RE: Can you use Tomcat when you are not on line?

2005-04-08 Thread Vaneet Sharma
Hi wally,

Have u followed the steps properly

1) Check connector PORT number in SERVER.XML
2) if using windows... Create directory with following structure.

   C:\program files \ apache tomcat 5.something\webapps\Test

now in Test Directory, you should put files like this
Basically folders in Test directory like the following

  Test
- WEB-INF
-classes
- lib

In WEB-INF directory, u must put web.xml file as well.

3) include the context element in SERVER.XML like the following

 Host name=localhost debug=1 appBase=webapps unpackWARs=true
autoDeploy=true
Context path=
docBase=/usr/local/jakarta-tomcat-5.5.4/webapps/Test debug=10 /
 /Host

NOTE: Change the path to your path above for Test directory

Now write a small servlet saying hello and compile and copy in classes
directory
That's it

Thanks for responding. My IE is totally up to date. I have changed and
re-changed all the options for connecting and it does not seem to make
any difference. I cannot go to Firefox because the company does not want
to. So I will keep playing around and see what happens. It does not seem
to be a problem right now. Wally

This is just Internet Explorer being tempermental, as other posters
have suggested either just use Firefox -
http://getfirefox.comhttp://getfirefox.com/ or just
play around with checking and unchecking File / work Offline in
Internet Explorer in between page refreshes. Eventually it will work.

I think this was only a problem with older versions of IE though.

Thank you, I appreciate your reply. I didn't have a context entry so I
added a minimal one (copied from the /examples one) before proceeding
further as shown below.

Context path=/xxx docBase=xxx debug=0 reloadable=true
crossContext=true /

Unfortunately tomcat doesn't start now. I get a 'Document base
C:\Development\Java\jakarta-tomcat-4.1.31\webapps\xxx does not exist or
is not a readable directory'

So I added a direcory xxx. Now tomcat starts ok but it doesn't unpack
the xxx.war. Again I'm probably making some very simple mistake but
can't see the problem or an answer in the docs or by googling...

Are your servlets in the /servlet/ directory? Or some other name? You
have only redirected /servet/*, /*.vm and
/therestaurant/servlet/ControllerServlet/*

You may want to try just /therestaurant/*

And you may want to do this

JkMount / therestaurant /* loadbalancer

On my problem:
So I did some more investigation, and have found that I am
authenticating against one tomcat, and then being balanced over to the
other tomcat. This is presumably happening before the session is
replicated... still looking for a solution... perhaps synchronous

I have setup load balancing and clustering between two Tomcat 5.5.7
instances and Apache 2.0.50 with mod_jk. Almost everything works great.
I can fail back and forth between the 2 tomcat instances with no
trouble. However, I am having problems with the form based
authentication. I have an index.html file which redirects the user to a
secured resource. When the user hits this file through Apache, it works
like normal, directing them to the login page. However, when I attempt
to login I get Invalid direct reference to form login page. When I
look in the logs, I see the user is being authenticated, and the correct
roles are being found. If I continually try logging in, and hitting the
secure page, eventually I get in. Then, if I bounce apache, the problem
starts again. If I login in the exact same manner directly against one
of the tomcat instances, everything works, and I continue to the secure
resource. In addition, I have found that if I stop one tomcat instance,
I can login on the first try even when going through apache.

It's worth noting, once I get successfully logged in once through apache
(after many tries), I can logout/in repeatedly with no problem. Once I
bounce apache,

the problem starts again.

I think something strange is happening with the login stuff when tomcat
is clustered... Maybe I'm logging into 1 tomcat successfully, but being
load balanced over

to the other one, and the session has not been completely replicated
yet?

Any one else out there have this issue, or have any ideas?

I have done some further testing and have found what I think the problem
is, but I still do not know the solution. What is happening is that the
first time I access the webapp through httpd, I am getting the first
tomcat server. I then type in my username and password and hit submit.
I see in the logs of the first tomcat server log the authentication
happening successfully, however, I am then redirected to the second
tomcat server where my session is not available.

I am using a 'lb' type load balancer, and by default it has sticky
sessions, so I wonder why I am being balanced over to the other tomcat.
Is this, perhaps, a question for the mod_jk team? Is there such a
mailing list?

in the workers2.properties and everything up to this point makes sense.

I am also running multiple virtual hosts through Apache. I want to be
able to hit URLs such as dev.myserver.com or
www.myVirtualServer.com/contextname.
If I use a redirect in the Apache httpd file, I can redirect the
incoming request back to www.myserver.com/context, but this seems hocky.

How do I 'connect' alternate inbound URLs to a Tomcat context? What is
controlling the connection between www.myserver.com and Tomcat?

This is a great list and I really appreciate all the advice that I've
gleaned from it so far.

PS - Using Tomcat 5.5 and Apache 2.?

Subject: Authentication problems with tomcat clustering.

Thanks in advance!

I use tomcat 5.5 as main web server at Linux host. Me need run tomcat

port 80.

To solve this task I see two way:
1. Running tomcat as daemon in port 80 by jsvc command.
2. Running apache in port 80 and use mod_jk to redirect users request
to
tomcat.

What way is most secure?

Subject: One request per session

Hi,
i'm trying to test a locking system for servlets. I've made a chain of
servlets which include each other:

Servlet1 -- Servlet2 -- Servlet3

When Thread1 is in Servlet2, it puts a lock on Servlet1. That way if
there
is a new Request, this request (on thread2) wants to start with
servlet1.
Since there is a lock on it, it has to wait.
When Thread1 gets into servlet3 it releases the lock, and Tread2 can
start
with Servlet1.
This is what i've made already. (if there are any questions about this
already, please ask!)

Now I wanted to test it like this:
To test the lock, a thread in servlet2 sleeps for 20 seconds. So thread1

first executes servlet1, then goes to servlet2, waits for 20 seconds and

then goes on to servlet3. While thread1 is in servlet2 i have the time
to
start a new request.

Now what do I see: The first request starts with servlet1, then goes to
servlet2 and starts waiting 20 seconds. Now I push on the
'previous'-button
of my browser, and make a new request. This second thread must wait
since
servlet1 is locked. This works. But now the problem: when the first
thread
has waited 20 seconds, it doesn't go to servlet3 anymore.

-- Is there somekind of functionality that only one request per session

-- is
allowed or something like that?

Thanks!

RE: Apache Webserver with Tomcat 5.5.7

2005-03-22 Thread Vaneet Sharma

Dear Jc,
Thank you very much,

Please read below

SECTION A) configuration of httpd.conf

Well, if you go there: http://www.export4u.co.uk ( Apacher webserver is
running but it is not integrated with Tomcat. )

Java and Tomcat are already installed on the my machine

1) I have installed mod_jk.so ( I put into modules directory in
etc/httpd/modules/ ?Am I putting mod_jk.so in right directory ?

2) I have changed httpd.conf. ( I read httpd.conf many times. ( its
cool) , I included virtual host settings in the end )

Below is: configuration for httpd.conf

NameVirtualHost 213.217.226.168:80

VirtualHost 213.217.226.168:80
#ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
DocumentRoot /usr/local/jakarta-tomcat-5.5.7/webapps/XXX
ServerName www.export4u.co.uk
JkMount /servlet/* ajp13Worker
JkMount /therestaurant/* ajp13Worker
#ServerAlias export4u.co.uk
# ErrorLog /usr/local/jakarta-tomcat-5.5.7/logs
#CustomLog logs/dummy-host.example.com-access_log common
/VirtualHost

3) I also included this in httpd.conf

IfModule mod_jk.c
 JkWorkersFile /usr/local/jakarta-tomcat-5.5.7/conf/workers.properties
 JkLogFile /etc/httpd/logs/mod_jk.log
 JkLogLevel info
 JkOptions +ForwardKeySize +ForwardURICompat -ForwardDirectories
 JkLogStampFormat [%a %b %d %H:%M:%S %Y]
 JkMount /servlet/* ajp13Worker
 JkMount /restaurant/* ajp13Worker
/IfModule

4) added this to httpd.conf as well :

DocumentRoot /usr/local/jakarta-tomcat-5.5.7/webapps/MicsExport

5) Also included this line
LoadModule jk_module modules/mod_jk.so

6) Also added :)
Listen 213.217.226.168:80

SECTION B ) Coming to Tomcat now.

Now after doing all this:

I also changed workers.properties file in TOMCAT/conf

worker.ajp13Worker.port=8009
worker.ajp13Worker.host=www.export4u.co.uk
worker.ajp13Worker.type=ajp13
worker.ajp13Worker.lbfactor=50
worker.ajp13Worker.cachesize=10
worker.ajp13Worker.cache_timeout=600
worker.ajp13Worker.socket_keepalive=1
worker.ajp13Worker.socket_timeout=300

Also, I cannot configure Context in 5.5.7. According to documentation,
it says, put context in META-INF. Where is META-INF directory ? Shall I
create it?

Lastly , I have not changed the SERVER.XML file in tomcat.

Is my mod_jk.so file ok ??

I downloaded by following the links of connectors on Tomcat.

Thankx again.

Kind Regards

Vaneet

Hello guys,

I am not able to configure apache web server 2.something with apache
tomcat 5.5.7. I am running centos 3.3.
 I installed mod_jk.

 I also changed httpd.conf files..

Also server.xml file in tomcat / conf directory

 Can anyone help?

Can someone tell me an example of how to

Put a context element in TOMCAT 5.5.7 . In Tomcat 5.5.7, the context
element is in separate file.

I have two problems,

1) mod_jk is not connecting Apache Web Server with Tomcat 5.5.5
2) I think tomcat is not picking the context

Any hints?

 Kind Regards

I am about to update from Red Hat 7.3 to Red Hat Enterprise Server 3.
This a move from Linux 2.4 kernel to a 2.4/2.6 hybrid.

The Native Posix Threading Library (NPTL) is the biggest change there
seems to be, does this cause any problems with the 1.5 JVM?

Is anyone running Tomcat 5.0.28 with 1.5 JVM on Red Hat ES 3, are there
any configuration issues that I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance.

RE: servlet api question ?

2005-03-21 Thread Vaneet Sharma

Some of the reasons I know as a programmer is

Servlet API ( its an extension of j2SDK and part of of J2EE)

1) It take care of many hidden programming implementations like
connection to database, connection to remote hosts... Can be done with
one method calls,
While if u use SERVER API , then you have to write code to take care of
these small details

2) Servlet API is being used time and again and hence has track history.
Computer Science itself is not that old. With time, the software library
improves and becomes robust. Servlet library has reached that stage.
If you write your own code, you just cannot make it perfect in one
time. You need testing under different environments. However servlet as
FREE , is used by developers all over the world and hence tested all
over world.
Improvement of SERVLET API Is done by reports and bugs from
developers all over the world.
Bottom line: Whole open source community helps in development of SERVLET
API

3) SERVLET API is better than cgi model, you should read the
architecture of SERVLET.

4) j2EE is excellent framework. However, parts of framework has
succeeded in market. For e.g JMS, SERVLET API and etc.
EJB has however failed to succeed.

5) You should look at http://www.springframework.org ( it is really
cool) I think it is best j2EE framework.

Now, coming to IIS and other application servers, Servlet runs on
java containers, like tomcat, jrun

Go to http://www.apache.org
http://java.sun.com

http://www.google.com ( servlet tutorial)

Have fun reading.

However, the potential of JAVA comes on linux ~( I think )
Run Java on linux ( configure apache webserver with Tomcat ) and u can
see it runs COOL

Take care

Subject: servlet api question ?

What are the advantages or the reason for the popularity of
servlet api vis-a-vis the web server specific api ?

Say Netscape server or IIS server also have their own
specific api's as well where one could write server side
code. But the servlet api is so popular and wide spread and
one could argue that java sdk is free but then companies buy
the third party j2ee servers like websphere or weblogic. (why ?? what is
the real reason or advantages of servlet api

Vaneet,

There are a ton of open source projects at www.sourceforge.net. There is a
keyword search capably to find existing projects. Check the Development Status and
other project attributes to see if a project meets your objectives. Don't know if
there is a Document Management system, but you might find a framework or taglib that
will cover some of the pieces.

And of course Jakarta has many framework and components libraries for doing
various things.

I've used and use OpenJMS with tomcat all the time, including in

What are you looking for specifically? A document? Code that sends
messages to an OpenJMS queue/topic, received from an OpenJMS
queue/topic, all of the above?

I've actually gone from using tomcat's JNDI support to specifying the
JMS connection parameters in an app-specific configuration file and
creating the JMS objects myself. But I had it working via tomcat's

before as well.

Tomcat 4.1.29 Configuration Problem

2003-11-18 Thread Vaneet Sharma
Hi all,
I am having a problem in configurating tomcat.

  1) I made a web application under webapps called hSolutions.
2) In conf , directory , there are three - four server.xml files. I put the context
(hSolutions) in server-noexamples.xml.config
 3) I copied my servlet to
webapps/hSolutions/WEB-INF/classes/hLibManagSolutions/Hello.class
 4) In web.xml file i put :
 web-app
 servlet
servlet-name Hello /servlet-name
servlet-class hLibManagSystem.Hello /servlet-class
 /servlet
servlet-mapping
  servlet-nameHello/servlet-name
   url-pattern/Hello/url-pattern
/servlet-mapping

welcome-file-list
welcome-file
 html/Registration.html
/welcome-file
/welcome-file-list
Tomcat is finding the Registration.html but not the classes .
 It is giving 404 error.
I have had problems with tomcat before, but i think this new version
TOMCAT 4.1.29 (with a ROOT folder) has some different configuration settings.
Why doesnt jakarta, give a proper configuration example.
Please let me know. i have wasted a lot of time on configuration today
 Will appreciate your feedback

Avoid blank spaces in your element values just to be safe. Instead of this:

When you get the sig 11, does it always say the same shared lib or does

Are you using Tomcat as your web server, or do you have Apache (or
another web server) in front of it?

What is the URL that you are using to access the Hello servlet?

Hello All,

I was wondering where I can modify the initial heap size settings for

 Hi all,
nobody seemed to reply anything on this matter. Looking through
the code myself I came to some conclusions but actually the one(s)
who really know the code should take a look.

PLEASE, take another look at this problem. Actually, the Apache-Tomcat
integration is useless with such a problem (and there are no alternatives
if you want load balancing...). I know that others have reported similar
 issues.

 Any help???

 Thanks,
 Costas

  Hi Costin,
  continuing on the problem:

  1. I downloaded the latest code from CVS and compiled mod_jk.
  2. Run apache with it and used gdb to get a stack trace upon
the problem. Here is the gdb output:

  A debugging session is active.
Do you still want to close the debugger?(y or n) y
Detaching from program: , process 24550

The only way to stop the above is either by restarting apache or
killing the runaway apche process. gdb reports the same until I kill
the process (never gets out of that process).
Also, I must note that at the same time the jvm tomcat process also
consumes a lot of CPU untill I kill the httpd process.
Also, I use tomcat 4.0.3 with the compiled java mod_jk libs that
  come with the distribution.

I hope that you can give some feedback on the above.
Also, I think that the above problem is occurring when I press
the stop button on my browser while I have made a 'big' request (one
that brings back a 'big' html page).

  Any help is greatly welcome,
  Thanks,
  Costas

I have the same problem.
You can try to add :forwardAll=false noRoot=false in the
IIS listener of your context in server.xml
I've seen in tomcat doc this manip permits to redirect only Jspservlets
but it doesn't work for me.
Good luck!

1. If you intend to use custom error pages for errors that are generated by
tomcat (page not found for example), in the XML descriptor of the web
application you can add tags like this one:

  error-page
error-code404/error-code
locationErrorPage.jsp/location
  /error-page

2. If you want to send the user to a page (i.e. LoginError.jsp for example,
when your code detected that the user/pass combination is invalid), the
jsp:forward tag will do just fine.

Hello,

I asked this question earlier in the week and I didn't get any
responses...so, at the risk of being a little obnoxious, I'll ask
again

I'm using Tomcat v4.0.3 on Win2k.

I have a few JAR files that I would like to be accessible from
within *all* contexts on my web site. In other words, I do not
want to duplicate these JAR files in the WEB-INF/lib directory
for each and every context on my site.

The company that hosts my site, however, only allows me to access
the files in *my* domain so I do not have the luxury of putting
JAR files in, for example, jre/lib/ext where they would be
picked up by other peoples' domains.

I was hoping (I even said a couple prayers) there was a place in
my directory structure I could put these JARs so they would be
accessible to *all* servlets in *all* contexts on *my* site but
obviously not accessible to other domains.

Is this possible?

Thanks very much.

Tony LaPaso

Hi!
Does anybody know how to disable the content of a context listing?

I mean, when you try to load a JSP file you must type the following URL:

http://address:8080/contextname/file.jsp

But when you type http://address:8080/contextname all the list of jsp,
gif, jpg files are showed and even you can download the file thru the
right button of your mouse with (Save target as...)...

It would be right if instead of the listing, a Forbidden or Not
Found page appears, wouldn't it?
So, could you help me to disable this kind of access?
I'll appreciate all your advice!!!

Thank you in advance!
Nancy.

Sorry, I mean to say I do not invalidate the session myself but it is
invalidated by tomcat.
After the 5th step I send a request without the cookie so new session is
created on the server.

I myself is not managing the sesion but it just a simple check in service
method to avoid same sassion id to be allocated to two threads.
As the hashtable is a member of the servlet(my srvlet) I keep a record of
the ongoing sesions in this hashtable. As I am adding and removing the
sesions to this hashtable in the service method itself this ensures that for
N number of threads(concurrent) there should be always N different entries
in the hashtable. If the session id from any request thread is one already
present in the hashtable that means the servlet engine is allowing the same
session id to be used by two different threads at the same time.Because one
thread is already working on this session.

Hope u understand my english ...:-)

Did u get what i have to say??

Raj

try changing it so it doesn't invalidate the session. If the duplicate
sessions do not appear, you know the culprit. The thing about checking
the session id's yourself is it won't be reliable, unless you generate
your own unique ID and manage it. Otherwise, just let catalina manage
the session life cycle.

Unless the state of session life cycle on tomcat and your client app are
synchronized, the client is going to get duplicate session id's.

And the check which I apply in the service method is only in the service
method. I mean I add and remove the session Ids in the service method
itself.Just to check that the ongoing session id is not give to any other
 request thread.
So there should'nt be new thread started with the same session which is
 already in progress.!!

I have also posted this on the dev list. But not any answer yet.

 Thanxs,
 raj

Isn't Tomcat supposed to reload an application's web.xml by using
 /manager/stop /manager/start?

 I'm running Tomcat 4.01.
