Hi Rita
I'm a little north of you - in Mid Michigan. TM also struck me in the C4-C6
region. The cause is completely unknown - except for the stress I was under
while down-sizing a bank branch. I was the type to never show an ounce of
stress so I think I fizzled internally. My neuro didn't think it was stress
related, however, other than that disagreement I think he is great. The cold
weather is hard on me and causes a lot of pain. I'm looking forward to summer
- I'm not comfortable unless it is at least 72 degrees. I often sit with my
right hand wraped in a heating pad to keep it comfortable. I experience pain
in my back, torso and entire left leg and foot. My movement impairments are on
my right side.

The last two snow storms missed us by a few miles - it was odd to watch it on
the news yet look out the window to clear skies.

was and feeling week, I thought I would be better by weeks end and out
shopping for flowers for the yard. Needless to say but my yard did not get
any new plants last summer. On Tuesday the kids got picked up for school as
I could not drive. My symptoms began to worsen. I began to feel that sharp
pain in my neck and back. As I tried to reach in a cupboard for a cup my
right arm fell and hit me in the face and the pain worsened. I started to

my body just doesn't feel right. I still do have numbness on the right side

unit here to help it from deteriorating any further. I still get pain in my
neck and back and in October I began experiencing Lhermittes sign, and I do
get so tired still. I get a cold burning feeling in my arms and hands and
they aren't cold to the touch. If something cold touches my fore arms it
 feels like it burns.

Has anyone onset been from a virus? Another thing I experience that my

windy or cold and tense up almost as if to shiver, my legs stiffen up and I

Rita: welcome, welcome, Come right in and sit down at the (virtual) kitchen
table! We are a very special buncha folks. You are in great company.
I was paralyzed from about my bellybutton down. The area that was hit first
was the backs of my thighs/buttocks. But the burning is on my left lower
leg, about sock-top high, on the outside. I could not walk and though it
seems insignificant when listening to some of the others, I was only in
rehab about 3 weeks, released with an indwelling catheter, wheelchair,
walker, etc... After a year or so becoming wise via this group, I made an
appointment to see Dr. Kerr at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. On that initial
appointment, he came to the conclusion that my TM was actually
demyelination caused by B-12 deficiency. So, no viruses, and that was why
they never found any lesions or other markers in my spinal fluid. I have
about 5 years. Someone said my body just doesn't feel right That about
sums it up. Some lose hot/cold sensation, some cannot feel sharp, while
they can feel a light touch. Some are unable to sweat in the affected areas.
Those who have TM from a virus have a balancing act to maintain: don't boost
the immune system so much that you activate it to attack nerves again!--but
keep it intact and active so it protects you.

For a week before getting hit by TM I felt like I was fighting a cold or the

about TM. I also had a blister on the palm of my hand that was some what
infected. One of the doctors indicated he thought that could have been a
pathway to the imune system going hay wire. So over the years I got to thinking

I'm glad you got the BIG TIME snow and it missed us--this time--here in SW
Michigan.

Welcome to the TM club -many of your symptoms are familiar to me since my
onset four years ago.

About the virus subject you asked about. I was told that maybe a virus
brought my TM but I sure never had any symptoms of a virus before TM. I was
healthy and never took a sick day for years. I had several oral surgeries,
though, in the year or so prior toTM and wonder if that messed up my immune
system. I'll never know, I guess.

It was good to have you write.

I,too, have c4-c5 trouble caused by demyelination on the right side of my
spinal cord following a summer viral episode. My symptoms came on slowly over
two weeks.

I have severe central pain from my shoulders down, left foot drop...I could go
on. I'm so happy that I still get around with a cane, or on my hands and knees.

good luck

Lhermittes - not fun. My lesions are right about where yours are - C 4, 5 6.
I am just celebrating (nice word) my 6th TM anniversary. My yard doesn't see
as many flowers as it did years ago either. I get so excited every spring and
always have great expectations that I'm going to have bright flowers everywhere
- like I used to. I'm thinking positive this year that I will have lots of
flowers. I hope you will be able to experience the joy and satisfaction of a
bright sunny yard this year!

You didn't mention if you are on any meds. Are you taking
Neurontin/Gabapentin for the pain and to ease the burning hot/cold prickly

You asked about Another thing I experience that my neurologist thinks is

Forum that the weather has a tremendous amount to our residual effects of
the TM. Cold weather makes my legs stiffen up right away when I am out and
trying to walk. I don't walk much in the cold except from the car to a
store or restaurant etc. My legs just don't want to move then much at all.
We get lots of cold weather here in Calgary too but right now it is like
spring, sunny and warm. So going for a walk with my walker is okay right
now. Hot weather is better and the muscles seem much better then. I find
though that the hot weather can be draining at times too.

Glad you have been lurking and have now introduced yourself. Write to us
about anything at all as most have experienced all your residual effects,
some more or less. There is lots of good information found from everyone
here.

Subject: [TMIC] Another unidentified becomes identified!

My name is Rita. I am in snowy Cleveland, OH. I was diagnosed with TM
Memorial Day weekend 2007 at the C-4/C-5 region, apparently from a virus I
had 3 weeks prior. With some people introducing themselves I thought it
was time I did to. I have read your emails and received a lot of helpful
information. So, hello to all of you, some I feel as if I know, and Thank
You for the help you have given me over the past 10 months.

My onset of TM seemed sudden. The Friday of Memorial Day weekend I was
cutting a friends hair. I began having a sharp pain in my upper back.
Thought it was just a kink and tried to work it out. I them began to have
numbness in my left arm and them into my right. After dropping my comb a
couple time and when I could barely open and close the scissors I told my
friend something was wrong. Thank goodness I got the last snip in on her
hair. She took me to the hospital and by the that time I was having a hard
time opening my hands and was getting leg weakness. After 2 days in the
hospital and several x-rays and cat scans a neurologist order a MRI. By
Sunday he had diagnosed me with TM, checked my spinal fluids, which were
fine and I was sent home on Monday Memorial Day. Not quite sure what the
heck TM was and feeling week, I thought I would be better by weeks end and
out shopping for flowers for the yard. Needless to say but my yard did not
get any new plants last summer. On Tuesday the kids got picked up for
school as I could not drive. My symptoms began to worsen. I began to feel
that sharp pain in my neck and back. As I tried to reach in a cupboard for
a cup my right arm fell and hit me in the face and the pain worsened. I
started to panic when I tried to call my sister and my fingers couldn't push
the buttons. after numerous tries I got a hold of her. She came and called
the neurologist and he ordered steroids. I was very week. I remained out
of work until mid August.
My symptoms have improved greatly since and I am thankful for that.
However, my body just doesn't feel right. I still do have numbness on the
right side of abdomen, My right arm tricep still isn't doing good and I
have a stim unit here to help it from deteriorating any further. I still
get pain in my neck and back and in October I began experiencing Lhermittes
sign, and I do get so tired still. I get a cold burning feeling in my arms
and hands and they aren't cold to the touch. If something cold touches my
fore arms it feels like it burns.

Has anyone onset been from a virus? Another thing I experience that my
neurologist thinks is something other than TM is if I am out in and it is
windy or cold and tense up almost as if to shiver, my legs stiffen up and
I have a hard time walking. Has anyone experienced that?

There, I did it, I am now identified!

Re: [TMIC] Another unidentified becomes identified!

2008-03-08 Thread CANDIS KALLEY
Welcome Rita to this exclusive club. So sorry that the initiation is so high
but we all are VERY special people.
My TM wasn't happy with just one visit but decided it needed to make another
just 3 days after my first release from the hospital. My 2nd anniversary was
on Jan. 5 and Jan. 31 for the 2nd go around. The first go around only affected
me from the bra line down leaving me paralyzed. I fought back and went home
walking with a walker and a wheelchair for distances.
On my 2nd TM visit, I was completely paralyzed from the neck down. I was
affected at C4 - T1 and T10 - T12. After 7 PLEX in the hospital and 4 more as
outpatient, plus 6 months of PT and OT, I can walk with a cane short distances,
a walker for less than 100 ft. and use a scooter for longer outings.
I live by myself, doing all the basics for myself but need help with heavy
tasks, cleaning, laundry, yard work and such. I usually can only work or stand
at max for 15 to 20 min. before my body completely gives out. I am always
fatigued and constantly in pain especially the back. I spasms in my R leg and
hands whenever I'm stressed, cold, or tired. I have a corset feeling
occasionally and practically every morning or after sitting, or in one position
too long, my R leg likes to draw up to my chest.
It is very weird because my R leg is my weakest leg (I call it the Princess
because she likes to work when she wants to) but I do have spotty heat/cold
sensation but not pain. In my L leg (the Prince) which is my strongest, I have
no heat/cold nor pain feeling. I feel pressure under both my feet and in
both legs but can't tell what the pressure is. I also have the sunburn
sensation right above both knees. My L hand/arm tingles all the time and I have
difficulty moving my fingers. Thank God for my R hand/arm which came back with
all the sensations but both hands and arms do not have the strength that they
had before TM. A gallon of milk feels like I'm lifting a 50# bag.
I am also VERY cold intolerant causing very hard and violent spasms especially
in my R leg. My neuro also said it was very unusual because most TMers are
heat intolerant. Well, I guess we are the most special of the special ones. I
think that being cold or heat intolerant depends on where in the region and
depth the leison is on the spine.

Prayers and thoughts for you and yours,
Candy K.

Welcome to TMIC Rita.
One thing I retained from the time of onset is what you described about your
arm feeling cold but not to the touch, except I get it in my feet. There is
pain when I touch my left arm. One thing nobody has been able to explain is
the pain on my scalp ears. It takes me forever to find a comfortable
position to sleep. I am thankful tho because I couldn't bear to be touched
at all for about a year. Even my clothes hurt. Sure glad that improved -
I've got 10 grandkids to hug.

In answer to one of your questions, my TM onset followed a bad bout of flu.
