Gregg,
Discoloring, offgassing, and eventual failure is what happens with regular

According to those with experience.

Whats the reasoning behind using archival epoxy for cave restoration? Do
regular epoxies discolor or otherwise damage the rock?

Scott Harden, and active Caver, Geologist, Biologist, Mountain climber, and a
friend passed away last week. He was a graduate from UT and a very active
caver in the 70-80's. He spent a few years caving in the Austin area, made
numerous trips to Mexico, then moved back to San Antonio, and was actively
caving there for many years.

He spent many years caring for his ailing parent in the 90's and up until his
mom died in 2011. His health had been declining over the past few years. He
constantly emailed his friends with humorous, goofy, and insulting emails
numerous times each day, and when those emails stopped, and he wouldn't answer
his phone several of us were concerned. One of his friends went to his house,
and after he didn't get a response, he called the police who eventually
discovered Scott dead inside.

I am planning to host a memorial / celebration of his life at my house Saturday
April 18th starting at 6:30pm. Anyone interested please RSVP so we'll know how
to contact you with more details as we get closer.

Good morning cavers!

This is a reminder that the Greater Houston Grotto has their first meeting
of 2015 tomorrow (Tuesday) January 20, at 7:30 pm at the Texas Rock Gym on
Campbell.

We'll kick off our meeting with trip reports, recent and old, and then have
officer elections for 2015 and plan what we'd like to get on the agenda for
the coming year. We're actively taking requests and making plan to do some
stellar caving, so this is an awesome meeting for EVERYONE caving in
Houston to attend! (Or if you're just in town for work or whatever, stop
by, we love our non-Houstonians too) :)

Our pre-meeting dinner is at Five Guys Burgers Fries. (9762 Katy Freeway,
Suite 100, Houston, TX 77055 in the HEB lot at I-10 and Bunker Hill).
People typically start arriving around/after 6pm.

After our meeting, we'll adjourn to our usual grotto watering hole, Nikki's
Pub (10885 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77079), where we'll celebrate an
awesome year of caving! 2014 was awesome and this coming year will be even
better. :)

If anyone needs more information, email me! I hope to see ya there. :)

Don't dispose of your bad cordless batteries. Take them apart and you can
harvest 5- 10 18650 batts of which one or two might be shorted out. I had
three bad 18 volt batts. Now I have more caving batteries than I can keep up
with. Someone with more electrical knowledge might even be able to fix the
cordless batteries, which was my original intention. Till I discovered that
they were filled with 18650's.

If you don't like the idea of mineral spirits on your skin then just use
rubbing alcohol. Works almost as good. Or buy over priced deodorized mineral
spirits(tecnu). Probably just as carcinogenic as canned paint thinners. Any of
that is way safer than the doctor. I wouldn't want the shot that's lasted over
fifty years(Bill Walden). If nothing is available water and dirt makes mud. The
more alkaline the dirt the better. Add some ash to make it even more alkaline.
Whatever it takes to get the oil off. Anything to avoid doctors.

best way to prevent it is wash and wash and wash again with a good oil

I recently went to Poison Ivy pit in Bexar County. It lives up to its name. The
sinkhole was hidden by massive vines. Completely covering it save one port hole
about 20 diameter. It was the only way in so I rappelled thru that and saw
that I could have walked into the sink hole from the other side if it wasn't
choked with poison ivy. It was hanging 10' down the pit. The cave lives up to
its name, trust me. It didn't get me that time, surprising because I was in my
caving clothes(for those who know my caving attire).
The worst place to get it? Not the genitals. In the eye. Salt water every ten
minutes. After that I can largely ignore regular exposures.

reportedly, cured of their sensitivity to poison ivy--or, at least, it was

I have had it many times. I have now from TCR. The best stuff to use is mineral
spirits. The main ingredient in tecnu. Any alcohol based liquid will work. Rub
it on immediately. Rinse with water after about ten minutes. There will still
be a rash but it will stop it from spreading. Rub down tools with alcohol also
to remove poison ivy oil. I suspect my repeated exposures has built immunity.

I have gone solo caving probably four times. Usually it was unplanned grab my

you get when nobody knows where you are it's quiet all you can hear is your
heart beat. A small cave with little or no exposures or hazards suddenly
becomes a monster out to kill you. I do it for the adrenaline. I am always
extra careful with every move. One wrong step and they make a movie. I've

We're being protected from the truth. The news won't tell us what is really
happening. I have relatives who live in Europe. They know more about what's

It probably is. I still go to Mexico quite frequently and what I have noticed
is that what makes the news here, I don't see in the news there, and visa
versa. Makes me wonder where this news is coming from and how much of it is
true. Meanwhile, I do not know of a single person who has witnessed any of it
firsthand. Nonetheless it has been very effective in scaring off American
tourists including what I formerly considered brave American cavers.

For those wanting to keep up on the Mexican drug wars, there's a long article
in the July 2 issue of The New Yorker. I recall earlier press reports that the
Mexican army had seized a remarkable about of meth. From the article:

In February, the Army announced that it had seized, in a historic bust, in
Tlajomulco [Jalisco], fifteen tons of methamphetamine. The street value of that
much meth was, by the Army's figuring, some four billion dollars. If true, that
would make it the largest meth bust in history. But was it true?...

I tried to get to the bottom of a single bust--the historic meth-lab raid in
Tlajomulco that confiscated some our billion dollars' worth of drugs. Were the
drugs seized really worth that much? Well, no. The more experts I consulted,
the lower the number sank. Maybe it was a billion, if the meth was pure. Then
was it really fifteen tons of pure meth, as widely reported? Well, no. There
had been some confusion. There were precursor chemicals. A lot of
equipment--gas tanks, reactors. Maybe it was eleven pounds of pure meth. Eleven
pounds? Nobody wanted to speak on the record, but the spokesman for the federal
presecutor's office in Guadalajara, a young man named Ulises Enríquez Camacho,
finally said, Yes, five kilos. Eleven pounds. The fifteen tons had been
methamphetamine ready for packing, according to the Army. But it was not
finished product, and there had been only five kilos of crystal. In the U.S.,
where meth is often sold by the gram, that
amount might be worth five hundred thousand dollars. So the reported value had
been inflated by a factor of eight thousand?

I hope the body count is not off by a factor of eight thousand.

A while back I asked for photos of caver Toyotas. And I received some good
ones. Thanks! However, I'm still working on it. Cavers if you would, please
send me any action pictures of your Toyota(s), or another caver's Toyota(s)
4x4 doing it's thing, getting you to and from caves.

I'm also looking for short tales of adventure. Tales of heroism, plundering,
rescue, successes, etc. that your Toyota was involved in.
