RE: [tips] CBC News - Canada - Hype can make us all ill

2009-11-04 Thread Helweg-Larsen, Marie
He (Alan Cassels) speaks as if he might know something about the scientific
process and calling for logic and rationality in dealing with the flu
epidemic. But several things he said seemed inconsistent or illogical. For
example, he says: Repeating the refrain that the vaccine is safe and
effective is fine for reassurance but it is starting to sound strained because
*no one can say with 100 per cent confidence* [my emphasis] that the new flu
vaccine won't cause adverse effects in some people. But no one can ever say
about anything with 100% confidence say that something is safe for everyone. In
fact, is that the standard we should aim for? Is there any drugs that we can
say about? Furthermore, it is impossible to tell in an individual person
whether an adverse outcome is related to the vaccine or something else - only
population studies comparing incidence can do that.

He also says that public health officials are doing their job but then later
says that it is unethical to promote vaccines without randomized studies.

I agree with Stephen. Why not avoid illness (that for some difficult to
pre-identify people is fatal). My students are sure stressed about missing
school for a week when they get the flu - why not avoid that?

Very interesting and I find myself in agreement with most, if not
all of it (although it would have useful to have a reply from a
government spokesperson advocating vaccination).

But here's the key point for me. Death is an extremely rare
occurrence, so mortality is not the issue. However, coming
down with the flu, whether swine or seasonal, is much more
likely. Even though you will survive it, it's not going to be a
pleasant experience, what with fever, coughing, headache,
muscle pain, running nose, fatigue, not to mention a good
chance of diarrhea and vomiting. I'd rather pass on that fine
experience, or at least improve my chances of missing it.

True, flu shots of a particular kind may be of limited value, and
it's shameful that we have few randomized trials, but given the
current reasonably sophisticated understanding of how
vaccines work and admittedly imperfect statistics which say they
do, I'm willing to bet in favour of them. Certainly, vaccination
success against dread diseases such as polio and smallpox
have transformed our lives for the better.

Alarmist claims about how the flu vaccine will cause
Guillain-Barré, autism, cancer, or bad breath don't cut it with
me. I'm fine with the idea that risk is almost totally absent,
except perhaps for minor injection discomfort. . So given its
potential to prevent or ameliorate a very nasty experience, and
its almost total lack of risk, I'd say, why not go for it. Might help,
can't hurt.

Except. I forget about those four to eight-hour waits, outside in
an early Canadian winter, with people beside you sniffing and
sneezing and coughing.

If they could do something about that, I'd take the jab.
Otherwise, I think I'll stay home.

(And why must people be treated like cattle? Can't they just give
us a number, or tell those with odd and even social insurance
numbers to show up on different days, or go by alphabet? Why
do people have to be subjected to such pointless and cruel
waits?)

[tips] return APA 6e ?

2009-11-04 Thread Blaine Peden
A recent email from APA said that there would be a procedure for returning
the incorrect copies of the Publication Manual for replacement (see below).
Any one have more information on system APA put into place?

thanks, blaine

IMPORTANT: In order to receive a replacement copy the purchaser will have
to return their current copy of the manual (6th edition) to APA directly.
The return must be in transit to or received by APA no later than December
15th, 2009. The returned copy requirement is to protect APA against those
first printing copies reemerging on the secondary market and therefore
hurting future sales.

We would like to make this return as cost neutral to the customer as
possible. We are researching being able to provide pre-paid postage that
purchases can use to return their current copy of the manual. We expect to
have this system up and running by November 2.

Subject: RE: 6th edition of Style Manual

Dear Julie A. Penley, PhD:

Thank you for your email. We regret that there were errors in the 6th edition
of the Publication Manual and the inconvenience this has caused you. We are
working on ways to make it right.

We have produced a detailed corrections summary which is more exhaustive and
easier to use than the original summary on the web. This document notes all
the known errors in the Manual and puts them in some context. A PDF version of
the supplement is available now. You can access the corrections summary right
here: http://supp.apa.org/style/pubman-reprint-corrections-for-2e.pdf

We are also going to provide a printed version of the supplement. If you want
a printed version, they are currently available and can be ordered through the
APA Service Center - 800 374-2721. These are designed to easily fit into your
copy of the Manual.

Many people have found that the corrections supplement meets their needs; if
you find however that it doesn't meet yours, we will send you a replacement
copy of the second printing (the second printing corrects all the known errors)
of the Manual at no cost to you.

Before you continue, please double-check to make sure that you have the first
printing. The second printing was released in spiral bound and hardcover in
August, and has been widely available. Go to the copyright page and look for
the words Second Printing and a copyright date of August, 2009. If you
see that, then you have the corrected edition.

We are making the replacement process available to anyone who purchased the
manual. In order to receive a replacement manual, you will have to return your
current copy of the 6th edition to APA no later than December 15. We would
like to make this transaction cost neutral to you, and will have a pre-paid
postage plan in place. This process will be available between November 2nd and
December 15th. If you are interested in a replacement copy please contact the
APA Service Center after November 2 for further information - Service Center
staff can be reached at: 800 374-2721. Please note that we will not be able
to exchange instructor review copies.

Thank you again for taking the time to write to us, I hope these options meet
your needs.

I haven't had time as yet to go through and review for errors etc. but there
seems to be enough in my brief review to recommend this site. There are
quizzes for checking progress as well that provide instant feedback when the
answer is chosen. There are really good static and dynamic images of the
functioning of various parts of the brain and sensory systems etc. This is
maintained and offered online by the University of Texas Health Science Center
in Houston. The flash images do take some time to load if you are on a slow
network. This link is to the Table of Contents page.

It is http://ipip.ori.org/

but is different from a repository for validated personality tests. It's a

Re: [tips] Personality tests

2009-11-04 Thread Serafin, John
Whoa! Thank you to Mark, Marc, and William. I don't teach personality, but I do
like to use tests like some of these in statistics when I introduce them to
reliability and item analysis. These sites have just greatly expanded the tests
that I can draw upon in that regard.

Thanks again!

2009-11-04 Thread Marc Carter

They're really cool for teaching about survey construction and administration,
and for letting the students get data to work with that they're actually
interested in (instead of giving them some canned dataset).

I really like them: you just turn them into Likert-scale items, and zut! you're
done.

Re: [tips] Article in WSJ on study how brain develops without Dad.

2009-11-04 Thread Joan Warmbold
Stephen,

I do wish you would talk to me in your posts as opposed to talking 'about
me,' in a fairly dismissive tone I might add. I think we all wish to
maintain a high level of civility on TIPS, even between/among folks who
have quite different opinions on an important topic.

Relative to my original post offering to provide a critique of Harris, I'm
fairly certain I offered to send a copy of my criticisms to those who
requested such as opposed to the entire listserv. I didn't receive any
requests after that post but have received three following my most recent
post. As I told each of them, I will send my critique to them early next
week. BTW Stephen, all three expressed a similar concern about the level
of scholarship displayed in Harris's book, The Nurture Assumption. They
have chosen to not jump into the fray, which I totally understand, but I'm
clearly not alone on this one. I also will send a very brief summary of
my concerns to this listserv.

Relative to research that has revealed the importance of the early years,
I do have a special interest in infant mental health so have been exposed
to multitude of research studies on the impact of unpredictability and
abuse on brain development, how quality of attachment influences a child's
social skills and curiosity, how style of parenting (authoritarian vs
authoritative vs permissive) influences a child's self-esteem, maturity,
and industriousness, etc. I hadn't considered that my interests and area
of study have exposed me to research studies that are not part of the
general knowledge base of all psychologists. So yes, I will be more than
happy to provide a list of citations on this topic.

Relative to this research, a relatively recent and prominent concern is
how strongly a child's inborn temperament and aptitudes influence how
parents interact with their child. While acknowledging that there exists
quite a persuasive perspective that a child's display of interest or lack
there of could influence how parents choose to intellectually stimulate
their child, I am far less impressed with the contention that a child's
inborn temperament has a significant impact on styles of parenting that
influence children's social-emotional development.

Joan Warmbold said (Nov 2/09: Article in WJS):

And please, please read the book by Judith Harris as it is sadly
an example of profoundly poor scholarship as well as a blatant
ignorance of the role of certain major players in the history of
psychology. As I have offered previously, I have made a critical
analysis of her book that I would be glad to share with
 whomever.

We've been here before (see Joan's post of March 16/08). Her
only specific criticism then was that Harris failed to provide any
references. This is in fact untrue, as Harris in both her books
(No Two Alike and The Nurture Assumption, now in a revised
10th anniversary edition) meticulously mega-documented her
work with references. Joan's error, for which she apologized,
suggests something less than a careful reading of Harris, which
does not bode well for Joan's claims against Harris.

As for Joan's previous offer, this is what she said back on
March 16, 2008, more than a year and a half ago:

I have been spending much time today reviewing this text and
will provide a number of examples of statements in this book
later this week that are quite unfounded and provide no citation.

I waited patiently but none appeared. I'm still waiting. She now
tells us that that she has prepared an entire critical analysis, but
rather than presenting it on TIPS, we must request it. Speaking
for myself, I would rather not, as I don't have the patience for
perusal off-list of a document which strikes me as unpromising.

But there is something simpler which Joan could do for us to
support her as-yet unsupported strong opinion. She could
identify one published research study which in her opinion
irrefutably shows that parental upbringing does impact adult
 personality.

Harris has carefully examined many such studies purporting to
show parental effects, and finds not one to be convincing.
Notwithstanding, if Joan knows of such a study, she should tell
us. I anticipate, though, that it will turn out to have one or more
flaws. These include such matters as drawing causal
conclusions from correlational data, ignoring plausible
alternative hypotheses, massaging the data through cherry-
picking results or through misusing multiple comparisons, or
the study failing to replicate. Harris has noted many such flaws.
Harris has also pointed out that in some cases data which was
claimed to produce highly convincing results turned out on
closer examination not to exist. So I'm not expecting a knock-
 out study from Joan.

Joan, I should mention, seems to have an unfortunate tendency
to let her prior beliefs determine what conclusions she draws
from a particular study. That is, she picks the hypothesis

Mentioning day care in a list of evills that include poverty and drug abuse

Actually, I don't --assume-- it has to be bad (daycare), that is at
least partly an empirical question: Empirical as to its effects, moral
as to whether it is bad or not.

I only tried to list some things I think would more than likely have
negative effects on children (alchoholism, poverty, drug abuse) with
others which may, such as daycare and frequently moving so that the
child does not have a stable place to call home.

I think most people make the best and wisest decisions that they can
(especially with regard to their children's welfare) given their
circumstances, opportunities (or lack thereof), and knowledge. So, I
actually spend no time bickering about other people's personal choices
precisely because they are their personal choices. Life is to complex,
short, and unpredictable and I have neither the time, the wisdon, nor
the desire to make such judgements.
