches Road.

“We crawled on our bellies,” he said. “Then we turned to the left 6
or 7 feet to a room where we could stand up.”

Rodger was 13 and his brother was 10. The two went as far as they
dared with one end of the clothesline tied to a rock at the entrance.
It was an adventure partially inspired by their mother, who told
stories of going into the cave during Prohibition for a drink.

“Maybe Mother and Dad found a baby sitter and went out for the
night,” he said.

Like the Rodger brothers did then, more than 200 visitors crawled
through the cave entrance to find out for themselves where the
passages of Bexar County's longest cave led.

After five years of work by some 275 volunteers and $30,000 in
grants, the nonprofit Texas Cave Management Association hosted an
open house Saturday to celebrate the completion of their efforts at
the cave.

The cave will now be open by appointment only. But given the
popularity of the event, organizers are thinking of making the fall
open house an annual affair. The line for the cave stretched out onto
the street for most of the afternoon.

The volunteers spent their weekends hauling out tons of garbage and
construction debris from the sinkhole at the cave entrance, pulled
invasive species and landscaped the lot surrounding the cave so it
could be used as a community park. Several Boy Scouts did work on the
fence and garden beds to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. One volunteer
made a bridge to span part of the sinkhole and offer a clear view of
a tunnel leading into the Austin Chalk limestone. The hope is that
the surrounding neighborhood will now take ownership of the parklike
setting and help care for the cave and not see it as a garbage pit.

As they stood in line, the visitors had no problem with that, but all
had the same question: Where do the tunnels lead?

“The tale was it went to San Pedro Park,” said Jim Pettinos, 81, of
the narrow opening in the white rock. “And that it went all the way
to the Alamo, but even we didn't believe it.”

Pettinos was one of a half-dozen locals who gathered at the edge of
the sinkhole to share their stories of exploring the cave when
candles were still the most reliable source of light.

The story of a natural tunnel leading all the way to the Alamo is
most likely geologically impossible, given that the historic site
downtown is on a different limestone formation; but given the porous
nature of the Austin Chalk and other caves in the region, more
tunnels are likely, said Gary Poole, who was one of the first team of
cavers to study Robber Baron.

Poole spent the winter of 1976 and 1977 mapping the cave. About that
time, another large cave was found nearby during a construction
project, he said. Some cavers went in, never found the end of the
tunnels and came out. Then the property owner closed up the entrance.

Poole describes Robber Baron Cave as a “jungle gym” underground. With
all the construction that has occurred in the area, he said, many of
the passages that people such as Rodger explored have now either been
filled with sediment or collapsed.

But the cave most likely does connect somehow to other networks of
passages under San Antonio.

“I'm sure of it,” he said.

This summer, 70 feet of such a passage was discovered. And teams are
preparing to do more study and are gathering as many stories as they
can to figure out where to look next for more passages.

The attraction of the cave, Poole said, is that everyone who goes
into it feels like they are going into uncharted territory. More than
30 years after he crawled through garbage to explore the cave, Poole
brought his twin 13-year-old daughters, Ariana and Gabi, to explore
the cave.

“You feel like you are actually exploring,” he said. “It's pleasant.”

“It's more than pleasant,” Ariana said, her knees stained with the
mud of the cave and huge smile on her face.

Before she could finish Gabi broke in.

“It's awesome.”

[Texascavers] Robber Baron Workday - Sat. Oct 25

2008-10-08 Thread Joe Mitchell

Final Robber Baron Restoration Project Work Day!

Thanks to the hard work of 250 people who have put in more than 3500
hours of work over five years, the Robber Baron project is nearly
complete. There is only one more regular work day planned for
Saturday, Oct 25. Thanks to the 53 volunteers who showed up last time
(and special thanks to Cheryl Hamilton for coordinating the
planting), we should have no problem finishing up a few remaining
tasks. We will be doing a final cleanup of the surface in
preparation for the Nov. 8th Open House (information to follow in a
separate email) and also some tree trimming and removal.
Additionally, we will do some prep work for the upcoming installation
of the information kiosk.

As usual, water and lunch will be provided and the cave will be open
for visitation afterwards for those helping out. If you are coming
from out of town, let us know if you need a place to stay.

When: Sat., Oct 25, 8:30am

What to bring:

Shovels
Weedwackers
Chainsaws
Loppers
Rakes
Wheelbarrows
Gloves

Also if anyone is willing to help haul brush to the Bitters Rd. brush
site and can bring a pickup or trailer, that would be appreciated.

Although the restoration project will be officially finished, we do
plan to have work days at Robber Baron once or twice a year in the
future so we can keep the place looking nice. Also there are a few
non-native trees still slated for cutting around the sinkhole so we
may have a special day for working on that later in the winter.

From TCMA and myself we give a big thank you to everyone who helped
us in planning, supporting and carrying out this project. It has been
a long effort, but has resulted is something for everyone to be proud
of.

Formal Open House Announcement Below:

Robber Baron Cave Preserve Open House

The Texas Cave Management Association (TCMA) is pleased to announce
an open house at Robber Baron Cave Preserve in San Antonio. Since
2003, TCMA has undertaken a major project to restore and improve the
property around the cave entrance. To mark the conclusion of this
project, a formal dedication and open house will be held at the cave
on Saturday, November 8, 2008 from 9:00 am-3:00 pm. You are invited
to come meet us for this event.

During the Open House you are welcome to take an underground tour
through the cave, learn more about TCMA and Robber Baron, and have a
chance to meet the people who explore and maintain it. People in the
neighborhood and volunteers are especially invited to attend. Caving
gear will be provided.

The Robber Baron restoration project involved many components:
removal of trash and debris from the sinkhole, constructing a new,
more ecologically friendly entrance, improving the surface by
replacing exotic plants with native plants, and physical improvements
including fencing, trails, and an informational kiosk. The project
has involved over 3500 hours of work from more than 250 volunteers,
especially from the local Bexar Grotto caving group. Work was
completed at a cost of more than $33,000, much of it in the form of
individual donations and grants from organizations such as the US
Fish and Wildlife Service, the Magnolia Charitable Trust, and the
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. These contributors have helped
make Robber Baron a centerpiece for TCMA due to its unique
geological, biological, and historical assets.

Founded in 1986, the Texas Cave Management Association is a nonprofit
organization that works with members and partners to acquire and
manage caves and karst. Through diversified funding, we actively work
to conserve caves, promote research and education, and provide
responsible recreational access to our caves. More information about
TCMA can be found at www.tcmacaves.org. The Bexar Grotto is the San
Antonio area chapter of the National Speleological Society. More can

Re: [Texascavers] RE: UV Cave Biology Indicator lighting

2008-07-20 Thread Joe Mitchell
The biggest selection of UV LEDs (and other oddball wavelength LEDs)
that I know of is a company in Austria:

http://www.roithner-laser.com/LED_diverse.htm

They have standard LEDs down to 350nm, but other specialized (meaning
VERY expensive) ones down to 255nm. Their price list is a little hard
to find, but is here:
http://www.roithner-laser.at/All_Datasheets/Pricelists/pricelist-
c-080701.pdf

I have ordered many things from them before, and though it sometimes
takes a while to get stuff, they are a reputable opto-electronics
company.

does clear polycarbonate or 'Plexiglas' block UV light as glass does?

I don't know for a fact, but I can say with pretty high
certainty, yes. Almost any organic material is going to block
short wave UV. If there were something cheaper than quartz to use
on those lights, they would.

[Texascavers] Robber Baron Work Day - Sat. Mar 22

2008-03-12 Thread Joe Mitchell
TCMA would like to announce that the next Robber Baron work day will
be Saturday, March 22 starting at 9:00am.

The amount of work accomplished so far has been amazing and could
only have been done with all the great volunteers we have had! In
2007, we finished several major projects including the steps into the
sinkhole, a retaining wall in the sinkhole, re-grading the property
to improve drainage and put down fresh dirt, completion of a fence
around the sinkhole, building a trail across the property, and
construction of a parking lot (the last three of which were Eagle
Scout projects).

Now we are in the home stretch and hope to tackle some of these
remaining projects in the next several work days:

1. Completion of a fence next to the neighbors property and
installation of a new gate along the alley

2. Planting new native vegetation
3. Construction of a composting area
4. Various misc. tasks such as placing stones around the entrance
gate and adding gravel to the lower steps.

5. Installation of signs and a kiosk

Projects #1 and #2 are tentatively planned for this work day with #1
being organized as an Eagle Scout project. More information will
follow when we get things setup.

Lunch will be provided and the cave will be open for visitation
afterwards for those helping out.

Some items that people can bring:
- Digging tools including shovels, hoes and rakes.
- Small digging tools such as trowels for planting
- Containers of water
- Wheelbarrows
- Gloves

If you need a place to stay, let us know and we can hook you up.

Again, thanks to everyone who has helped out so far and we hope to
see you there!

[Texascavers] ICS Sponsorship

2008-02-04 Thread Joe Mitchell

Hello Everyone,

My name is Evelynn Mitchell and I am the new president of the Bexar
Grotto in San Antonio, Texas. At our last Grotto meeting, the Bexar
Grotto voted to sponsor the upcoming ICS at the $1000 level. We will
soon have our Grotto logo posted on the ICS website in the sponsor
section to show our support of the Congress. I am told that we are
the first Grotto to make this show of support.

At this time I'd like make a formal challenge to the remaining
grottos of the United States to support the ICS in a similar manner.
If your grotto would like to have their logo on the ICS sponsor page
along with the Bexar Grotto, then you must declare your support by
the end of the month. Of course, donations of any and all size will
be accepted.

We have an opportunity to show the world how amazing US cavers can
be, so let's do it!

I look forward to seeing y'all in Kerrville in 2009. :-)

Sincerely,

Evelynn Mitchell
President, Bexar Grotto

As you all may know, spring convention has been set for April 5 6

sales. For this reason, I need all vendors to contact me prior to the
event so that we can discuss the set up this year. (Rob Bissett has

Its fall and will hopefully be cooling off soon which means its time
to start up the monthly Robber Baron work days again! A great deal
has been accomplished by many, many volunteers over the last few
years and now I think the end of the project can be glimpsed off in
the distance ... but there is still a ways to go. A big thanks to
everyone who has helped out so far!

The agenda for this work day has not yet been set, but may involve
mowing the grounds, staining the fence posts of the new fence around
the sinkhole, dirt hauling to grade the surface of the property, gate
and fence work, and/or rock work at the bottom of the sinkhole around
the entrance. More details about items needed will be forthcoming.

Re: [Texascavers] Caves in Alaska

2007-07-05 Thread Joe Mitchell

Don,

Joe and I were in Alaska last summer, and did not see anything for
the Denali area, but were able to get into some crevases at
Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. At this park you can hire a guide
to go glacier hiking and ice climbing. There are two outfitters who
do these trips. www.steliasguides.com/alaska_day_trips.htm

www.kennicottguides.com/ (We used them)
On our trip we were able to repel into some pits and climb out, and
we also walked into a carved out ice cave feature.

It is a little more challenging to get into Wrangell -St. Elias since
you have to rent a vehicle that is allowed to drive on gravel roads,
or find a shuttle, but the park is still largely undeveloped and was
one of our favorite stops on our trip. You can also fly into the
area, or even schedule a flight seeing trip as we did. There are a
lot of options for activities.

Have a great trip. We really enjoyed exploring Alaska and I hope you do too.

Evelynn Mitchell

I'm kindof 'fraid of venturing into crevases or ice caves - but
anyone aware of any caves on the slopes of McKinley or Denali
National park???

I'm heading up there at the end of the month.

[Texascavers] RE: Driving in Alaska

2007-07-05 Thread Joe Mitchell

Mike,

You are correct about the condition of the Alaska roads and the
rental policy. In fact, when there are wash outs, the road department
fills them in with gravel, so it is often hard to avoid. When we took
our trip last summer, we planned to drive up the Dalton Highway, 400
miles of a gravel road with few towns along it, and so rented a
vehicle from an outfit that equipped the vehicle with extra full size
spare tires, a tool kit and a CB radio. We ended up using one of the
spares on this road. We also clogged up one of the sensors with mud,
causing the check engine light to come on.

We still had this vehicle when we drove to Wrangell-St. Elias. The
biggest danger on this road is actually old railroad spikes sticking
out of the roadbed since the road was built over the old rail line.
Although we didn't have any problems here, a full size spare is
definitely a good idea.

So, the moral of the story is, if you go caving in Alaska, take some
one else's car. :-)

That's a funny thing about renting vehicles in AK. When I was
up there back in the '90s with Nancy Weaver, we rented a car and had
to sign a statement saying we would not take it on gravel roads.
Well, if you have ever driven much in Alaska, you know that that is
next to impossible if you leave the city. There are precious few
paved roads in AK to begin with, and those that they do have are
frequently under repair during the few summer months that it is
feasible to do road work. So even the paved roads have long gravel
sections or places where you get shunted off onto smaller gravel
roads. We drove all over the place and took as many gravel roads as
paved ones, even getting stuck once. The car we had was a compact
like a Chevy Nova, but we discovered that the back seat could be
laid down and the partition between trunk and seat removed so that
it was, remarkably, long enough for us to sleep in the car. Since
it rained a lot on our trip, we camped in the car often (always off
of gravel roads). We didn't tell and the rental agency never
complained, although I think we did wash the car before returning
it. :-)

[Texascavers] Robber Baron - Sat, Jun 23

2007-06-07 Thread Joe Mitchell
Its time again soon for the next Robber Baron work day! It will be
Saturday, June 23rd.

This workday will be a little different since it will be in support
of Matthew Haas who is performing his Eagle Scout project by
constructing a nice fence around the sinkhole! We need lots of people
for this since most of the work is planned to be completed that day.

Additionally, if there are enough people, we have dirt to distribute
to fill in low areas, gravel to fill in steps with, and grass to mow.

Since there is lots to do and its getting hotter, we will be getting
an earlier start at 8:00am. Lunch and beverages will be provided.

Here are items that we need for people to bring:

Wheelbarrows
Shovels
Rakes
Hoes
Water for cement mixing
Weed-eaters
General tools for fence assembly

As always. the cave will be open for anyone wanting to go in
afterwards. If you need a place to stay, let us know and we can hook
you up.

Thanks to everyone who has helped out so far and we hope to see you there!

[Texascavers] Robber Baron, Sat, May 5

2007-05-02 Thread Joe Mitchell
We are going ahead with the previously scheduled Robber Baron work
day this Saturday, May 5, starting around 9:00am. A number of people
have already volunteered and due to recent heavy rains, we have a
major issue with water flow that needs to be dealt with soon. We will
be building berms around the trench and sinkhole where they do not
already exist to divert water away. We also have a lot of trash that
was dumped into the sinkhole by someone which needs to be removed.
There is also a previously scheduled cave trip for the San Antonio
Wildfest event that needs to be lead, so there will be plenty to do.

Mainly, we need the following items for people to bring:
Shovels
Pickaxes
Wheelbarrows

Water and lunch will be provided.

Due to the Wildfest trip, we will be out there until at least 4pm, so
feel free to stop by and help out for any part of the day!

The cave will be available for visitation by anyone who helps out.

Thanks!
