[TMIC] Tuesday update (1 to 4 sleep again)
Morning, well here it is 1 to 4 again! I had no clue I would be in this much pain…. Will have to wait on surgeon to see if I get to go home today…. Ready to get out of here. They have a tube in my neck draining and once they look at that they might be able to determine if I can go home today. Other than tired (getting used to 3 hours sleep) feeling ok, of course neck is sore. They have these compression wraps on both of my legs that squeeze my legs intermitly prevent blood clots and let me tell you they feel great, want to see if I can sneak this home! LOL So let’s home Dr Lets me go home today
RE: [TMIC] Tuesday update (1 to 4 sleep again)
re leg wraps: this reminds me of last April when I had a spleneotomy; I woke up wearing these leggings up to my private parts: boy was I scared here I was in recovery wondering if they had done a sex change operation by mistake; the nurse then explained as you said it was to prevent blood cllots; you are right they feel great. but as soon as I got home I immediately took them off. boy those drugs they give you sure make you halucinate; hope you do get to go home; as they say there is no place like home. [TMIC] Tuesday am
Morning, I can not talk; my neck is so sore and hurts. Well made it thru surgery, had no clue it was going to hurt so much later. I have a drain tube coming out of my neck, once they check it they might let me go home today. Need lots of pain meds right now!! They have these compression wraps around my legs that squeeze and release my legs from ankles to thighs. To stop blood clots and let me tell you they feel great!! Its likes having leg messages now this is something I want to take home! They are going to set me up with some physical therapy; I have some weakness in my arms which I don't need with the wheel chair walker. Still working on 1 to 4 hours sleep so having a hard time with consternation and memory issues, I have to write everything down.. If all goes well I will be back to work Monday! And will have an income to pay for all of this Yippee So once I find out if I am going home I will pass the word on! Thanks again for all the encourgement and prayers I can really feel the support and friendship

Patti, You will do just fine. Just getting back to work will give you the energy to hang in there. I know exactly how you feel. I had to go back with a walker. It was a bit humiliating but God gives us what we need when we need it. So stay strong, remember you are never alone, God will always send you an angel to help you if you need it. I cannot open many of the heavy doors at school, clinics etc. but it seems that there's always some kind person ready to help me - some much older than I and some very surprising young angry looking kids that turn out to be angels.!!! At first my pride would not let me accept the help but I have learned it is good to give and to receive! Have wonderful day let us know how it goes! Re: [TMIC] Today Show
I was a guinea pig test of that exact device in the Physical Therapy section at the hospital where I go for my PT. I had no success at all with it. I was told that it was probably because the nerves in my legs that this device activates, were not functioning. The representative that was doing the demo even had the device cranked up all the way.., to the point that it felt like I had lightning shooting out of my toes, and I still had nothing. Two other people that they demo'd on had had strokes and they did have some success with the device. My neuro told me that the level of effectiveness with a device like this on a person with TM, is determined by where their lesion is and what nerves are affected by the TM. I guess I'm one of the lucky onesOh well.. RE: [TMIC] Today Show
Hi Trudy - I saw this show this morning - it's a WalkAide - I was fitted for one now it's up to my insurance - it costs about $5,000.00. It worked for me, but I won't be able to climb any mountains like she was. All it did was lift my toes, so I won't need my AFO brace any more. There is also an exercise mode where I can sit it will trigger every 4 seconds to build leg muscles. Re: [TMIC] Today Show
Trudy, I have a device similar to the one shown on the Today show. The one on the show is by Bioness. The one I am using is called a WalkAide. It is a different company and looks a bit different. My device if I had to purchase it would cost me $4500. However, I am in a 3 year Clinical Trial that is being run here in Alberta Canada. I only had to pay $500. For me it helps lift my toes and is strengthening my ankle. I have been using it since May of 2008. There is no way I could climb mountains etc but I can now walk much better and somewhat faster. I still use my cane when I am out and about even with this device. However, I am not as afraid of tripping anymore. The biggest thing I find is that my leg is definitely not as tired when I am walking. The clinic I go to now has only 9 people using it. There are actually 2 of us with TM using it. The others either have MS or have had a stroke. When I was first tested to see if I was a candidate they had to be able to find the peripheral nerve in the leg to see if there was still 'communication' between it and my lower leg. If that nerve connection is not there then you are not a good candidate. When I was tested last spring I was only the 3rd (at that time) out of 13 people they had tried the testing with. So not everyone can use it. In the beginning it felt like I was being stabbed by a darning needle every time the electrode stimulated my leg. I wondered what I had gotten myself into. However, after a couple of weeks we finally found the right spot and now it just feels like a sort of 'river of sensation' (the only way I can explain it) down my leg from the point of stimulation to the ankle. It does not hurt. The settings go from zero to 8. The best setting for me is at 4. Each person is different. I know that there are clinical trials for this device called the WalkAide in certain States in the USA. In Canada, Alberta is the only province at present who is trialing this device. I feel very fortunate to be part of the trial and very happy that I was able to use it. I no longer have that pain in my hip from 'hip-hiking' that required me to have cortizone shots every 6 months or so for the pain. I'm not sure if my ankle will be strengthened or 'trained' in 3 years but it would be lovely it that happens.
