It looks like my tentative road-trip is a washout.   I looked up synonyms
for"dud," and came up with:    kaput, unsound, defective, faulty, and bust.
I am not sure what the correct speleo-term is for this,  but the symptomsare
identical and equivalent to E.D. But a capsule of sildenafilcitrate will
not fix it.
So I am going to coin the phrase:   "speleo-kaput."     For when at the
verylast minute, you cancel your trip. This seems appropriate, since I have
readcavers use the term "kaput," on various occasions.

I managed to get my Sequoia loaded up.   I had winter-clothing, a cot,a tent (
I think I had the right poles ), but no fly, a good sleeping bagand mattress,
small ice chest, most of my new LED lanterns, and a tiny
bit of imaginary cash ( meaning some bill payments were postponed ),
and plenty of snacks and beverages, nice table and chair, and a
extra-large duffel bag.    Just saying, I wasn't totally unprepared, as
I often have been in the past few years.

I had what can only be described as spelunking gear, although it didinclude a
large Swaygo pack, real caving boots, and a decent Walmartheadlamp and 2
back-up headlamps, and extra batteries and Gatoradeand energy bar, gloves,
elbow pads and clothing suitable for a few hoursin a dry cave.  Where my caving
helmet is - only Oztotl knows. It is surely boxed up in my rental storage unit -
at least one or two layers beneathall the stuff I crammed in there after
Hurricane Harvey.

In theory, I could have stayed a seven-hour drive from Houston til Monday
evening.
My sixth sense ( which is normally quite accurate ), was subtly indicatingto me
that the stars had not aligned in my favor.
So I sit here now, at 2 a.m., sulking with a non-alcholic Fentimans Ginger Beer
andeating a bowl of ramon-noodle soup, mixed with a can of sardines, andvarious
seeds, wondering what is Plan "B," for the remainder of what isessentially my
2019 Spring Break.

There is a pretty good chance that I can visit my daughter briefly Saturday
nightand I have not really been able to spend any quality time with her since
school started.
And maybe some on Sunday too.    She did indicate she is looking forward to
thatvisit, as she just called me two hours ago.

Ironically, I think I may have had a place to stay in Thackerville, Oklahoma on
Saturdayand Sunday night, and even a free dinner or breakfast, had I not
tentatively planned to gocamping.    That was sort of a Plan "C," or Plan "D."

For the record, I did try my best to get 2 old Houston cavers off the sofa
today, andeven tried to coerce my now estranged lady-friend to tag along.   She
dumped meon Valentine's Day.    ( I really didn't think I was supposed to get
her a present ), butI did spend the day with her and take her to dinner.
Isn't that enough ?    We sortof made up, at least enough to take her on a
road-trip.
So assuming I don't waste any money this weekend, and assuming work goes well
thenext two weeks, then I should be able to plan a road-trip to Kerrville in
early April, if Ican get off work that weekend. Maybe by then, I will have
my Sequoia, more road-ready.

From a friend. Stay Home and get a better job. There's next year in Cookville

In reference to a recent post by a caver skipping the convention.

I am tonight pondering for the first time, what it would take to at least
attendthe convention for 1 or 2 days.   Sunday and Monday ?

My problem ( as if I only had one ),  is that I seem to have a 4 day window
right now, where I could make aserious road-trip, but that would leave me
missing all the official NSS activities.
I have mentioned this before here, but my first convention was the 1994
Conventionin Texas, and that was a whole lot of fun, but some would say that it
was just way toohot for such a gathering.    My next convention spoiled me
because I got to go on a realcaving trip into Cass Cave, West Virginia before
the convention, and since it was atthe official OTR site, a whole lot of fun
was had.  At each convention, I had somemishaps of some kind, that offset
the fun. In Texas, I got real sick after the convention, and spent a lot of
money being treated and missed a lot of work.    In West Virginia, I arrivedat
the airport in Charleston, totally unprepared to hitchhike to the campground,
and I think whenI got there I had trouble getting in because I had not
pre-registered, and I had a difficult timegetting back to the airport ( Roy
Wessel came to the rescue ).    In Maine, I had the very besttime of my life.
The only mishap I recall, is that a lot of effort was made to see Acadia
NationalPark, but it was so foggy when I got there, that I might as well just
stayed home and stuck myface in the car's exhaust pipe.    In Marquette, I
missed my plane, not realizing it was the last plane, that day, and a caver who
is on this list serve went above the call of duty to rescue me. In
Huntsville, 2005, my wife had an accident at the campground, tripping over the
tent wire causing our9 month old baby to fly thru the air and nearly landing on
a tent stake hitting her head on the cornerof a lounge-chair.    In
Porterville, I made the mistake of trying to pick-up a rider in LA on the way
back, and drive themback to Houston.    That was a nightmare.  My road-trip
to Vermont was just pure H*ll, there andback, and I was only at the Convention
about 4 hours at most, an hour of that was just trying to getsomeone to let me
in as registration had closed.    Nevada would have been more fun, had I
realizedmy car problems were simple radiator cap. And last year, my trip
with cowpoke and Mystery Caverto Albuquerque was bad, until I blew a
head-gasket only to learn that that requires replacing a V8 motorwhich was over
$ 10,000 by the time I got my Sequoia back.
In summary, I have a vague idea that even though I would probably have a hoot
in Helena, that somethingbad would happen similar to the stuff above. I had
a Craigslist ride offer today out of Houston, but itwas very very shady. We
played phone tag all day, and they were just too vague for my suspicions,
andthere was absolutely no way that I could get off work this afternoon.
Anyways,
Part of the nostalgia of going is getting to meet with cavers like Mr. Fleming,
so if he and his friends or colleaguesare not there, then that will be a
bummer. The chances of me going caving on this trip are less than
winningthe 493 million dollar Mega Millions all by myself.

On the subject of "Bang for the Buck" or value of what you get for the money
spent, it is true, I could find somethingfun to do for a few hundred dollars
closer to home, and not miss much work.
I am guessing there will be 200 cavers from areas like Montana, Wyoming, Idaho,
and other PNW areas, along with Canadians. And that those cavers, would probably
not come to a convention like the one in Florida.
Florida was a mud pit, but the tubing was soawesome on the Ichetuckenee River.
I decided on that float trip, that I was going to tell the machine shop
foremen,( where I had been temporarily working ) that he could take his job and
shove it.      That might have been a huge mistake, but I was about as senile
that day, as I am today.    And that is how I ended back up in the rut I have
beenin for the past 9 or 10 years.

I could easily spend a few days in the Ozarks in Arkansas just chilling.  I
could head south into Mexico, and go swimming somewhere like Micos.  I could
be more sensible and do something around the TexasHill Country.
I purposely skipped the 1998 Convention, because my old friend Harry Walker (
R.I.P. ) and my new friend VictoriaArbizu-Sabateur wanted to climb 3 or 4
fourteeners near Aspen, and visit the hot springs, and go rafting thruSnider's
Suckhole in Brown's Canyon on the Arkansas River and tour the commercial cave.
That was oneof the best road-trips of my life, although it was severely
marred by transmission failure in Harry's

But I am at the point today, where I either need to start turning down work, so

It might as well be in Hawaii or Alaska or Taiwan or Puerto Rico or Guam, etc.

Driving my Sequoia there, especially alone, would be one of the stupidest thing

Flying seems impossible, since I waited so late.

I imagine others will skip this year too.

But I had fun at Bellingham, Marquette and Essex Junction and Maine, and other

incorporating more information streams to be cobbled into a single “image”
would overtax small nervous systems.  I think that may still be the case,
because not all these eyes are image forming but rather are auxiliary
light-sensing units.  However, octopods integrate haptic (touch) information
from every tentacle and surface successfully.  But they are far more complex
and sophisticated (and large!) than spiders.  I have just looked at the
Wikipedia level, at a few other spider families and it seems that 2 main eyes
and a bunch of auxiliaries are common, although the Pisauridae (nursery web
spiders) have a lot of small co-equal eyes.
Lots of theoretical work has now been done on image integration for the
astronomical instrument version of this, namely interferometry, so possibly
some of that work is applicable to the biological version. Food for thought.P

I do know that John Kreidler does not want to be a contact anymore, and that DJ
Walker is indeed still the South Central Regional Coordinator for the NCRC.

Unfortunately it seems the organizers of this convention don't seem to
know much about the way NSS Conventions are typically organized. One
wonders whether they have ever been to one before. For example, they
scheduled a band other than the Terminal Syphons to play at the

 Long-time Texas Caver

  From the Terlingua Moon: 4/14/2015

Blair Pittman, who recently suffered a stroke, “is doing pretty darn
well,” according to his wife, Jean Hardy-Pittman.
The former long-time resident of Terlingua, who now lives in Alpine, and
author of the popular “Tales From the Terlingua Porch” books will be in
intensive rehab therapies in El Paso for some time, she said.

But “he is very lucky,” Jean added.

“His stroke was a hemorrhage, not a clot (embolism), and though it was a
large bleed area,” she said last week, “it did not get into the
ventricles which would have potentially caused much more damage.”

And she was optimistic: “He might come out of this stronger than before.”

I think that a list of responsible cavers could be put together and that these
could be allowed to cave if they request permission. Those cavers would be
familier with decon steps to assure that spores are not moved fron one cave to
another. Cavers could be a wealth of info at these caves that are being
protected. I know that they could do more good than harm. Dont we need to know
what is happening in these caves while they are kept closed for this long

Mark,

Your Deer Spring Cave crawl reminds me of a trip in the 1960s to the
caves on Cave Creek in the Pecos Wilderness in New Mexico.  Alan Hill,
Carol Hill, and I had heard about these caves and knew it would be a
beautiful hike (cave's entrances  were around 9,500 feet in elevation
as I recall) so decided to check things out.  The first thing we
spotted was an apparent resurgence in the creek bed and then up-canyon
found the entrance to the first cave.  About 1/3 of the water flowing
down the creek (fed by snowfields higher up in the wilderness -brrr!)
went into this entrance which is about 3-4 feet in diameter.  Alan
Hill, being an experienced wet caver of Mammoth/Flint Ridge fame,  said
he had seen two other entrances just like this back east and both led
to caves with over ten miles of passage, so he immediately got his cave
gear together (including coveralls on top of three pairs of thermal
underwear) and entered the cave.  Carol told me not to let Alan get too
far ahead or go alone, so I got my gear together (coveralls, one pair
of thermal underwear (not as prepared as was Alan!), and a
military-style web belt with a pouch on each side to carry water and
other
supplies) and entered the crawl.  The cave descends through a series of
small waterfalls at constrictions along the passage - a series of stair
steps with successively tighter pinches as you go downhill.  I did not
see Alan, so I hurried headfirst through the loud descent.  I could see
a faint light shining on the surface of a pool at the bottom of the
last little waterfall In came to and, not sure I could turn around to
go feet first, stuck my arms and torso through the small opening and
tried to touch the floor of the pool.  However, the water was deeper
than I thought, so I tried to back out and could not do so since I had
nothing to push against.  Then I tried to finish going through the
opening and jammed in the tight spot thanks to the canteen pouches at
my waist.  I could not reach my hands past my body to undo the belt and
while struggling, noticed that I had almost cut off the whole stream
flow with my body and could feel the water backing up above me.  The
water rose above my feet, and started flowing down inside my coveralls
and exiting at the neck right into my face like a fire hose, making it
difficult to breath and impossible to shout for help from Alan who was
at the end of the long, narrow room trying to dig out some logs from
the next constriction.  Just when I thought my number was up, the water
pressure became high enough behind me to tear one of the pouches off the
web belt and I plunged down into the pool and up to my elbows in soft
sediment.
Immediately surfacing to get a breath, I saw a big wave moving away
from me at roof level right towards Alan.  When the wave reached the
other end of the room, I felt a big concussion and then the wave
bounced back at me and oscillated once more.  I thought for sure I had
injured or killed Alan since I could not see him at all during the
commotion, but when I started forward to try to find him, his head
popped up out of the water with a big grin on his face!

Regards,

John

To avoid drowning you had to move forward a body length or so and then

Open Letter to the Members of the TSA

There is an issue of the Texas Caver now ready to print.  It is a
very special issue to commemorate 50 years of publishing the Texas Caver and is
also a brief retrospective of the last 50+ years of Texas caving.
Appropriately, it is 50 pages; much of it in color.  Several dozen people have
contributed to it in various ways.  Distribution of this issue will fulfill the
TSA’s moral debt to deliver the final issue owed but never delivered to the
2005 TSA membership.  At a past TSA members meeting, the TSA voiced support for
the publication of this issue.

Here is a quote from the minutes of the October 21, 2007
members meeting:

“Jerry Atkinson/Carl Kunath have completed* the 50th anniversary issue of The
TEXAS CAVER.  Mark Alman to handle printing and mailing of this special issue.
Allan Cobb stated that TCR would donate $300 towards this special edition.”

*Note: The word “completed” was incorrect.  We were then
working to complete the issue.  Now, after some delays, it is ready.  When told
that it was ready for printing and after having pointed out the practical and
ethical considerations involved with producing this issue, the present
leadership of the TSA has refused to print it.  Here is a quote from the
Chairman:

“Solicit “pre-orders” on CaveTex, in the TEXAS CAVER and at the
Convention in April for a price to be determined.  Probably around $10,
including postage.  If enough interest we would then order and mail them.”

When that plan was called into question, and the Chairman was again
reminded that this was something that was owed to the 2005 TSA members and had
been previously approved, there was a further response:

“But, if you insist on presenting why the TSA need [sic] to spend
over (now) $1500 (or 25% of our operating budget) for a six year old newsletter
that most people either know nothing or care nothing about, I’ll be sure to put
it at the top of the agenda.
If you consider this a good use of TSA assets, go for it.”

That is a bizarre and high-handed attitude, especially considering
the previous discussions.  So, yes, Mr. Chairman, we are going for it.

Were you a member of the TSA in 2005?  If so, you paid your
membership dues with the expectation that some member benefits would accrue.
What sort of member benefits are we thinking of?  Sadly, aside
from bankrolling an annual convention, about the only thing that TSA does for
its dues-paying membership is to provide the Texas Caver.  At least it says
that it will.  In 2005 (and a few other years) the TSA could not manage even
that.
Aside from a “feel good” emotion when you sign up, a few
lightly administered projects, and the promise of a regular newsletter, there
are no other benefits to TSA membership.  There is no welcoming packet.  You do
not get a mission statement for the organization or any sort of historic
perspective as to why it exists.  You do not get a copy of the Constitution and
By-Laws.  You do not get a reduced rate to attend a TSA function or to purchase
branded merchandise—you pay the same as any non-member.  You do not get a
complimentary issue of the most current newsletter.  You do not get a current
membership list.  You do not even get a membership card.  Yes, some of these
things are available on the TSA web site and you can download and print at your
time and expense.  But, basically, anything you do after handing over your dues
money costs extra—except you get the Texas Caver.  Supposedly.
What happens if the Caver is not produced?  What happens to the
funds that are collected but not expended?  Do the TSA members get a refund?
Hardly.  Not even an apology.  The funds remain in the general treasury until
such time as they are disbursed for the benefit of the general membership.
Hopefully.

If it is a money issue, how has TSA been spending its funds?  Is
the TSA disbursing significant amounts of money in ways that are most
beneficial to its membership?  How has TSA’s money been spent over the past 10
years?  Here is a brief summary of the major expenses as noted in the published
minutes:

2004    $500 to produce Devil’s Sinkhole posters.  (How many have been sold?)
2007    $1,000 to Honey Creek for entrance maintenance and improvements.
2007    The TSA convention lost $800 (Those in attendance were asked for
contributions to cover the shortfall.)
2008    Caver $2,128.29 over budget.  Cost for the

reminded that this was something that was owed to the 2005 TSA members and had
been previously approved, there was a further response:

2008

Oh, who are we kidding? We will _all_ see it, like The Descent and The Cave,
and
then when it's out on DVD someone will have friends over (hey, a drinking game

I'm looking forward to it!

Let it never be said that there aren't enough opportunities to go caving in
Texas!

Between all of our existing TSA projects (CBSP, Gov't Canyon, Longhorn), the
new
Devils River Project, TSS' Lake Amistad Project, the DFWG's Spring Creek Cave
project, and a load of other less publicized projects out there, just pick a
weekend and there will be something to do and somewhere to go.

As long as they're announced here and entered into the wonderful TSA Calendar.

Which leads us to our next new Project!

I began discussions over a month ago, during a sojourn to Longhorn, and after
having given a cave talk to a large group of Boy Scout leaders near Salado.

The general manager and landowner were very interested in beginning volunteer
activities with the TSA at this spectacular cave and, IMHO, one of the best
show
caves in the Southwest.

Here's what they initially would like for us to do:

Power Washing the trails - After hours (they close at 5:30) and using their
equipment. Rubber boots or tennis shoes recommended.

Algae cleanup from formations - Ditto, but if you have resto equipment, you're
welcome to bring it.

I'm thinking this would be a Friday night and/or a Saturday night project, for
as long as it takes or folks are interested, and they also have graciously
volunteered to take volunteers on a wild cave tour, either Saturday day or
Sunday AM.

No dates have been set, as I'm just trying to gauge the interest level. This
would be an excellent project for college cavers, due to it's proximity to
Austin (and DFW, for that matter).

Please contact me offline and I'll put you down.

Thanks again and hope to hear from YOU!

Howdy y'all,

TCR is a great event because it is attended by really great people. Thanks
to all those who came out.

Yes, it was a little dusty.  That happens when it doesn't rain for a while.

I did see lots and lots of people having fun and that is the whole point of
TCR.

I really want to thank the cooks for the great meal, the people who manned
registration, Pete for the hot tub and sauna, the Terminal Syphons for a
rockin' show, the vendors and organizations, and all the people who worked
behind the scenes doing all the things that make TCR happen.  Thank you to
everyone helped.

This year we tried to find the dustiest spot we could, you'll have to come
to TCR next year to see the next big surprise.

See y'all next year,
Allan

TSA Spring Convention- April 1st-3rd, 2011
Fort Clark Springs, Brackettville, TX

Enjoy the best-kept secret in Texas! Fort Clark Springs is a unique oasis
nourished by the Las Moras Spring, which has provided comfort and enjoyment to
visitors for over 12,000 years. Today, Fort Clark Springs is a 2700 acre gated
resort and leisure living community, bordering US Highway 90 at Brackettville,
TX. Since 1971, the Fort Clark Springs Association has developed this
peaceful,
secure place to live and relax while carefully preserving a significant
National
Register Historic District, which holds a prominent place in the history of
our
nation.

Spring Convention is a technical meeting with presentations from cavers about
project status, techniques, scientific developments, exploration and many
other
subjects. TSA Spring Convention is a great time for all of us to come together
with family and friends to enjoy group meals, presentations, workshops, new
works at the Map Photo Salon, treasures at the TCMA auction, business
meetings, and your favorite speleovendors.

Roger Moore and Mallory Mayeux will be the Program Coordinators this year and
they are excited to make this another great year of presentations. Contact
them
both at cavera...@aol.com, mmayeu4@gmail.comwith ideas or comments.

The Details:

   * Presentations at Service Center: accommodates 300 people, AC,
 bathrooms, and
a kitchen http://99.139.198.182:1069/nco.htm

   * Pets permitted on leash (there will be no one monitoring the
 campground)

This was a subject of debate among Texas Cavers for many years. And there was a
land aquisition fund established by the TSA.for the purposes of possibly
aquiring a site that could be used by TCR.or to buy a cave.an extensive
polling of Texas Cavers took place and even included the opinions of non-tsa
members. And 4 years ago; TSA members voted to use The land fund to pay down
the
mortgage on the deep/punkin preserve.

As for a future TCR site.I think the current TCR land system works fine
for the size (and resources) of the group that attends.

I am sure this entire topic is covered in depth in the classic: 50 Years of
Texas Caving.

your copy today before they go out of print.

I think Saj had a valid question.

I recall at some kind of formal Texas caver meeting in 1993 or so, a mention
by a caver that a land acquisition fund was being set up.    Whatever
happened to that?

I would think that if 400 serious cavers donated $ 100 at the same
time, you would
immediately have $ 40,000.    I doubt there are 400 serious cavers
that would donate
$ 100 at the same time though.

The other problem is that that kind of money could be used to buy a
cave or at least
do something to help a cave in danger.

And then you have to have someone willing to be responsible for the
property and
pay the taxes.

I can see cavers getting together to buy a small piece of property,
but getting something as nice as a campground like Paradise Canyon, is
clearly not feasible.

Back to Saj's original question, I think that if anybody hears of a
good deal they should
not hesitate to post it on CaveTex whether it is feasible or not.

But if the goal is for cavers to gather in the outdoors, there are
less expensive
ways to do this, like renting a campground.

Bill Steele and I went caving in Mammoth Cave over the July 4th long weekend
and
had a wonderful time helping to extend the known length of the world’s longest
cave. The Cave Research Foundation runs a 10-day Expedition in July that starts
with the weekend of the Fourth and runs through to the following weekend--we
were there for the first 3 days.

On our first day we spent 12 hours underground with Park Biologist Rick Olson.
The highlight of that trip for me was to be able to announce new world record
with each stretch of the tape, and to tell Rick after the trip, this is the
dirtiest I've ever been after caving in Mammoth.

On our second day we hauled five sections of a deer stand ladder to the
Bedquilt
Entrance with Dave West to check out a high lead in a dome near the entrance.
We
decided he needed more vertical gear for a safe exploration of the lead, but
then got a tour of the Pirate's Maze and experienced a Bedquilt Moment
(sort
of like a 'senior moment') when we realized we'd entered the same room via
three
different routes. Dave decided at that point that we should do a resurvey of
the
entrance sink.

On our third day we spent another 12 hours on a trip with John DeLong, walking
through borehole passage: Pohl Avenue, Turner Avenue and Mather Avenue, to
bring
a weather forecast (no rain predicted) to a group of 5 cavers from Missouri and
Arkansas that were camping for 5 days in the cave. Their objective was to
survey
in Candlelight River, but the water in the cave is higher than normal due to
the
May regional flooding, and they weren't prepared to be so wet and cold for so
many hours. They were all in camp waiting for us to arrive, and had decided we
should all survey that day in dry passage. John, Bill and I spent the day
crawling through mazy, tight passages, and on our way out of the cave we
stopped
and talked with the cave campers, and discovered they were surveying in mazy
walking passages! They had left their packs in the main passage, and on the way
out of the cave John and I stopped to slip some small, flat rocks into two of
the packs that were just begging to be rocked.

I guess I didnt want to invite everyone, but Im not keeping score. We do want
to work on maps and data and lay back. If you have a project cave and want to
finish a survry, for it you must go.

Wow, you did invite everyone...  I'm planning on telling people that will
analyze survey data and make a sketch of some short cave - that way we get
credit for doing something and people learn how to convert survey data into a
map.

Pick a cave data you have for that, and I will show you all how to convert data
to true horizontal and vertical measurement.  You can then lead a sketch lesson.

We are going to have a trip to the park and stay at the Conference Center
August 13 thru the 15. The camping will be much cooler and we can sit at the
tables and share  our tall tales of the caves we find, explore, and discover.
After you enter the park, the first turn to the left is a white chalk road that
leads through a gate. You can get the gate combo from me at
markageetxca...@yahoo.com  . We have plenty of time to get ready. We have
plenty of caves to explore and survey and maybe we can get down to 5000  feet.
Probably only in our dreams but we keep looking. Let Rafal or me know if you
want to come out. We might be kept out of the major bat caves in the park and
you will want to decontaminate your gear if you have used it anywhere but CBSP.
A mild bleach solution can be sprayed on your gear to clean it. We dont want to
bring sny spore's of the WNS into the caves here.
Happy Caving!!

[Texascavers] WNS in Texas

2 cents:
I guess this means that our Colorado Bend project might have to be posponed
until this WNS is over. The Texas Parks and Wildlife  memo said that caves with
bats would be closed to entry. Alot of the caves at CBSP dont have bats and the
caves we are surveying, it is not always known weather they have bats or not.
Some caves have been explored and mapped and bats not seen. Will we be able to
visit these caves? I hope that we will still be able to visit those but on the
side of caution, these too may be closed. This is a serious situation. We must
all do our part to try to contain this WNS. I hope that our warmer caves here
might isolate our Texas caves from the WNS. I would like to here what the rest
of you think and hear some of your comments.

Actually, Matt Zaldivar and I surveyed the final depth of Lemon's Ranch.  Mark

Just wanted to make you cavers aware that a new map of Lemons Ranch is now

now and the survey footage totals 949 ft. with a depth of 104 ft. This is the
third deepest cave at the park I am told.  My thanks go to those who helped
with the survey. They are : Will Harris, Ronnie Harrison, Rafal Kedzierski, Ed
Spaulding, Scott Boyd, Bonnie Longley, Justin Menking, Kurt Menking, Kathleen
O-Connor, Mark Sanders, and Jessica Stevenson. There are two dig leads at both
ends of the cave but both are grim. Both are in bad air. We were able to
complete the survey by running 225 ft of 6 air duct down into the cave to blow
out the high concentrations of CO 2. We plan to survey other bad air caves as
long as bats are not present in the caves.

I'm ok with you wanting a high quality print Jim, and most people are.
But why should the majority of the TSA membership pay for a few
people that want the high quality?

If the majority of the whole membership wants to continue paying, I'm
ok with it, but it always seems that the people who want the hardcopy
is in the minority.

My opinion, we put a monetary value with it, if you want a printed
hard copy, mailed to you, you get to pay extra :)  That would help
cover the rising costs of printing and mailing it, and would push more
people to use  the digital copy.

I know a lot of people are against this, no one wants to spend more
money, but lets be realistic for a bit and humor me.

Prices are going to continue to go up on postage and printing costs.
TSA is in the black right now, largely due to the few who went
Digital.  As overhead continues to go up, do we adjust membership
fees?

My vote, drop mailing copies (cept to those who want to pay a
surcharge for it) and go Digital completely.  This would save TSA a
lot of money, save Mark's sanity, and free up a lot of TSA money for
other things.

You could even drop rates for TSA membership if you wanted.

Charles

OK, so I'll add a story that's similar to Andy's...awhile back we had
a DFW grotto trip into a water cave and Bill supplied a number of
people with his famous red Whisk laundry detergent bottles as floats.
The older cavers out there (that includes me) will remember those old
laundry detergent bottles, they were approximately 4 thick and 8
wide and about 12 tall--just perfect to slide into your pack, and a
carabiner will fit on the handle. About halfway into the trip we found
a muddy side passage and Bill led a few cavers down the passage, but
he left his pack behind. Edwin Lehr had finally found an opportunity
to rock Bill's pack, but alas, there were no rocks to be found. So he
decided to fill Bill's Whisk bottle with water, which really caused
the whole pack to want to sink to the bottom of the passage. Bill
would have spent the whole rest of the trip trying to figure out why
his pack wouldn't float, but Edwin was new to the ways of rocking and
he was so pleased with himself that 5 minutes after Bill started back
upstream, Edwin asked him why his pack wasn't floating. That was
enough to tip Bill off to the fact that Edwin was messing with him,
and even Bill admitted that he wouldn't have realized the nature of
the problem until he had left the cave if Edwin had just stayed quiet.

Ask Bill sometime about how much his children like to rock him,

This may not count as rocking per se:
I was on a trip with Bill Steele and others upstream from the natural
entrance in Honey Creek.  He had a lanyard attached to his boogie board and the
end trailed behind him a few feet, just enough for me to grab ahold and catch a
free ride.  He would fuss with his board and gear at which point I would let go
and swim a few strokes on my own just to keep up appearances.  He finally
caught on to my parasitism but not before he towed me most of the way from
Whistler's Mother to the QA series.  Sorry Bill, I guess I should watch my
pack from now on...

Over the next 35 years, especially when I passed below those cave

So imagine my surprise at the ICS banquet when Bob and Debbie Buecher
came over and asked if I was missing a backpack. A few years ago Bob
was at that particular entrance and noticed a dusty pack stashed on a
ledge. He's got it at his home in Tucson and plans to reunite me with it.

 2) My other ICS amazing backpack story concerns the charity of my good
friend Bill Steele. One day I loaded up my backpack with heavy books
I planned to mail home (ICS proceedings, Derek Ford's Castleguard
book, Bill's Huautla book, a coffee table-sized French caving diving
book, the Vertical Bill Cuddington bio, etc.) Unfortunately, the
campus mail center was closed when I arrived but Bill Steele
graciously allowed me to stash the pack in his truck while he, Diana
and I attended the photo salon.
Later that night he was kind enough to hand deliver the pack to me in
Groad Hollow. As I schlepped the pack across campus to my apartment, I
remember thinking how smart I was to be mailing those books home--they
weighed a ton and never would have passed airline weight limits.
The never morning I struggled to get the heavy pack on my back and
made the long walk the length of the campus from the Pecan Grove
apartments to the registration building coffee shop. The mail center
wasn't open so I carried the pack around most of the day,
criss-crossing the campus numerous times for various sessions.
Finally I made it to the mail center with the backpack, where upon
transferring the contents into Priority Mail cartons I discovered a
quite large, beautifully stream-sculpted, authentic Texas karst rock
in the bottom of the pack. What a thoughtful

At this price, why do our dues go up. Explain Lucy!

From: Mixon Bill bmixon...@austin.rr.com
To: Cavers Texas texascavers@texascavers.com
Sent: Friday, January 16, 2009 4:40:37 PM
Subject: [Texascavers] cost of Texas Caver

I have gotten a quote from the printer I use for the Association for Mexican
Cave Studies on an issue of the Texas Caver. For saddle-stitched in a cover
printed both sides in full color and 24 inside bw pages (_four more_ than are
in the most recent TC), the quote for quantity between 150 and 249 copies is
$2.12 a copy plus $60 setup charges. The per-copy price changes by only about 5
cents for more or fewer. Assuming 200 copies, the setup charge comes to 30
cents a copy, for a printing cost of $2.42. Of course, this is in Kalamazoo, so
you'd have to add maybe another $60 for shipping to Texas; I'll be generous and
make it $2.75 in all.

Now add maybe 5 cents for a mailing envelope and 2 cents for a mailing label. I
don't know what postage actually is, but I'll guess for non-profit bulk rate it
is 40 cents a copy. This brings us up to a grand total of $3.22 for each copy
of the Texas Caver mailed to a member. At four issues a year, we're talking
$13. (You can do the arithmetic if there are more or fewer than 200 TSA
members; it affects only the setup and shipping.)

I'd say whoever is publishing the Texas Caver at a cost of $26 per member per
year needs to do a bit of printer-shopping. I won't blame anybody for not
wanting to deal with a printer in Kalamazoo four times a year, but deals not
too much worse must be available locally (remember you've got that shipping
cost as a cushion).

I realize there are some free exchange copies mailed out that also cost the TSA
something, and of course a small stock of additional copies for later sale (25,
say) will be wanted, but still I think the TSA should be able to afford to send
the Texas Caver to all its members under the present dues.

Whether older issue should be on the Web and under what restrictions are
separate questions.

 To all PAID TSA members,

It was decided this past weekend at the Winter Business Meeting at CBSP that
in order to forestall an increase in TSA member fees, due mainly to the cost
of printing the TC, we would like to offer PAID members the option of
 accessing The TEXAS CAVER electronically.

Since the bulk of the TSA budget involves printing the TC, the current $20
membership fee is insufficient to cover the cost of printing and mailing the
TC, calculated at $26 per member/copy.

 Do the math!

We did not think this was the best use of membership monies and our cash
reserves would soon be depleted at this rate.

 This where you come in.

Through the technical wizardry of our webmaster extraordinaire, Butch
Fralia, PAID TSA members can now sign themselves up to view the latest TC
 online, each and every time!

 But, that's not all!

What else do I get by doing this and why should I bother?!

 Here's why:

 ·                    It will prevent a membership dues increase, hopefully,
for quite a long time. In these tough economic times, who wants that?!

 ·                    This will free up a HUGE amount of TSA funds that can
be better utilized on projects, other activities, equipment, and other more
                        worthwhile pursuits.

 ·                    You will have helped get the TSA Back in Black,
 hopefully, to stay.

 ·                    You will be able to view and download the latest TC in
glorious FULL color, not just the cover in color in the mailed version.

 ·                    You will be able to view and download past issues of
the TC in glorious FULL color, not just the cover in color mailed version.
 All of
the 2008 issues are already online and past issues
that moi has been the Editor of will soon be added. Any back issues we can
 get our
grubby hands on will be added, as well!

 ·                    That tree-hugging part of you will rest peacefully in
knowing that you have helped preserve many a conifer by opting for the
 electronic
                      version over the paper version.

 ·                    And no matter where you may roam, you will have access
to the good ol' TC and the frustrated Editor and Secretary will not have to
deal with the dreaded Return To Sender/Addressee Not
 Found.

Not to mention that it just makes good financial sense.

All new registrations will be listed as pending, initially, while your
membership is verified before you will have membership access.

Butch has added Darla and Denise as administrators and they will verify that
you are a Member in Good Standing and will check this periodically. You
will be notified if your dues are about to expire and will be
unceremoniously kicked off if your dues are not renewed.

In other words, No TC for you! (Seinfeld reference).

The member area is linked in from the main menu at www.cavetexas.org.  Be
sure to buy one or five ICS Registration Raffle tickets, while you're there!

If we could get just 50% participation in the electronic version program,
one would be hard-pressed to find any red ink in next year's budget. The
 more the better, though.

However, please do not share your password info with the unwashed TSA
 non-member!

If they would like to receive the TC, encourage them to do the right and
just thing by being a true American and joining the TSA!

In closing, the Board and I implore, beseech, beg, encourage, and strongly
 suggest you sign up today!

Put the word out to your Grotto and to other cavers!

Help the TSA and help save a tree!

 Thanks,

Mark Alman and the TSA Board

I plan to be up thereearly on Friday, and could use some help if anyone else
can take Friday off.  We need to move the outhouse(so we can start using it),
and also cut up some firewood.  I’ll have a chainsaw with me.
On Saturday all trips will head out shortly after 9 am.  There will be at least
one survey team to the Lost Petzl Cave System, probably one to Gorman Creek
Crevice Cave, and others as needed.  I will have a listof priority projects
that need to be accomplished for the Park and the Cave Files.  There are all
kinds of caves in the Park, but if you have vertical gear, bring it, since some
of the caves have vertical entrances.  Mostly we will be mapping caves, writing
written descriptions, photographing entrances and passage features, updating
GPS locations, digging in karst features, and collecting invertebrates.  If you
already have an objective in mind, and your own team to do it, let me know.
The Caver Camp is primitive, so bring water, food, andyourcampinggear.  Plan to
take home all of your trash.  Please do not bring firewood to the Park, as we
are trying to minimize fireantinfestation.  Don’t forget there is also a
$2/person Project fee that will be collected Saturday morning.

I to would like to thank everyone who helped with the in-cave surveys. I know
that progress is slow but remember, the turtle won the race. I hope that the
project is finished before I go to that great cave in the sky. Again thanks to
all!!

Thanks for the comments Mark, but ultimately the thanks belong to all the
participants who came out and got dirty in the name of caving.  This despite
gas prices being what they are, and all the other caving activities in the
state as well as outside of it.

I think the only misconception is that the project is done.  There are still
caves to be found - especially in the eastern part of the park and across the
river.  There are caves still to be explored and surveyed - Gorman Creek
Crevice is about 1.5 km and going, Lost Petzl system survey still continues.

a report on EspeleoCoahuila? Were there any caving finds of note? What happened?

Went on IMDb and found the latest review (8 stars):

Hey there! I was able to go to Knoxville, TN, to catch the world premiere of
this movie where I actually met Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson, and the
director. They were all three very nice! The movie is very fun with not having
to think at all. I've never read the book, so I have no idea how true to the
book it is. The movie clocks in at 92 minutes, which is a great length. I saw
it in the REAL 3D, and I am so glad I did. The new technology makes the 3D just
incredible. Some of the special effects were very much animated and you could
tell, but the movie itself is visually stunning, very entertaining, has no bad
language, nudity, nor sex scenes. My vote is that for a good 1.5 hours of
entertainment with your family, this is the movie for you! Oh yeah, it opens on
July 11th, 2008--my 34th birthday!

I think that we can't take a movie like this too seriously. Mainly go for the
special effects (which I hear are pretty good).

That 1959 classic was no clunker. Its still a good movie to watch. It
definitely has entertainment value.

Mixon, you old curmudgeon! What's wrong with a modern, 3-D version of
a classic underground movie, especially since it stars Brendan
Fraser! He's way more entertaining than Paul Boone, and the new
version can't be more kitschy than the 1959 clunker.

Concho Ranch about 29 miles south of Ozona
was recently sold.

The real-estate website stated:

Concho Ranch is truly unique with its very own cave.

The cave has not been fully explored,
but many branches have been discovered
    through the main area.

In my opinion, it should be a priority among the cavers
in Texas to unite what little money we have to attempt
to at least purchase the entrance to the caves when
they come available, and some kind of easement to them.
At least by owning the entrance, you have some limited
rights to it.

However, the ICS is just 13 months away, so it would
seem that cavers efforts need to be focused on that
for the time being.      On one hand it would be nice
to have Punkin paid off by then.    But it would also
be nice to have just purchased some other cave that
we could take ICS attendees to.

If you could somehow get every caver in Texas to
unite behind a goal to buy another new cave, and
each donated $ 50.      How much money would that
be?    $ 25,000.      That would only buy about 20
acres in West Texas.    Right?

someone mentioned to me a trivial pursuit question regarding what
mammal lives in caves? the answer of course is bats . . . which
got me to wondering if bats habitually live any further into a cave
than the bears, cats etc which use caves as dens. I've personally
seen evidence of mice thriving way past the light zone and a climb or
two down . . .
