It’ll form like a habit and seep into your blood. ‘Till your skin bleaches white and your veins fill with mud. Chorus: Oh! It’s dark as a dungeon and damp as the dew, Where the dangers are double and the pleasures are few, Where the grass never grows and the rain never falls, And the sun never shines in those underground halls. There’s duckways and crawlways and bottomless pits, You’re sore and you’re tired and scared out of your wits. If you slip from your footing you’ll likely be dead, But you can’t straighten up without cracking your head. Hauling, setting up, and taking down shelter and two folding tables. I suggest that the 10x10 pop-up shelter will suffice, but the usual 10x20 portable-garage thing is available if somebody wants to deal with it. Take various accessories like AMCS banner, our small tarps to cover tables at night against dew, etc. My truck (manual transmission) could be borrowed to haul things if necessary; the tables are 6 feet long. I can make signs with price lists for whatever is taken for sale and get change ($1 and $5 bills) for the cash box. I'm planning to drive my little car, leaving early afternoon on Friday. It will be easier and less intrusive to drive it and a folding chair, rather then the truck, around the site to participate in or at least view the various activities. [Texascavers] Ezells maintenance day
Cavers, I would like to thank the 6 volunteers who came out to spread mulch and finish old gate removal at the Texas Cave Management Association’s Ezells Cave Preserve in San Marcos on Sunday, 20 March 2016. Your labor made a big difference in combating erosion and in cleaning up the face of our property. Volunteers included Ken Demarest, Ellie Falgout, Denise Prendergast, John Schneider, Pete Strickland, and Sam W. Young. Finishing gate removal were Pete, Ken and John. They took out the rest of the concrete, removed rebar anchor pins, ground off broken rebar, removed the last three inch pipe from the wall and removed the plywood platform. Pete then patched the holes with a thin mortar mix. The only thing left to do is to secure the pipe ladder on the first drop. The rest of the crew spread mulch below Brown Street and removed a Japanese Privet tree. TCMA could not have made such progress without the many hours of volunteer time provided by each of you. Concrete removal and bamboo clearing will be on the agenda for the next maintenance day. The TCMA cannot manage our properties without the on-going assistance of volunteers in preserves (VIPs). Keeping up our cave resources is an ongoing chore, and one that the TCMA can only applaud as a job well done. Dr. Calvin Alexander has some wonderful pictures of the Martian landscape from some of the high resolution Martian probes that clearly show caves, sinkholes, paleo sinking streams, rimstone dams, and paleo and possible existing springs. If there is life on Mars, it will probably be subsurface and possibly associated with caves and groundwater. This should prove to be a popular presentation. Register and get there early. Register now! https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/6013464760054344705 Speaker: Dr. Calvin Alexander, Professor Emeritus Earth Sciences Department University of Minnesota. The Soudan Iron Mine in northeastern Minnesota mined high grade hematite from the late 1800s until about 1960 in 2.7 billion year old rocks. When the mine ceased operations it was given to the State of Minnesota and continues operations as State Historic Park offering mine tours to visitors. The mine has a calcium, sodium, magnesium chloride brine about twice as salty as sea water that seeps into its lowest level. The brine is anoxic (oxygen free) and has high concentrations of ferrous iron. These anoxic, waters are actively depositing a wide variety of classic cave formations: flow stones, stalagmites, soda straw stalactites and rimstone dams. These formations are made of the iron oxides ferrihydrite and goethite and contain the mineral jarosite – and are spectacularly colored. Photographs of Mars surface features apparently produced by liquid water, have increased in number, resolution and credibility. The “gullies” discovered on Mars by the high resolution MOS orbiter camera have been confirmed by the higher resolution HiRISE orbiter images and are now known to occur widely on Mars. In several locations on Mars the MOS and HiRISE images reveal structures that appear to be rimstone dams associated with the distal ends of gullies. The presence of iron oxide rimstone dams growing from the brines in the Soudan Mine suggest that those brines may be an analog for conditions on some parts of Mars. It is interesting to note that in the Soudan Mine brines form a productive environment for several microbiological communities. [Texascavers] Ezells Maintenance Day
Cavers, I would personally like to thank the 13 volunteers who came out to help clear dead trees and spread mulch at the Texas Cave Management Association’s Ezells Cave Preserve in San Marcos this past Saturday, 12 December 2015. Your many hours of labor made a big difference in combating erosion and in cleaning up the face of our property. Volunteers included Lee Jay Graves, Fernando Hernandez, Ben Hutchins, Vivian Loftin, Michael Portman and his grandson Oliver, John Schneider, Justin Shaw, Pete Strickland, Mark Taylor, Drew Thompson and Sam Young. Also, a special thank you to Colin Strickland who returned with Pete the following Tuesday to complete one task inside the new gate. In preparation for removal of the old cave gate, a crew including Pete, Lee Jay, Fernando, Justin and others at times worked on constructing a plywood platform below the old gate designed to capture concrete and iron waste when the gate is removed early next year. Others removed limbs and brush inside the chain-link enclosure to insure easy access for migrating bats. Vivian removed invasive plant species inside the enclosure and elsewhere on the cave preserve. She was assisted by Ben and Drew who also worked on the erosion control along Brown Street by removing dead wood and spreading a layer of mulch. Michael, grandson Oliver, John, Ben and Sam also removed overgrowth in preparation for a second shipment of mulch from Terry Raines, a longtime TCMA supporter. Meanwhile, Mark (with the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance), used his valuable skills to repair recent erosion on the trail down to the cave. He spent the day improving the water bars by channeling water away from the eroding surface. Later, additional mulch was spread on the trail to replace eroded material. We could not have made such progress without all of you. We were unable to continue work on the removal of bamboo at the downhill end of the property. Previous grubbing and hand clearing gave us an idea of how much more work there is to do (lots!). There are many more Ligustrum (privet), Chinese tallow, Chinaberry, and Agave on the lower slopes which remain and must one day be removed. So please stand by for another call for volunteers this winter or spring. The TCMA cannot manage our properties without the on-going assistance of volunteers in preserves. Keeping up our cave resources is an ongoing chore, and one that the TCMA can only applaud as a job well done. We are seeking additional funds for removing the old gate in order to restore the impacted cave ecosystem. If you would like to make a donation, please contact the Preserve Manager. [Texascavers] TCMA news
Cavers, Ezells Cave Preserve in San Marcos, owned by the Texas Cave Management Association, is in need of a new gate. Many years ago the cave was permanently sealed and the small population of Myotis velifer bats was denied access, which cut off the nutrient supply for many rare and endangered denizens living in the lake below. Later, the gate was removed and sporadic use by bats was noted by visitors. Later still, a new gate and concrete platform were installed which did nothing to enhance bat populations to return, although a few tricolored bats (Perimyotis subflavus) have been noted in recent years. A new gate is envisioned that would reopen the window into the aquifer and help restore the ecology of the cave. So how can you help? We have already applied for and received a Landowner Incentive Program grant but we need more to offset the greatly-discounted $13,000 price tag for the construction project. A lot of the design work and equipment is being donated by Jim Kennedy through his business, but we will need additional funds for steel and welding supplies. We also need to pay a welder. Please go to the Donate section on our website to pledge today. For those who wish to donate additional funds, we are giving you an opportunity to have your name welded on steel. For every $100 donation, we offer to put your full name on a length of steel which will be incorporated into the gate. Lesser donations may entitle you to steel initials. And we will need many volunteers to need carry steel from the street to the cave, lift bars into place, remove the old concrete platform, and clean up the site after the work is complete. We will keep you posted on our construction schedule via e-mail and Facebook. If you wish to donate your time and labor, call Ron Ralph (512-280-0648) or Jim Kennedy (512- 663-2287) and you will be added to the volunteer labor sign-up sheet. The Texas Blind Salamander (Eurycea rathbuni) will thank you. http://www.tcmacaves.org/financial/EzellGate.php ___ Texascavers mailing list | http://texascavers.com Texascavers@texascavers.com | Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/texascavers@texascavers.com/ http://lists.texascavers.com/listinfo/texascavers

Yes Fritz, we will use Lydia, a caver welder but will probably need at least one other paid welder. Also, some of the materials may not be completely covered by present donations. My goal was to give cavers like you an opportunity to support the cause and I have succeeded. You can mail a check to the TCMA: Texas Cave Management Association PO Box 7427 Austin, TX 78713 Just note in the memo section that it is for Ezell’s Cave new gate and write out your full name for us to weld onto steel. However, recent reports of infections far outside the endemic area indicate the fungus is either spreading or becoming active in new areas. The disease is contracted through inhalation of fungal spores, which can be aerosolized by soil disturbances from construction, excavation, gardening and landscaping, as well as natural events like dust storms, earthquakes, landslides and wildfires. Geoscientists working in the field need to take precautions against contracting the disease. Scientists say that little is currently known about the fungus' preferred geology and how a changing climate might be affecting its spread.
