Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Image viewer crashes at third picture
> ok, got the logs! I wrote you an email. > Hope to hear from you soon!:) Ok, it's pretty clear it dies with an "out of memory" error. Interestingly it first kills the internal music server, while still showing images. Then, a few images later, it definitely runs out of memory. Did you edit your files, are are they as delivered by your camera? Would you mind sharing some of them with me? We know that depending on how your JPG files are saved, this can increase memory consumption a lot. Make sure you don't save them with "progressive loading" enabled. One more issue: you seem to have hundreds or thousands of images in one folder. Touch isn't handling this very well. Try reducing the number of files. -- Michael ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

His only issue is that most menus don't have icons and are only text, and he is only starting to read, and trying to decipher the menu items letter by letter is quite tedious for him. But now that he remember a few genre and artist, he can find them back trivially. He picked up the basics very quickly. Note that I have not taught him complex things like queuing two albums and the long press for context menus. The only plug-in I have installed is Pandora. I detailed my setup in this thread : http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82070&highlight=mastering There are in this thread a few trick that may help with memory, such as file system structure and tags. However, my number one suspect would be any plug-in/extensions installed on the Touch. Note that slow memory increase maybe normal if the Touch collect playlist, stats and favorites. You could purge the database and rescan (see thread above). And you could also try a complete factory reset. Good luck... [SlimDevices: Touch] Reducing Memory Usage
Hi, My current memory usage is 88%. The memory usage appears to be increasing overtime. This high usage is becoming a problem because I have some issues when connecting to internet radio. If the internet connection is bad for that particular radio station (possibly needing more resources to connect to the station) the internal squeezebox servers fails because of a lack of memory. Then I have to restart the squeezebox server. Is there a way to reduce memory usage and what are the steps? I am using the Tiny Internal Server and have 4000+ songs, probably 400+ albums and minimal downloads. But I do have cover art for almost all of my albums. I am buying the Touch for my kids. I realized my younger ones (4 & 5 yrs old) can't handle Classic too well via the remote. [SlimDevices: Touch] Will This Work?
I have recommended Touch for my brother-in-law and this is how he would like to us. I am streaming via my NAS in FLAc and all is great but not sure if his intension will. All of his music files are in MP3 and I has them all in a 2T Buffallo external drive that´s connected to his Mac. He intends to connect the SB touch to his hi-fi in his living room and plan to stream his music either through his wi-fi network or using homeplug if the speed of the signal from his wireless network is not fast enough. I beleive he is going to install the SB Server software on his Mac. Will this SB server software or the Touch able to read his external drive attached to his mac? I know attaching a 2 TB external hardrive directly to the Touch is probably going to take a very long time to scan. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] RSS news feeds as screensaver
Just for information to anyone interested in RSS as screen saver on Touch/Radio/Controller. The latest version of Custom Clock applet and Custom Clock Helper plugin now has support for a new rsstext item type in their configuration. There is also a "RSS Text Feed" and "Digital Clock with RSS" style for Touch which is currently configured to show a allmusic.com RSS feed. As usual, you can of course combine the rsstext item with any other items supported by Custom Clock to create your own customized screen saver. The new version also supports a "rssicon" item which does the same thing for image information in RSS feeds. The solution isn't optional for two reasons: 1. It doesn't work good with long scrolling texts, so the feeds needs to be fairly short if you want a continuously scrolling text. 2. There is no support in SqueezePlay for vertical scrolling items. The "RSS Text Feed" style shows and example that shows one RSS item using the complete screen area. The "Digital Clock with RSS" style shows an example which have a single horizontal scrolling item and switches to the next RSS item after 2 minutes. As usual you need the Custom Clock Helper plugin to configure the style to for example change to another RSS feed. -- erland Erland Isaksson ('My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info)) (Developer of 'many plugins/applets' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/User:Erland). Our September shipment of Touch players for the United States was supposed to arrive from the factory earlier this month but has been delayed. They're now on an airplane and should be entering the United States today (September 30, 2010). Hopefully they'll be sending out all backordered units to customers sometime next week. In the meantime, if you want one you should place an order now and they'll ship it out soon. Sorry for the confusion. And what would be the advantages of such a "Receiver-ized" Touch above the current Touch? Maybe marginally lower price because of no LCD screen, which is a very inexpensive component. There would marginal savings on the software side, because it's SqueezePlay underneath, just like the Controller. The Touch costs twice as much as the Receiver not primarily because of the touchscreen, but primarily because it has much better audio, as well as a real CPU, operating system, and RAM. And the disadvantage? You'd need a Controller or similar, or at least a PC with something like UDAP, to set it up. I've wondered the same thing based on product availability (or should I say, unavailability) posts here in the past number of months. It'd be a tragedy if you turn out to be right. But, the category has changed since the early days of Slim Devices. When I bought my first Squeezebox (it was a SB1), Roku was one of Slim Devices' closest competitors. Within a year or so, Roku saw the opportunity with internet-connected set top boxes for video and they've made quite a name for themselves in that space. Sadly, the audiophile community is tiny in comparison to the iPod-connected-to-a-powered-speaker-system community. Then there's Sonos. To my knowledge, none of their products support the bit rates supported by the SB Touch. Regardless, my perception is the typical Sonos user is less interested in audio quality (than many Squeezebox users) and more about the relative simplicity, elegance and aesthetics of the experience. I've never seen or used the SB Touch, but my main concern with it would be the fact that the eye candy and cool UI (i.e.: the touch screen) is remote to the listening position in a typical use case. To me, that really diminishes the value of the Touch concept in terms of usability. Would a detachable head (let's call it 2nd generation Duet) address the issue? It sure would but the elegance of iPeng (and similar products) must really discourage Logitech from investing in the development of such a product. I hope I'm wrong about all this, and I do regret not getting an SB Touch if I do end up being right. Support for those higher bit rates would justify all those studio master flac tracks I've bought from the likes of Linn. In my ideal world, Logitech (or someone) would take all the audio qualities of the SB Touch and repackage it a Receiver with greater reliability than the current Duet Receiver. Now one probably has to wait for a production run and a boat before getting one. -- iPhone *iPhone* Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, Vandersteen Speakers: Quatro Wood Mains, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Video: Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1, Vandersteen V2W Subwoofer Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: Squeezebox BOOM Bathroom: Squeezebox Radio Ford Thunderbird: Duet, Mac Mini Ford Expedition: SB Touch, USB drive iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82327 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Which Category Ethernet Cable?
Again, thank you all for a most informative discussion! So far, my wireless connection seems to work flawlessly and sounds excellent. This seems to suggest I should stick with it and thus avoid drilling into floors and walls -- unless problems with wireless crop up down the line. But if I ever go Ethernet, I now know which cat to get. (Meow!) [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch - in stock anytime soon?
I called Logitech and was told "I don't know". Anyone has any info? Or is Touch a goner? The C-media USB receivers are some of the worst ones ever made, their sole redeeming feature is that they are dirt cheap. No wonder you like the S/PDIF better. The existing implementations vary from very poor to very good. The best ones can easily outperform almost all S/PDIF receivers. Even a 2706 if done well (good local clock, proper decoupling, good regulator) can outperform a standard crystal S/PDIF receiver (also implemented well). Of course its limited to 16/48. There are much better implementations than the 2706. A proper asynch USB CAN be better than any adaptive, but it has to be done right. Not all are. For example the infamous Musiland 01 USD is actually not a very good implementation, there are some adaptive implementations which are better. Both the Musiland 01 USD and the M2Tech will NOT work with the Touch. They require a custom driver of which only Mac or Windows versions exist. The Touch runs linux on an ARM processor so the existing drivers will not work. You HAVE to use a device that will work with a generic driver, NOT its own custom driver. I'm not up on DSIX, I've seen two very different things on the net under that name, I'm not sure what you are referring to. One looks like a simple waveform reshaper and a transformer, the other has an oscillator and says something about a PLL, I have not been able to find any details about whats actually going on inside of this. I've written hundreds of pages on S/PDIF before, I'm not really up to that all over again. The upshot is that it is HIGHLY variable. Almost no devices actually really get the spec right so you are almost always dealing with a gamble as to what is going to work the best. In real life its all about which imperfection of transmitter matches the imperfections of the receiver the best. Which comes down to its impossible to make generalizations. Try a bunch of stuff and use the one that sounds the best. Just because something works best for someone else, its highly unlikely its going to be the best for you unless you have exactly the same gear. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Instructions for connecting USB DAC to Touch
I discovered this thread kindof late... To the V-DAC owners: I know the V-DAC quite well, have tweaked it alot, I even wrote my own firmware for it. Don't use its USB input if you have other options, better use coax or optical if coax gives you ground loop problems. The PCM2706 is used as USB->SPDIF converter, feeding one of the 4 inputs of the upsampler, the other inputs being the coax and optical plugs. So if you use USB, your chain is longer by that chip making S/PDIF from it again. The USB input chip is sub-par with the capabilities of the DAC, only capable of 16 bit and up to 48 kHz. To my only partial understanding, USB Adaptive mode is a pretty bad idea, introducing a lot of jitter. The host (normally the PC) sends data with its own pace, jittered like hell because e.g. it is chopped into USB packets. The poor device (USB DAC) has the tough job to recover a steady clock from that. This works far less well than recovering a SPDIF clock. Asynchronous mode is the current hype. In this case the *device* sets the clock, the host has to deliver with that speed. No need for the DAC to recover a clock at all, it can use a fixed internal ultraclock. Only by using this scheme a USB DAC can outperform SPDIF in terms of jitter.
