Re: [Texascavers] Pete Strickland

2018-07-05 Thread George Veni
In the mid-1990s the entrance to Powell’s Cave, a major Texas project at the
time, became increasingly unstable. A team of folks conceived of how to
permanently stabilize it with stacked culverts, but when it came to the
critical details in executing the plan, Pete was there with his equipment and
expertise to make it go smoothly and safely.

About 10 years later as many of us planned to host the International Congress
of Speleology in 2009, Pete was again there involved in great detail with many
aspects of the planning. Of course he had the hot tub and sauna there, and
while he is often remembered for building them, he should instead be remembered
for building up the caving community. Through his constructions, pond parties,
service as the mainstay of Groade Hollow at NSS conventions, excellent camp
fires, and so many more things large and small, Pete built much of the
infrastructure that cavers gathered around to build friendships. I’ve no doubt
that the cement which binds the Texas caving community would be much weaker if
it wasn’t for Pete.

I had a similar reaction, Mark. I have no information yet, as I live in
Missouri.

I will miss Peter Strickland very much. I deeply appreciate the photos he
contributed for AMCS Bulletin 26, recently published. I hope cavers will have a
look at those, and many other wonderful photos by and of our senior cavers.

I have some photos of Pete that I will share with y'all in the near future,
going back to 1971.

[Texascavers] Pete Strickland

2018-07-05 Thread Mark Minton
Thanks, everyone, for sharing the circumstances of Pete's passing. I knew he
had been ill but thought he had improved or at least stabilized. It is a great
loss.

Pete was the one who pointed out a white, 4WD school bus for sale in south
Austin back in 1980. I bought it and used it for Huautla (and other) trips to
Mexico throughout the '80s. Pete helped me customize the bus for expedition
use. He came up with an innovative deck design that replaced the middle seats,
and used his welding skill to make the necessary brackets. He also helped me
install a second gas tank and mount a second spare tire under the floor.

Gas tanks came up several times in my past experiences with Pete. On one early
trip to Cuetzalan we drove Jocie's then-new brown station wagon down there.
That was soon after U.S. cars needed unleaded gas, but it was not yet required
nor widely available in Mexico. We were careful to fill up at every big city
where we could get it. When we got to Cuetzalan (which did not sell unleaded),
we discovered a hole in Jocie's gas tank. We drained the gas into buckets and
Pete removed the gas tank, flushed it with water, and used a Svea stove to seal
the hole with solder. We dried and replaced the tank, refilled it with the
salvaged gas, and made it the rest of the trip.

Pete also helped me add a second gas tank to my 1984 Toyota pickup (recently
retired with over 500,000 miles). Since Toyota didn't offer second tanks as an
option, I got one from a junk yard. Only problem was, the filler neck and
mounting brackets were on the wrong side. Pete custom-made new brackets and
mounted the tank backwards on the opposite side of the frame from the factory
tank (after I had the exhaust pipe rerouted down the center above the drive
shaft). The filler neck was concealed in the rear wheel well so we didn't have
to cut a hole in the body. That always got raised eyebrows when I filled up at
Pemex stations. I called it mi tanque escondido.

Pete was very inventive and could usually come up with a way to solve any
problem. He will be greatly missed.

Re: [Texascavers] Pete Strickland

2018-07-05 Thread Jay Jorden
Knowing that Peter had battled cancer privately all these years is yet
another testament to this giant of Texas caving. He had uncommon strength
of character, was a role model for how to do just about *anything* the
right way - and was an unforgettable force in regional, national and
international caving events. He was also a great friend.
Along with other new UT Grotto members in the early 70s, he led my first
cave trip ... to Punkin Pit. Thereafter, my caving gear (and college books,
usually unopened) were in the back of his Power Wagon on many weekends ...
for return trips to the Carta Valley area, to northern Mexico and beyond.
Peter and the cavers he mentored were - and are - like family. All the
years that have followed have provided opportunities to strengthen these
friendships. I always looked forward to the next time we could get together
- at TCR, an NSS Convention, or at one of Peter's legendary pond parties -
and usually in one of the hot tubs he selflessly built and maintained. He
really knew the true meaning of caver hospitality!
Condolences to Jocie and all the Strickland clan for their loss. We are all
greatly diminished as well.

I personally learned a lot about Pete I did not know, and it made me hope Linda

Texas cavers for her new column in the TC. No one is getting any younger, and
although caving in Texas since 1973, I know little about how some of these
great cavers got their start:) I bet others might find it fascinating too:)

Keep getting better Pete, and we just might get to see you at TCR!

[Texascavers] Pete Strickland

2012-10-07 Thread Mimi Jasek
Jim and I had a great visit with Pete, Jocie, and son Evan yesterday! Peter is
doing remarkably well, all things considered. Pete and Jim had a great time
cave reminiscing!

I personally learned a lot about Pete I did not know, and it made me hope Linda
Palit is able to do some interviews with many of our great and accomplished
Texas cavers for her new column in the TC. No one is getting any younger, and
although caving in Texas since 1973, I know little about how some of these
great cavers got their start:) I bet others might find it fascinating too:)

Keep getting better Pete, and we just might get to see you at TCR!

2012-10-05 Thread Mimi Jasek
Oh, Pete! So sorry, and good luck with your recovery. One of my bosses did that
last year, but he shattered his!

And Jocie, as his main care giver and therapy guru, my thoughts are with you in
a huge way! Been there, done that with Jim more times than I like to remember.
Hang tough, nurse or not!

Also, as one of the TCR chief cook and bottle washers extraordinaire, your
presence will be sorely missed! Will be thinking of you!

And don’t forget to send trip reports / articles / photos to the Texas Caver.

I'm posting this on behalf of Pete Strickland, for those of you who have
not heard the news. Most of you know Pete, and probably have been in
his famous hot tub at Texas caver events and NSS Conventions over the
last several decades.

Pete slipped on his wet bathroom floor last Monday night (Oct 1st), took
a hard fall, and fractured the head of his right femur. He is in the
Round Rock Hospital (just north of Austin) and is scheduled for at least
a week of "excruciating" (his words) physical therapy before he can go
home. His wife Jocie Hooper (a RN) and sons Colin and Evan are taking
turns to be with him. Just talked to Jocie who said he won't be able to
put any weight on the right leg for a month. When Colin made the
announcement on Wed at the UT Grotto meeting, there was much concern
about Pete, most of it regarding the possibility that he would not be
able to bring his hot tub to the upcoming Texas Caver Reunion Oct 19-21.
Although he probably will not be there, his sons plan to bring the hot
tub, and will appreciate help in setting it up.

He must have gotten a spider fracture of the femur head, which I assume
is better than splitting the femur in half. Arrrgh. Anyway, hope you
heal up quickly and get back on your feet soon, Pete! An old boss of
mine must have broken three different bones at her own home as well.

They say most accidents happen at home.

Hell, I know what I'm doing this weekend...

I'm moving!!!

Hope you get to feeling better, Pete.

Take advantage of being waited on hand and foot! It'll be over with
