20 seconds or so. However, if I create a playlist of individual songs
it doesn’t happen. Before I revert back to 7.5.0 is this a known bug

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How large a music collection is too large for TinySC?

2010-06-01 Thread ntom

This really is an apples / oranges comparison, but one which logitech
have brought upon the product.

I use an ipod hate itunes. It's a portable device.

My Squeexbox Players are intended for quality, no high quality home
listening as priority one, then remaining players for convenience
sharing a central database of music.

They have always been a little 'techie' to set up. A long time ago I
gave up on wireless connection for example for serious listening...
just inherent problems with wi-fi not specifically squeezebox.

I would like a Touch. When I can find one... at a sensible price! For
wired ethernet listening and ability to stream hi-res tracks without
probs. It'll be a plug in replacement for a Classic.

So by comparison to an ipod it is for me a completely differnt beast.
Logitech could do much better at really making clear what this device
is for.

The poster who complains the SBTouch doesn't compare to an ipod
well just plug some cheap active speakers into your ipod be done?

Ever tried offline volume control - converting the file before it gets

How would I run my volume control on the server? Is there a variable in
convert.conf that I could apply to a Sox command or something like
that?

BTW:
On my own player I use a best-volume variable per album. On .wav and
.flac. The value is stored in a file of the directory of each album.
This way I don't have to do any volume control on the fly during

will be applied.
Pretty simple and effective.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Review

2010-06-01 Thread JohnSwenson

Its most likely was resizing a very large image file, this can take a
large amount of memory. To see more detail for a specific task you go
to:
settings-advanced-logging

This is a list of all the different tasks. For each you can choose a
level of logging that goes into the file. By default they are all set
to info which gives general info about what is happening, such as that
message about starting the artwork scan. There are other levels that
give more info. You can try setting it to warning and see what happens.
Debug gives the most info, but it can make a big file.

The fun part is figuring out which task to set to a higher level. I'm
not in front of my Touch right now so I can't tell you exactly which to
choose. See if there is something like image resizer, if not I'm sure
there is a generic squeezeboxserver one. There also might be a scanner
one as well.

With one of these you can probably track things down.

And that may be the reason right there. they may be growing tired

have no idea of future availability.

Or, as suggested, the web person incorrectly selected discontinued

Again, I'm just speculating like everyone else. :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Brightness Logic

2010-06-01 Thread Wizzu

After learning about the Factory Test - Ambient Light Sensor, I've
taken a look there, but for me I've seen the values stay at 0 when it's
dark in the room. No high numbers.

However the problem seems to have also disappeared. Only once now (in
fact the first time) did it happen so that I turned the room lights
off, and the Touch display remained bright. So I went to see what the
sensor values were, they were reading at 0, but then the Touch suddenly
turned dim. This was no gradual change like it normally does, but rather
a flip-of-a-switch kind of changing to very dim.

I have not seen that behaviour since. But also, my Touch seems to be
very obedient in relation to the ambient light level now.

My own speculation is that maybe the sensors don't get initialized
properly or the reading fails somehow, and going to the Factory Test /
Ambient Light Sensor initializes them properly so that the Touch works
correctly after that. Only this doesn't match what anyone else is
observing, at least from what I read here.

I should note that I tend to turn off the power from the device if I
don't need it, so it goes through frequent hard resets. The reason why
I do want it on at night time is to have the go-to-sleep and also the
alarm functionality.

I'll keep reporting my observations, if there's anything new.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Music collection scanning question - can scanning be disabled?

2010-06-01 Thread Kuja

Hi everybody,

I will get my SB Touch later today.

I got scared reading about problems with external USB drives and large
music collections.

Many people reported problems with long scans that never finish because
of server running out of memory, crashing/ending with some cryptic
messages.

I have all my files organized in folders by artist's/band's/albums
names.

I prefer to access my music just by browsing the music folder.

I do not use tags inside the files and I do not need album artwork on
that tiny screen.

Can I disable tags and artwork scanning in some advanced options
section?

Can I completely disable all scanning? Simple folder browsing is all
that I need.

Thanks in advance!

I'd recommend you start off with some of your music on a USB stick or an
SD card before jumping into the attached hard drive. My reasons are
purely functional. Get the feel of how the Touch works and especially
how it sounds. You can always move on to the HDD later. Setup is easy
and you wont be disappointed ... just so you don't get frustrated at an
early stage.

I really don't know if you can turn off the scanning function.

And for some reason you still refuse to accept that what the SBS/tinySC
is doing is NOTHING like what an iPod/Archos/etc is doing. SBS is a
multi-device server that has to manage synchronization and/or multiple
parallel streams across a TCP/IP network. What the iPod or any embedded
control programme for a dedicated hardware platform is doing is
(relatively) trivial - what SBS is doing is much more complex/demanding
- and it has to do it on multiple platforms/operating systems of
bewildering variety and over which it has no absolute control at all.

Apples and Oranges.

2010-06-01 Thread Kuja

Thanks for the fast answer!

I'm a long time SB3 user - I have the original Slimdevices version, not
Logitech.

I believe that I don't have to experience the SB experience first. :)

Main selling point for me was support for external USB drives, so that
PC is not needed anymore for simple FLAC playback.

I would like to be able to use my external USB drive, as it is
advertised in Logitech promo materials, without problems and
restrictios that were not mentioned in their promos. This would make me
think twice before ordering it.

And yes, I would like to have on my USB HDD more than 10 or 20
albums... :D

I don't need Facebook on it. :)

So if it is not there, I vote for option for disabling tags and artwork
scanning in next firmware/software version!

 http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77837

Its WAY WAY WAY more complex than that. There are hundreds (probably
thousands) of places in the code that access the database. If its not
there they are going to crash. It HAS to be there.

What is theoretically possible is a small database which only has say 1
song in it. As new songs are pointed at by the folder approach they
get added to the database (even if you use folder, accesses to the
database still happen). Unfortunately even this is not easy. I've been
trying to hack something together for a couple weeks and have been
constantly running into roadblocks at every turn. The system was just
not designed to do this. The dependence on the database is so pervasive
that any attempt at limiting it is turning out to be very difficult.

 windows home server installer

and which one should I use?

I think my artwork is separate from the music.

 Thanks

 Scott

appears you have a laptop running windows. So this would be windows
executable installer The windows home server installer is only if you
are running a windows home server. If you had one of these, you'd know
it. It is not a regular windows machine.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] I keep getting an error

2010-06-01 Thread mdaudioguy

Hi Scott! Welcome to the Squeezebox forum! I've run into this too. It
seems (at least to me) that iTunes artwork isn't compatible with
anything else, but... iTunes. I could be wrong, though. I usually end
up using a program like mp3tag, along with wikipedia searches, to add
album artwork, so that my iTunes-purchased music looks pretty on my
remote.

O yeah, I use the iPeng app on my iPhone to control my squeezebox
receivers. Dang, I hate Apple and all their iStuff. I'm looking forward
to adding a Touch soon. Other than the immediate issues, How you liking
it?

Ed

Edit: Oops, looks like you're having the opposite problem.

If your present server couldn't scan your files with 7.5 there's not
much chance that the server in the Touch would work. Before even
considering using the Touch server I would install 7.5 on your current
hardware and use the logs to figure out why it fails. Probably some
file name and/or tagging issue.

You need to embed the Artwork into the files.
Here's an Applescript that will do it (If you're on a Mac):

2010-06-01 Thread mdaudioguy

Crutchfield must have labeled it incorrectly. I got the email too. I'll
be ordering it in a few days. Hopefully their inventory will hold out.
:) Yeah, asking them might have been a good idea, but then again I was
just posting a fact. It seems to have been an anomaly.

Yeah, I figured it was you. Album art is a pet peeve of mine... Drives
me nuts sometimes. Different sizes, resolutions, etc... I especially
hate when the color is off.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Screen Burn In?

2010-06-01 Thread drewe181

Is there any possibility of screen burn in with the touch? I've been
running my touch constantly for around 3-6 hours a day some days and it
has just occurred to me that this might be an issue. I don't
particularly want the function controls burnt into the screen, nor the
date when using a date/time screen saver when the touch is off.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Scrambled Track Order in Playlists

2010-06-01 Thread Subarctic Audiophile

Lately, my SB Touch has been exhibiting an odd problem relating to how
both albums and tracks are added to the current playlist. Adding an
album in SB Server 7.5 results in a scrambled track order, and single
tracks added to an existing playlist are added randomly, not at the end
of the playlist. This also happens when using iPeng.

I also have a SB Classic which I run off the same server that has not
developed this issue. Tracks in added albums appear in the correct
order, and added tracks are placed at the end. This is a Touch-only
issue.

I've checked the settings for the Touch in the server, and everything
appears correct, i.e. nothing is set to operate randomly.

Any thoughts regarding this problem?
