RE:Data Analysis
Thanks for all the responses. The problem I have with Kruskal-Wallis and the Mann-Whitney is that I have a lot of ties. The sample is about 500 in size distributed among 5 ordered categories. Stephen A. Truhon, Ph.D. Department of Social Sciences Winston-Salem State University Winston-Salem, NC 27110 The ordinal scale of the dependent measure might make one reluctant to use a t-test. But a non-parametric version of the t-test (e.g., Mann-Whitney) might capture the difference in problem severity between the two groups. Claudia Stanny Claudia J. RE: Surnames
Title: RE: Surnames How about Leann Lipps Birch who has done research on taste? Stephen A. Truhon, Ph.D. Department of Social Sciences Winston-Salem State University Winston-Salem, NC 27110 Subject: Surname and academic/research correlation From: Stephen Black [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Mon, 29 Mar 2004 15:33:40 -0500 X-Message-Number: 29 I must confess. After recently discovering both Dr. Putz and Dr. Bone, I knew I had to write a note about them, and I threw in Dr. Bird for good measure. These people and their occupations are real, but my intention was purely frivolous (one respondent told me he laughed out loud, which was exactly the response I was hoping for). I'm delighted with the enthusiastic contributions I received. But I'm especially pleased with the contribution of Marie Helweg-Larsen, who cited an important paper in this area (Pelham et al, 2002), thus proving that even a totally frivolous contribution can lead to greater things on this list. We appear to have founded the new field of nominological psychology (NP) Nevertheless, I have to say regarding that seminal paper in NP that, despite its appearance in the holy _Journal of Personality and Social Psychology_, I have considerable doubt. I, for one, will reserve judgement concerning the conclusion that people tend to live in cities whose names begin with their birthday number, at least until it's been replicated a number of times. Remember dihydrogen monoxide! I also regret that no one asked me to explain the Dr. Putz allusion. Perhaps everyone already knows it. After, all Woody Allen wrote a play with that title (well, he would, wouldn't he). I now summarize the contributions to the emerging field of nominological psychology, including a few more of mine: Dentists and Doctors Dr. Payne (three) Dr. Doctor (two) Dr. Graves Dr. Hurt Dr. Moen Scientists, Academics Henry Bone (osteoporosis) David Bird (avian science) Martin Braine (cognitive psychology) B. I. Fagot (sex and gender-role) J. H. Semans (premature ejaculation) Lord Brain (neurology) Doc Holliday (psychology) Maida Semen (graduate student) Timothy Pons (neurscientist) Dr. Hand (foot specialist) Prof. Lick (course on sexuality) Administrators Nancy Graft (bursar) David Necessary (bursar) Dean Dean (two of them at different times at Bishop's) Lord Brain, the eminent neurosurgeon, editor of the journal _Brain_, and author of _Brain's Diseases of the Nervous System_ (7th. ed. 1969) requires a footnote. I believe he chose the name Brain on being appointed a lord, so the causal arrow is reversed in this case. Finally (but new letters keep coming), like the proposed paper on pain by Payne and Herdegen, I once supervised a student named White. Together with Chris Green, a student around that time, I fantasized that we couuld produce a colourful paper co-authored by Black, Green, and White (alphabetic order, of course). But the only group I know who have really done something like this are three famous physicists, one of whom was invited to share authorship solely to make the pun work. The paper is: Alpher, R., Beth, H., Gamow, G. (1948). The origin of chemical elements. Physical Review, 73, 803-4 [usually explained as alpha, beta, gamma, although I wonder whether Gamow really meant aleph, bet, gimmel] Stephen ___ Stephen L. Academic Freedom in Core Courses
Thanks for the previous comments. There are certain common goals, objectives, and preferred topics that the faculty in psychology are in agreement upon for general psychology. But there are some other items in the common outline that are being requested such assignments and methods of instruction. Academic Freedom and Core Courses
We have received a request from the dean's office that we develop a common syllabus for core courses in our area (i.e., General Psychology). While I am supportive of the idea of setting standards for what students should know when they exit General Psychology, I am concerned setting up such a common syllabus would violate instructor's academic freedom to teach their courses as they see fit.
