[tw] Re: Steps toward better documentation: requests, suggestions, ideas, wishlists

2009-07-10 Thread shavinder

My modest suggestion is that there should be two main branches in
docs. One for tw users, one for developers. I know this is usually the
case, but even so. In case of user branch it should include docs for
all the main plugins uptil now. In case of developer branch I wish to
see a detailed API like there is for most other open source project
for example jQuery. I wish that a person like me, who is not a hard
core programmer, or a plugin developer should be able to tweak a
plugin easily by looking up the API and adding a couple of lines of
code here and there.
Currently there is no reference material and the only way to learn is
by understanding other people's plugins, but thats way too daunting
for me. I have always succeded in learning things by referencing docs,
at django, jquery, dojo etc But I have not been able to do that here
at TW because there is no similar documentation

thanks

Wolfgang,

Thank you. It was the 'containsAny' that I was missing. I was trying
to use JavaScript or Regular expressions in the 'contain' target

I most appreciate the help.

[tw] Re: Steps toward better documentation: requests, suggestions, ideas, wishlists

2009-07-10 Thread Mark S.

The problem with TikiWiki.org isn't so much the dissonance between
media styles, as the lack of structure. Without structure, there's no
"place" for things to fit, and everyone has a different idea where
things go. As a result, some topics are repeated several times. Some
topics are there, but so incomplete they might as well be deleted
until someone can complete them. Some topics are just stubs, for
someone else's imagined but unfinished structure.

In programming they used to talk a lot about "spaghetti code". With an
unstructured Wiki, you end up with "spaghetti documentation".

So I would suggest not just a master list of topics, but a master
table of contents as a backbone to guide contributors, reduce
repetition, and clarify omissions.

[tw] Re: Steps toward better documentation: requests, suggestions, ideas, wishlists

2009-07-10 Thread Dave Gifford

I think if FND, who was most involved previously in asking us to help
with documentation, could come up with a master list of topics that
need documentation, and if users could post here their additions to
that list, we could create a master list. The second step would be
finding a way for people to 'sign up' to do individual items on that
list. This approach would be better than just to have a wiki and say,
"Go browse the wiki and figure out what's missing." That is too
nebulous for me.

I created one of the 'quite old, and out-of-date' tutorials at the
time to get non-techies interested in TW. But various factors
conspired against my continued work on it:

1. I have my job and my passion in other areas, and TiddlyWiki was a
means to an end for me. My work to popularize TiddlyWiki was more to
help myself get the feel for it than anything, and now I have moved on
from the 'tinkering with TW' stage to the 'actually working with TW'
stage. I still use TW every day. But I don't come here very often and
I am not trying to create new stuff with it.

2. Morris has a much more complete tutorial, TW help. Last time I
'updated' I just basically took the stuff off his that I thought I
ought to have in mine. I don't see the point in doing that again.

3. The upgrades to TW make doing a tutorial a moving target. I don't
have the time or the know-how to keep up on all that.

4. Just as I was getting out of my tinkering phase, the wiki
documentation project was just getting underway. It got held up by
discussions on what the front page should look like, and I needed to
move on, and FND ended up doing much of the work, as far as I knew.

Anyway, if a master list of needs were created, I would be happy to
adopt a (small) section of it to write, especially a less technical
section. If we could all just take a section or two, we could make it
more helpful.

One thing that would help us all as we think about writing
documentation would be an 'version chart' - a list of the changes to
TW by version, and key things that are and are not doable in each
version. That way while writing we can keep in mind that users will be
approaching the documentation with different versions of TW.

I recently made myself a TW archive to remind me how to do certain
complex items in TW. Like, what are different ways to do to-do lists
in TW. Something like that would be kind of cool, parallel to the
documentation, sort of a showcase of functions and special features
within TW to pick and choose from.

This is off topic, but I must say that for a while, a couple years
ago, there was a lot of activity creating themes and bookmarklets and
use for education, and Saq Imtiaz was at the heart of that, and I miss
that. That was the most fun part of being in the midst of the TW
action, seeing new themes and ideas for TW, and it seems to have more
or less ended other than treeview, glass, and a few others. At the
very least, I wish someone could take over TiddlyThemes and get that
started again, as it hasn't been added to since 2007.

Many blessings to you all,

Dave Gifford

[tw] Re: Please diagnose and suggest remedy for this import error

2009-07-10 Thread IanO

You are absolutely correct, Mark.

Local file import using back stage.
I have never seen an error message like that in any TW
and I have been using TW every day for about two years now.

My environment is Windows XP
FireFox version 3.0.11
TW Version receiving: 2.3.0 I didn't have an empty.html for v2.4
TW Version Sending: 2.1.3 Its the Packing List application. I just
had an inspiration of using the checkbox tiddlers to keep track of
Active and Closed work orders. I wanted to use some of the tools as a
starting point.

In the meantime, I have been copying tiddlers and plugins by the copy
and paste method.
Any cautions you would care to give will be appreciated.

Thanks,
IanO

[tw] tiddlertweaker word pattern syntax

2009-07-10 Thread okido

I use datatiddler and now want to remove some data with tiddlertweaker
by word pattern, I used the replace text function.
For example:
following line {"rules":"2003/67", "reg":"2008/67", and many
more}

To erase both I gave it a try with a word: \"r*/67\" and replace with
"" is an empty string

I expected that the * would take of >> ules":"2003, << but it did not.

Any suggestions?

Okido

[tw] Re: Can't import with ImportTiddlersPlugin into 2.5.1 or 2.5.2

2009-07-10 Thread Mark S.

The backstage importer doesn't just report an error, it changes the
path name. I suppose this is to prevent the security error that will
arise if you import from an off-directory file.

There's a certain humor to this -- I can import from a questionable
server in Timbuktu, but not from a file deliberately selected on my
own hard drive!

Eric's plugin allowed me to import from a separate directory path on
FF 3.0.11 under XP using TW 2.5.2 successfully. Maybe later I'll try
it with FF 3.5.

[tw] Re: Correct syntax for multiple conditions

> Two scenarios; getting a list of tiddlers that
> have one of five tags (ie., 'ABC', 'NBC', CBS', 'FOX', 'WB', but not

I think you could combine this two examples:

List all Tiddlers that contain either a 'TaskToDo' or a 'TaskOpen' or
'TaskDone' tag
http://tiddlywiki.abego-software.de/#%5B%5BList%20all%20Tiddlers%20that%20contain%20either%20a%20'TaskToDo'%20or%20a%20'TaskOpen'%20or%20'TaskDone'%20tag%5D%5D

List all open tasks not assigned to UdoBorkowski (i.e. all Tiddlers
containing a 'TaskOpen' and no 'UdoBorkowski' tag)
http://tiddlywiki.abego-software.de/#%5B%5BList%20all%20open%20tasks%20not%20assigned%20to%20UdoBorkowski%20(i.e.%20all%20Tiddlers%20containing%20a%20'TaskOpen'%20and%20no%20'UdoBorkowski'%20tag)%5D%5D

> and the second scenario being tagged as
> 'Consultant' and title starting with 'Smith'.

And these two:

List all Tiddlers that contain the tag 'systemConfig'
http://tiddlywiki.abego-software.de/#%5B%5BList%20all%20Tiddlers%20that%20contain%20the%20tag%20'systemConfig'%5D%5D

List all Tiddler with titles containing the text 'it', sorted by their
titles descending
http://tiddlywiki.abego-software.de/#%5B%5BList%20all%20Tiddler%20with%20titles%20containing%20the%20text%20'it'%2C%20sorted%20by%20their%20titles%20descending%5D%5D

Feel free to ask again if you run in any problems.

[tw] Images and Drag and Drop

2009-07-10 Thread Jonathan

Ok I am currently using the FCKeditor plugin for a WYSIWYG editor. I
am also trying to use TiddlyLightBoxPlugin to create image thumbnails
that when clicked popup a larger image.

All the pictures and thumbs live in one area right now so I can script
it a little bit but This project is not for the web it is a local
server setup for my company. We are using it for a departmental wiki
to help us. We are a college electronics repair shop and we have a
ton of different systems we maintain. I can handle inserting pictures
inline in the manner described above but I want to have the none
programming oriented people in my department to have this ability to.
Is there something that will work with drag and drop and an editor
that will let me put pictures into the system? Currently drag and drop
doesn't work because the files URL is a server location. It truncates
the file name a bit and then I can see the images in the editor but
outside of the editor the disapear. Also these images are full size
and that is bad because the high rez photos are just to big. Thats why
I want the lightbox plugin to work. Any Ideas? Suggestions?

[tw] Re: Can't import with ImportTiddlersPlugin into 2.5.1 or 2.5.2

Sounds like this known issue:
 http://tiddlywiki.org/wiki/Firefox#File_Access

Eric's plugin provides a custom file picker to get around this issue.
However, it's possible that technique breaks in Firefox 3.5.

So this might not be related to TiddlyWiki 2.5.x. I'm not entirely sure
at this point though.

Thanks for your help.

I've tried the plugin you referenced and it works now. Strange, I
tried this one yesterday and all that showed up was "Error in macro

fine.

Thx.

They're all just TiddlyWiki documents - i.e. they're self-contained,
there are no dependencies between the individual files.

The LessBackupsPlugin should suit your needs:

Have you tried the latest version linked from here:
 http://tiddlywiki.org/wiki/Table_of_Contents_For_Individual_Tiddlers

This might come in handy:

[tw] Which backups can be deleted?

2009-07-10 Thread tomasko...@gmail.com

Hi,

I was wondering which of the backup files can be deleted? Is there
something as a plugin or macro that deletes backup files automatically
once they are too old and/or there are too many of them in the folder?

I've also come across a couple of plugin sites, and it seems that some
of these plugins do not work with newer versions of TW (I use 2.5). In
particular DCTableofContents does not work. Can anybody point me to an
alternative?

Thanks.

S.

[tw] Steps toward better documentation: requests, suggestions, ideas, wishlists

2009-07-10 Thread Alex Hough

On the 'jQuery: "little applications as demonstration models for
people to try and see some of the advantages of jQuery"' thread [1]
Cory S made some comments and suggestions [2] about from the
perspective of someone knowing little about html, css, javascript and
jQuery, and about the problems on relying on help from the group and
many TiddlyWiki help sites being 'quite old, and out-of-date'

FND has made some good points on 'Announcing Tiddlywiki 2.5.2' :

"Perhaps that's due to it being a MediaWiki instance, so we might set
up TiddlyWebWiki there at some point in the future if that's desired -
but I don't think that alone would resolve the issue."[3]

Wolfgang thought that a TiddlyWebWiki was a good idea and Jeremy
thought "I think we're all a bit sad about the barriers to
contribution on the mediawiki instance at tiddlywiki.org. And the
dissonance between mediawiki and tiddlywiki is awkward."[4] Given that
TiddlyWeb is close to a '1.0 release' [5] I would like to propose that
we could experiment with a TiddlyWebWiki instance. This would be good
for TiddlyWiki help and TiddlyWeb adoption.

But FND is very wise to state that this alone will resolve the issue.
This is a coordination issue in the first instance. Requests,
suggestions, ideas and wishlists need to be collected in the same
place. Starting this thread is an attempt to do this.

I wonder if those interested in documentation could form a special
interest group – simply by using a set of conventions for
communication would do it e.g. posting discipline, perhaps some skype
action?!? – to look at the task in an organized way.
I think that:
1) incremental change can't really get us any further;
2) it is a good time for the community to make an attempt at
optimising its self organisation;
3) in an open source community, the lead should come from community
endeavor (ie it should not be dependent on funds from sponsors – in
TiddlyWiki's case BT and Unamesa

I see two steps toward better documentation.
1) find out what people want: they can post to this thread, (or needs
can be collected on this thread?)
2) design a solution to be implemented on TiddlyWeb
