Re: Topband: T Top Verticals and yagis

2020-02-27 Thread donovanf
Hi Ed,

Your conclusions based on your modelling are completely consistent
with my practical experience and modelling.

The most likely degradation is a T-top between 60 and 75 feet long
degrading the front-to-back ratio, pattern and gain of a 40 meter
Yagi when its main beam points into a T-top that's roughly parallel
to the 40 meter Yagi elements.

Only the 40 meter Yagi is affected, especially if the Yagi is within
about 400 feet of a 160 meter T-vertical with a 60-75 foot T-top.
The 160M T-vertical is not affected.

How to avoid degradation of a 40 meter Yagi?
- avoid T-tops between 50 and 75 feet long, or
- use an inverted-L rather then a T-vertical

All of the above is based on actual degradation of my 3 element 40M
Yagi by a 160M T-vertical 40 years ago. Changing the T-vertical to an
inverted-L returned the 40M Yagi to its prior excellent performance

tks

Subject: Topband: T Top Verticals and yagis

Frank had brought up the interaction of certain T top loading wires and the
possible interaction with yagis. I played around with modelling on this and
found that just as Frank said, there is interaction of T top wires and
yagis. One thing I found was that if the wire is in the front pattern of
the yagi it is much more influenced if the wire is the front 1/3 portion
rather than the sides and back of the yagi. I didn't find meaningful
distortion in the back area 200 ft away but closer than that and approaching
the front, and there was definite distortion.

Interesting topic Frank.

Topband: About AA0RS

2020-02-27 Thread Roger Kennedy

Dave was originally G3SZA . . . he lived just two miles from me when I first
was an SWL, aged 12.

He was already working DX on 160m back then (1967), as was another local/old
friend of mine, Mike G3SED. They both helped and inspired me, and are the
reason I became interested in DX-ing on 160m as soon as I got my full
licence 2 years later, when I was old enough (14).

Dave was so strong at my QTH back then that not only could I hear him
underneath myself (monitoring on my muted receiver), he even moved my SWR
bridge with the voltage he put in my antenna ! (thank goodness I had an
all-valve receiver that suffered no blocking or intermod problems)

He was a rising star with IBM here in Britain, and they persuaded him to
move to the USA. He later worked for (or ran?) Alpha Amplifiers before
retiring.

Dave really is a great guy, still passionate about Top Band . . his 160m
setup as AA0RS in Colorado is fantastic, and I have regularly worked him on
160m over the years from there.

Now and for the next six months, N/S paths are better than E/W paths in

 Roger,

Sorry I missed you. I think I was QRV when you were not. After some
quality time with the XYL, I got on about 0200 UT and went until sunrise
in Europe. Signals were certainly good, and I worked a few all time new
stations as well, so that was nice.

I listened for VP8PJ for quite awhile, but heard almost nothing. Then I
figured out that my South beverage is broken. It produces band noise,
but no signals. It's always something. Today is pouring rain, so I doubt
that i will fix it today.

I listened a bit on FT-8 at my sunset as well as CW, but nothing unusual
there. I could not hear HL5IVL nor any JA stations. Still, the path
between NA and EU was very good last night. Too bad it was so lightly
utilized. :<(

In 2009, Norm, N6JV, was operating from Sacramento county, the
same as me, except he was operating from a city lot in
those days, doing amazing things considering the
limitations. (He has since moved to acreage near me).
In 2009, the propagation spotlight favored our area
a number of times. That was around the time I worked
Russia on SSB, etc. That over the pole propagation returned
this winter for the first time since 2009. It seems to be
a different mechanism than Western EU.

Norm is certainly one of the top DX'ers in our local club
(Motherlode DX/Contest Club). We have another member
currently operating on the South Orkney DXpedition.
I have heard that one on 160 (CW!) for only 2 minutes so far,
unfortunately not long enough to warm up the amplifier.
Only a few locals here have worked it, and then just barely.
The low sunspots don't seem to have helped on 160, but they have
ensured that we can't work S. Orkney on 15 meters and up.
I needed VP8-O on 40 and 80, and those were fairly easy
QSO's.

I heard a ZL on CW last night but never got a callsign and then they
were gone.  Moved to FT8 and was able to work ZL4AS with a -18.  He was
hearing me much better.  Made some other CQ's and nothing.

KV0Q was on for the CQ 160 CW as was K0RF.  KV0Q is pretty close to me.
I think he did a single 80 for the ARRL CW.

From a pretty decent station (but nothing like those CO guys)
near San Francisco, the only way I can work EU on 160 is FT8. That's
changed over 10 years as a result of increased RX noise on both ends.
Those CW QSOs I made soon after moving here in 2006 I can no longer
