[SlimDevices: Touch] My Touch findings
I have recently purchased the Touch and I have connected it with coax digital out to my DAC connected via XLR to a preamp/amp combo. I previously used a Receiver and I think the Touch is an affordable improvement, no doubt about it. I also noticed an improvement when going from SB3 to Receiver(also using digital out). I have replaced the stock PSU of the Touch and the improvement was just as great as replacing the PSU for the Receiver and SB3. Before I used to decode my FLAC;s on the Squeezebox Server since it greatly improved the sound for both the Receiver and SB3. With the Touch there is very little difference, but at the moment I favor decoding the FLAC;s on the Touch. Decoding the FLAC;s on the Touch also improves performance of my rather slow NAS. I currently use Screen Off as screensaver for the Touch, but I think you will need to have a very high resolution system to hear this improvement. I remember favoring this setup with the SB3 as well. On the downside I failed to play my newly acquired high resolution album since it was a 24/192. I really hope there will be native support for 24/192 in the near future. I can not play back my album at all at the moment since my NAS is not powerful enough to transcode it in real time. -- holkoz holkoz's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16169 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78021 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Sending audio to USB DAC?
This gets a bit complicated. You need to do some reading on alsa config files. The one for the Touch is /etc/asound.conf. That file redefines default to be virtual card which sends the same stream to the S/PDIF and DAC devices. IF your USB DAC accepts 24 bit data all you really need to do to get music to play is rename the asound.conf file and it WILL go to the USB DAC. If the DAC only accepts 16 bit data you need to use the plug interface which will convert the 24 bit to 16 bit. This is done in the asound.conf file. If you really want a challange look up the documentation and figure out how to make a plug device from the default card and assign this to be the default. This is rather confusing, you have the USB DAC which has a card name of default, which you can use in the definition of a stream named default. If you don't do anything special these are the same, but you CAN separate them. The following should work: pcm.usb { type hw; card default } pcm.plugusb { type plug; slave.pcm usb } pcm.!default plugusb Note that if your USB DAC winds up with a card name other than default you will have to modify this. before making ANY changes please backup the original asound.conf: cd /etc mv asound.conf asound_orig.conf vi asound_usb.conf (edit the new file) cp asound_usb.conf asound.conf sync reboot Its easiest to just reboot at this point. That should do it. You should have music over the USB DAC. But NOT over the analog outs or S/PDIF. To figure out how to do THAT carefully study the existing asound.conf and add the USB DAC to the virtual card. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Sending audio to USB DAC?
Hi folks. I face difficulties to get my PCM2707 going. I tried all kind of stuff. Of course I got thousands more options - not now. I don't think it is that easy to combine a 16 and the 24 bit devices. (I tried plug etc.). Jive_alsa crashes all the time during startup. When starting it manually I can see the error codes. Some of the tests ended up so bad that the Touch died with a kernel crash. The only thing I managed to achieve so far is that I can run default config ( card 1 in asound.conf) at 24bit with my 16 bit DAC and Johns setup. But that generates clicks here and than. What a pity that the jife_alsa startup parameters seem to be hardcoded. It would make my life much easier if I could assign flexible parameters ( e.g. device and bitdepth) through a config file somewhere. Should be a No-brainer for the designers to implement something like that. ;) However: I managed quite easily to run aplay with data from SD-card on my USB DAC. Works flawless and sounds great - really good. I also had a problem to get my Opticis optical USB going. It usually comes up as a hub. My guess that's not manageable by the current embedded Linux - a combination of a hub and a snd device. In any case I consider it a must-do for the Logitech folks to implement that usb-audio support - at least to a certain extent. This lifts the Touch up into a different league. And opens up a complete new and huge target group. I 'd guess that the majority of PC-Audio people got USB DACs at home. I am not sure if they would switch to the Touch if they would have to switch to SPDIF. The implementation efforts will cost close to nothing for just making the driver available - my guess. However, Logitech could not guarantee device support beyond Alsa device support. That must be one of the key obstacles and reason not to go for it. In this case a community plugin would be needed. Logitech just would have to fulfill our little wishes, which will cost even less. John: You said you're working on a plugin. Do you think Logitech would be open to discuss little changes to set a proper base for such a plugin? The two issues from my point of view are card numbering to get rid of the rather random numbering and flexible configuration of jife_alsa start parameters to be able to change e.g. the device id as defined in asound.conf and bitdepth. Another nice-to-have feature would be that hub-support. And: The new Alsa usb-audio driver 1.0.22-B is lighyears ahead ( much wider device support, asynch USB, 192khz, better USB handling...) of the old stuff on the Touch. Hopefully one day we'll see a 2.6.33-rt and 1.0.22b Alsa on the device. I use the Touch with a USB drive almost daily running TinySC (no SBS PC Server) and listen to Internet Radio without any issues. The Touch USB Port is a USB Spec'd port. It meets the power requirements to power devices that meet the certified USB standard. Does this mean that all devices and all hard drives will work, it does not. What it does mean is that devices that display that they are certified to the USB Standard will have a higher likely hood of functioning correctly. And yes I have USB devices that aren't certified to the USB standard that DO work with the Touch and others that don't. I don't have a single USB certified device that doesn't work with the Touch. There are two options: 1. - Setup jstraw's repository posted earlier in this thread in your SBS installation - This will make them appear in Patch Installer - You will see the result when switching views in the Now Playing screen, it will not works as screen saver besides the possibility to setup Now Playing as screen saver. 2. - Install Custom Clock Helper in SBS - Install Custom Clock on Touch - Select Analog VU Meter in Custom Clock Settings on the Touch and configure it as screen saver and activate the screen saver - In SBS web ui, select Analog VU Meter in Custom Clock Helper settings, then change the url of the analogvumeter item to point to jstraw's png images. I'm not sure if the images are hosted somewhere yet so you might need to arrange that yourself. - The VU meters will only appear as screen savers, if you want them on the Now Playing screen you also have to perform the operation described under 1 above. jstraw, if you are seeing this and would like me to host some Custom Clock styles that uses your VU meter images, let me know and I'll arrange that. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Which tags?
Ok, so, using Erland's advice, I modified (via SSH) the bandInArtists, composerInArtists and conductorInArtists parameters in the server.prefs file of the Touch, and after restarting TinySC, I now have the Composers, Conductors and Bands in the Artist menu of the Touch. Great ! But when I try to navigate to a certain track via a Composer, the SBT freezes ! Here is an example : I select the Artist Franz Schubert, then I see all the albums containing tracks having Schubert as a Composer, but when I select one of these albums, the SBT does not respond (there is a waiting circle moving, which lasts forever). I tried to wipe and rescan my entire collection on my external device, but that didn't solve the problem. So it seems that the search by Artist when selecting Composers, Conductors or Bands is not correctly implemented when using TinySC. The workaround I found is to press the + key to have the contextual menu, and select the reading of the whole album, but that's not very satisfactory. Perhaps there is another parameter to set in the server.prefs file to correct this behaviour ? Any thoughts, folks ? -- rotho rotho's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33493 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77325 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Sending audio to USB DAC?
I have the patch for 22b already done. I just have to get it to Andy. I'll try that tonight. I think you are trying to hard. I had a 2706 DAC up and running last night with the asound.conf I posted. Do not try and restart jive_alsa or anything like that. Modify the asound.conf and reboot. The only problem you will run into is if the USB DAC is coming up as card 2 since that is hardcoded as the Wolfson DAC. If that is the case, try both hotplugging the DAC and having it plugged in at boot. Do an aplay -l in both configurations, at least one of them should have the USB DAC as something other than card 2. Note the card name in the configuration you want to use and put that in the asound.conf. If you need to hotplug then unplug the DAC, boot the Touch and then plug in the DAC, it should work. If you need to be plugged in at boot, plug the DAC in and reboot. There are some variables that give the default configuration of the jive_alsa processes. I have not looked carefully at them to figure out what can be controlled by what. It looked like there were some defaults set with the capability for an applet to modify them. I'll have to spend some time looking at that. The asound.conf method is the quick way to get something working. The device numbering is going to take some udev work, which I'm not good at. If any body knows udev and is willing to work on this I'll be glad to work with you on whats needed here. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Pseudo-bridge: Touch wired to computer, computer wireless to router
I don't know much about Mac computers, but as long as yours has an ethernet port in addition to the wireless connection, and as long as the Mac OS has the ability to share an internet connection, it should be possible. Googling internet connection sharing Mac gives some results that suggest that in the Mac operating system there is a Sharing Pane under System Preferences that allows you to enable sharing, and that you could set it to share From the Airport To Ethernet. That would more or less take care of step 2 in my description above, and maybe once that is done, getting the Touch connected would be similar to step 3. It might be worth playing around a bit. If the Mac doesn't provide DHCP with its Internet Connection sharing, you might have to enter the networking addresses yourself. It would probably be similar to this example using an xbox 360 http://macapper.com/2009/01/29/tutorial-mac-internet-sharing-with-xbox-360/ If you get it to work, maybe you could describe here how you did it.
