I have never had the problem with tinysc pausing to load artwork (i
have 9000 flac files), does this only happen when you first start
playing or for each song. Is your artwork embedded?

This trick might work with the new Arcam RDac.

I don't get artwork with 7.5.1 either.

You could try the 7.6 beta.
I do get artwork with that and everything works nicely but you'll
probably be annoyed by the beta update reminders that happen every few
days.

If you use it you'll need to delete the squeezebox folders and rescan.

Not convinced about this. Marillion tracks on "Misplaced Childhood" 1 &

That's exactly how my mp3's are arranged and I still see no artwork

Maybe it could have something to do with embedded vs an actual .jpg

All my mp3's have embedded artwork.

OTOH, thirth party Classic PSs sometimes offer more power then the
standard PS.
I had a squeezepack (a far too expensive Russ Andrews PS for the
Classic)and when I switched to a Touch I kept that PS connected. It
worked with an USB powered HD rather good (though the sound was clearly
less good then with a wireless server). Then I tried the standard PS of
the Touch, and the Touch would not work with the HD anymore.
Conclusion: the squeezepack supplied more power then the standaard PS.

Do you already own one? If the answer is NO, stay away from USB DACs.
Use the Coax Digital out on the Touch!

If one just has to use a DAC with the Touch, use a DAC with Coax S/PDIF

With both Toslink and COAX S/PDIF output available on all late model

If you want to everything at the same time you probable *must* use the

Duras find is quite interesting can you use more power hungry drives
with an higher spec PSU ?
I don't want to rain on anyone's parade but you might burn up some tiny
circuit board traces instead ? Is it plausible that the 5v goes just
straight out to the USB port ? without any regulator in between ?

Btw you do void your warranty if you do things like this, you should be
prepared for some "learning by burning" otherwise use the stock psu.

I really do not understand what this campaign is all about. You talk
about all the evils of audio via USB, but you do not explain why. You
say you have tried the Ayre QB-9. Sounds like you had computer trouble
if the experience was that bad. I use Coax S/PDIF from Touch to my Tact
and it sounds as good as the Tact permits. The Touch analog out is
better, but a Music Streamer II+ connected to my PC's USB port sounds
even better. So what is wrong with wanting this sound quality via the
Touch??

Happens on change of album. All of my FLACs have embedded artwork, I
also have afolder.jpg in each album folder.

When the Touch has just started, I can get four or five changes without

[SlimDevices: Touch] Another Artwork fault

2010-09-20 Thread markant

Hi am running the latest squeezebox server software on a Windows Home
Server, connected to a touch running the latest official firmware.

All my music is in apple lossless format, with the artwork embedded by
either itunes or the "icoverart" programme.

Several of the albums just won't display the correct artwork, they seem
to default to the very first piece of artwork under the very first
artist (numerically speaking)

When you look at the music files on a pc, all the artwork is displaying
correctly.

I have deleted the local itunes cache, as well as the cache on the
squeezebox, ran cleanup and rescaned the entire library several times,
to no avail.

Any ideas?

And also why skipping while in the middle of a song can cause problems.
When going to the next song in a playlisy it is prefetched so there is
already data in the local buffer when the previous song ends, when you
push the skip button there is no prefetch, you have to sit and wait
while the server opens the file and sends a buffers worth of data to
the player.

What campaign, there is no campaign, but there is a question? Why buy

OGS;577869 Wrote:

That is not what the thread is about and anybody that knows about USB
DACs already knows all the drawbacks (and new efforts to get around
them) and if they don't they need only to check the Internet.

OGS;577869 Wrote:

Don't put words in my mouth or my posts for that matter. Where did I
say it was bad? With all the help I hope I have been to Forum Members,
I would think it more then obvious that I just might happen to already
know what I am doing when using digital files. I had no computer
problems or problems using the Ayre. What I did say was it doesn't make
any sense to me to use a USB DAC with a Squeezebox no matter how good it
is and how expensive it is when using the COAX Digital out on the Touch
will do a better job at way less expense. The Ayre sounded very good
for what it is and what it does, but again at $2500 and no design
specific USB digital output on the Touch, I am just asking why go that
route?

OGS;577869 Wrote:

Where is all this coming from? You yourself are using Digital COAX. As
to your setup, you like what you hear and that is all that counts. If
it sounds better to you then use it, but that doesn't mean its the most
nature, neutral, or bit perfect setup. And depending on what PC OS one
uses and whether one as disabled all the WIndows interference on the
handling of USB outputted files, things could be even worse.

COAX S/PDIF is not a perfect format but its way above any USB format.
If there were no major issues with USB DACs, Ayre would not bother
licensing Streamlength to improve their USB DAC's function!

Maybe its just me, but the only reason I can think of using a USB DAC
for is if one wants to stream directly from a PC via the USB port. Yes
it works and can be done. In my opinion, we are still miles away from
this being anything near optimal. Even if one is using the Ayre QB-9,
because again the Transporter for hundreds of dollars less is currently
a better solution IMHO.

What exactly is the problem?

Pressing the skip button will skip to the next song, which may or may
not be partially in the buffer. If the start isn't in the buffer then
you wait while it _begins_ to fill the buffer sufficiently to allow
playback. Skipping twice or more in quick succession guarantees that
you'll wait. Depends on your network speed, but on mine the wait is
never more than 1-2 seconds.

Is that what you're calling a problem?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch with USB Output? Anybody do it yet?

2010-09-20 Thread Andy8421

Iphone,

By using the flow control capabilities of USB, the clock in the DAC can
be completely isolated from the rest of the data delivery chain. In
principle, this would allow a local low jitter clock to be used in the
DAC instead of the compromise of using a clock derived from the S/PDIF
bitstream.

I would therefore challenge your statement that "COAX S/PDIF is not a
perfect format but its way above any USB format".

A properly implemented asynchronous USB link should have none of the
vices of S/PDIF, at the expense of greater complexity in hardware and
software.

I have read many of your post over the years and found them
constructive, insightful and indeed helpful. That is why I am puzzeled
at the current outbursts towards connecting audio devices via USB.
I can not see that the analog output stage of the Transporter is
anywhere near the QB-9's, but I have not heard any of then so couldn't
tell. What I do know is that a Touch and a Music Streamer II+ is only
$600 retail for both.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Wireless vs Ethernet. Any sound quality differences?

2010-09-20 Thread JohnSwenson

My understanding of this is that when skipping, the full large buffer is
not filled up all the way right at the beginning, primarily to cut down
on the time the user has to wait before music starts playing.
Unfortunately this also means that its possible for that small buffer
to run out of data before the next buffer gets filled up, thus causing
the infamous stuttering. This is more probable if 24/96 files are being
played or TinySBS is being used or if using a not so great Wifi
connection.

This also why I think you hear some people talking about things work
fine except for the first song out of a playlist. That first song
doesn't have a prefetch and is probably using the "short buffer" right
at the beginning, thus increasing the probability of getting a stutter.

Ah, right. Is this pre-buffering set to a fixed amount in the code, or
is it a pref somewhere? You're right, starting playback after
prebuffering 3 seconds of 24/96 FLAC on a marginal wireless network is
totally different than prebuffering 3 seconds of a 128 kbps Mp3 on a
100 Mbps wired network.

I know that in most streaming video players this is a configurable
setting, as setting it too low means you get the stuttering you speak
of. I don't know that I've seen such a setting for Squeezebox Server.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Parts express power supply

2010-09-20 Thread bigbwb

Hey guys,

I had been using a modified Parts Express power supply for my Touch and
no longer have a need for it. It was modified to output the proper 5v.

The PS was only used for a month or so and includes the original box,
all connections, and etc.

If anyone wants to buy it, $25 including S/H.

Thanks,
Brandon

All of my mp3s that are in a separate folder per album have embedded
artwork and a folder.jpg (which happens to be what's embedded) in the
album folder.

My single tracks bunched together in a folder is a mix. Some do, some
don't have embedded artwork. None of these show art on the Touch using
TinySBS.
