While I send my condolences to those who got hosed, I am relieved to know that the traditional NSS thunderstorm made its usual untimely appearance. Some of you scientists out there need to determine why, no matter where it's held, this event attracts such severe weather. Thanks for the update, Mark. Re: [Texascavers] Re: NSS Convention ?
David, Well, let's see. Four days ago I was standing on ice. It was in Cave of the Winds, a tectonic cave on Mt. Mansfield, Vermont's highest mountain. Pretty good for August. Before I recap convention let me congratulate Bob Cowell, new Fellow of the Society, and Geary Schindel, the new NSS Administrative Vice President. Okay, For all those who said there was no caving; WRONG! It was just you couldn't fit. Well, at least, on the Vermont side. On the Adirondack side, the cave's were maneuverable and beautiful washed marble. And, like, I said, on Friday I was on ice. Many of the session did not happen for lack of entries. Mark and Vonny did a wonderful job of beating the bushes for an excellent International Exploration session. I especially liked the Kite Flying in Chinese Caves. The Geology session was a Milroy short course on the island karst of Bahamas, Barbados and Guam. The other set of talks where from Andraus and his students on the 'climate' of various caves including Jewel and Carlsbad. Late in the day, Matt Covington presented a paper that went by in whirl of variables but I think it looked very interesting. On Wednesday there was a presentation on WNS. One of the saddest moments came when someone asked how the fungus spread from Hasbrook Mine to Aolius Cave, neither place often visited by humans. "Maybe we did it." answered Al Hicks, the head bat guy in New York. You could see that they were struggling with the same thing cavers are. Even before they go to collect data, they asked is it worth the possibility that we will do harm. It was clear that those who have seen these massive die-offs are changed. We know more about WNS than I thought we did. The bat's are awakened by the lesions caused by the fungus. Some may survives but their wings are tattered and they can die well into summer because they no longer can hunt efficiently. It seems that while in hibernation the bats can not launch an immune response. That I read to mean this is a problem of hibernating bats, not the Free tail (Crash, correct me if I am wrong). Finally, it was a very old convention. They brought a cake up for Art Palmer for his 70th birthday. He was my advisor and I had no idea. Will White got ovation for attending successively 57 conventions. There was no award for a paper given by someone under 25 because there weren't any. The sessions I went to went very well. Yvonne Droms and I were in charge of International Exploration on Wednesday and we had a full day of exciting talks from China to Mexico and points in between, often with standing room only. My guess is that the average age was more like 50, but it is definitely creeping up. The Syphons were great, as always. The weather was often rainy, but that's par for the course at NSS Conventions. At least there were not high winds, so not many camps were damaged. Groad Hollow was in a nice spot in the woods, which was very nice. Mark Minton At 10:03 PM 8/8/2010, David wrote: I presume everybody is home safe now from the convention ? I feel it is important to discuss the convention, to encourage new cavers unfamiliar with the NSS to attend future conventions, and for those that really wanted to go, but just couldn't make it. This was a difficult convention for most Texas cavers to attend. Only about 13 percent showed up. But there were still more Texas cavers there than Vermont cavers. ( I bet this convention probably broke the record for the number of Vermont cavers to attend. ). I searched the web looking for reports about the convention, but did not find anything. I regret missing almost all of it. Maybe there are still some cavers that are not home yet, who have stories to tell? I saw nearly 25 cavers there from Texas, along with their families. Here are just a few that were wandering around the Howdy Party:Tom Summers, RD Milhollin, Mike Walsh, Jim Kennedy, Bill Mixon, Terry Raines & family, Mark Minton ( lives in VA now ), Peter Strickland and sons, Lee Jay Graves, Keith and Lisa Goggins ( of the Terminal Siphons ), Rene Shields, Gary Napper, Chris Thibodaux, Ellie Theone, Jim Coke, and Bill Stone.Who did I leave out ? ( Michael Cicherski, Benjamin and Corrine Schwartz, Kenneth Laidlaw, Josh Rubenstein and Rex Williams ) But there were also lots of cavers there that many of you know like: Dale Pate, and famous cavers like Roger Brucker and Dick Blenz, and most likely dozens of others that I didn't get a chance to say hello to. The average age of the cavers attending seems to get one year older at each convention. A safe guess would be over 50, but my bet would be 60. I think I saw at least one Facebook posting that the Terminal Siphons put on a great show. I posted my final road-trip report privately by e-mail, so if you want to read it, feel free to contact me. Some expressed mixed feelings about my intentions for driving to Vermont. I did make a last-minute faithful attempt to take cavers on my little joyride. I posted ride offers on Cavechat.org and NSS On-line Cavers, and here on Cavetex. Yesterday, I picked up my 4th Craigslist rider in Slidell, Louisiana and he paid me $ 40 to drop him off in Houston. After this experience, I would highly discourage others from offering cross-country rides on Craigslist. I would be interested to know how the sessions went, and the salons, and the Terminal Siphons concert. And more about Vermont, for example, how were the caves and the caving ? How did the weather turn out? I learned that Vermont has pockets of paradise that are well worth visiting. I only got to see 2 of them very briefly on this trip. If anybody wants to tell me about their trip privately, I would like to read it. This trip was probably the hardest of my life, but I had at least 8 hours of fun, that I could not have had, had I chosen to stay home. For example, have you ever been at the edge of a virgin pit in going virgin cave, and decided to turn around and head out, knowing that you would never be able to return? I wouldn't know that feeling, but that was probably how I felt when I started the car and started heading south after leaving the Howdy Party. When we entered the park we were handed an information sheet about the float trips on which it clearly stated that any disposable items would not be allowed on the river. They are concerned about trash, and will not allow anything that might be thrown away or carelessly lost. Larger, more expensive items are okay since the owner has an incentive to hold onto them. Nalgene bottles with beverages were allowed. I took my Darren drum with all sorts of things in it, but they did look inside to be sure I had nothing "disposable". We knew this was the case because we had asked people at Convention about the trip before setting out." Nalgenes or camelbacks! That was what we needed (a small group of us did the entire trip also and it was awesome). We started around 11am and took about 4 or so hours to snorkel and float and rescue an abandoned boat. Happy but parched at the take out. (Yes, we were warned at the beginning when we entered the park)and so drank a bunch before we left.) It was the highlight of convention for me at least. We actually still haven't made it back home to the farm. Decided to take a detour and catch the Florida then Louisiana High Points. So of course we had to spend a couple days in New Orleans' French Quarter. We knew this was the case because we had asked people at Convention about the trip before setting out. Mark Minton
Re: [Texascavers] RE: NSS Convention Report - part 4
Hi David: Even if the convention were to lose money, the NSS has a special convention fund where they take the profits from other conventions to make up the short fall. This is done so that conventions will cut the budget tight to hold the registration costs down on conventions, but not draw from general funds if they take a loss. Louise Power said: there is great value in looking your fellow person in the eye when communicating. You can learn a lot by seeing how a person reacts and responds that doesn't necessarily come across in the written word. I agree wholeheartedly. As Ediger pointed out, there is a lot of networking that goes on at caver gatherings, be it NSS Convention, OTR, TCR or whatever. I always encourage people to go to these when it is reasonable for them. There is no substitute for actually spending time with someone if you want to size them up for possible inclusion on a project. Get an idea of their skills, attitudes and how they perceive their potential contribution to a project. Most projects need new blood, and these gatherings are a great place to pick up talented individuals, many of whom are hungering for an opportunity to break out into expedition caving but don't know how. We have picked up several folks just this way. I would especially recommend such meetings to anyone wanting to branch out into caving beyond their local group. Mark Minton

John Brooks said: >I would enjoy attending more conventions...but would rather spend my vacation >time in other ways. This is especially pertinent to cavers who live in Texas. With Mexico so close, why not take that time and money and go do some great caving south of the border? It really depends on what you like. Many people enjoy traveling around the country caving in new areas and meeting new people, while others prefer to concentrate on the projects and areas they can visit regularly closer to home. In my opinion putting Convention activities on the web will not reduce attendance. I think that people who want to go to Convention will still do it, whether or not some of the activities can be viewed remotely. And who knows, maybe some people who see things on the web will decide it looks interesting enough to visit in person and start going to Convention in the future. One thing that would help entice people to go would be for the organizers to post the sessions abstracts on the Convention web site so that we could see what programs and talks are being offered. Last year the abstracts were posted about a month before Convention started. This year they still aren't posted even though the submission deadline was June 20. Grr! Mark Minton

Yvonne Droms and I were part of a group of 17(!) people who went to Easter Pit on the Saturday after Convention. It is a back entrance to Wyandotte. (See map on CD that came with the Convention Guidebook.) It has good airflow, and the connection no doubt accounts for much of the airflow in both parts of the system. We did not get to do a through trip, and I do not know if anyone went into Wyandotte proper on wild tours during the Convention. Easter Pit also has large borehole and big rooms, but a very tight entrance canyon and lots of crawling (much of it dug out) in the back toward the connection area. It is a fun cave and one rarely seen since it is usually closed. Mark Minton

David Locklear said: At the moment, I am not planning to take vertical gear. I don't recommend going without vertical gear if you plan to do much caving. There are a lot of pits in southern Indiana, and you will significantly reduce your options if you are not prepared for vertical work. I have been to the site of the NSS Convention twice before during the local Cave Capers event, and we always did vertical caves. Mark Minton
[Texascavers] Re: NSS Convention - driving route
David and Others going to the Indiana Convention: I have a ton of info on your questions. I live 45 miles south of Owensboro, KY and our cave group(s) have surveyed 100 miles under the 13 karst counties of western KY. We plan on being at convention from the 20th-29th July, including pre and post camps. We will take all day pre-paid convention karst/geology tours on the 22nd and the 23rd to hit some of the highlights in that area. Convention inside only plus party campground stuff the 24th-27th, no time to cave then! We will probably cross the Ohio River at Owensboro. There is a ferry at Cave in the Rock State Park which is fun. Cave in the Rock is worth seeing. An old pirate den on the river. Many interesting karst features worth seeing in western KY and generally not well known, i.e., no crowds. Lincoln's Birthplace east of Elizabethtown on I-65 is well worth a stop. Free and it is a National Monument. Abe's father selected the spot because of a cave/spring below the cabin. Jefferson Davis, another famous President was born less than 100 miles away at Fairview, between Elkton and Hopkinsville, KY. That place is a state park and another good stop..on and on. Do the Lost River Cave Tour at Bowling Green, KY or at least stop and look over from the top as it is a little pricey but so is everything these days. Mammoth Cave is the number one attraction. Make your cave tour reservations before you arrive. The best way to see and learn something about MaCa is to join and participate in volunteer work with the Mammoth Cave Restoration Group. CRF is more committing but of course in a class by itself. More if interested. Stop at our place if you have the time and we are here, but we plan on doing convention stuff for 10 days or so to take in southern Ind. There are things going on pre-convention at MaCa as well, but there is not enough time to do everything on one trip. See the 2007 convention website, from the NSS home page. We always drive these days. You see more and it is usually cheaper if there is more than one traveling. We just returned from a 19 day trip to the NE with 5 days at the Gunks rock climbing. It would have cost a fortune to fly and rent cars and I doubt if it would have saved anytime as too much time would have been spent around airports.
