Hi John,

further up this thread you say that the Touch will switch to
asynchronous mode with for example the Ayre QB-9. Which Touch firmware
is needed to achieve this?

As an aside, I was having a problem with the mediasmart collector
finding the files, since I had them on an external hard drive to a PC.
I discovered that the server finds them more easily on the system hard
drive. It is possible that some of the albums actually resided in more
than one location. That may have resulted in a problem. The scan done
by squeezebox server would have found an album in more than one sub
folder on the ex495 music folder.

If you drill down into the tracks you can see the exact file location
that the SBS scanner found the files at.

As advised, change to FLAC first, as WAV tagging leaves a lot to be
desired.

If done properly, no, lossless is lossless.

With your volume issue, here is a quick (albeit unscientific) test:
With Touch volume set at 100%, try playing a high quality Internet
Radio feed, see if there is a big difference in volume between your
ripped music and the internet stream.
Set your amp/receiver volume very low to begin with.
Search for AVRO or ETN or RealDJ on your Touch for a decent quality
high bitrate stream for comparison.

As Mnyb suggests, if you are going to be switching between SBS and
MySB.com, add switch to MySB.com to your Home Menu.
Touch Settings Home Menu switch to MySB.com

SBS will do anything and everything MySB.com can do, plus much more.
There is no actual need to switch between the two, unless you want to
turn off the computer hosting SBS server.

I know how you feel. I too bought the NV+ to retire my Windows based
file server. I was pretty p**d to find out that the NV+ isn’t running
well with SBS.
The good thing is that your DUO is quite new so you can sell it without
too much loss.

Hammering Netgear won’t do much good. Technically they didn’t say
anything wrong. SBS does run on the DUO (and other Sparc based
processors). They just didn’t tell anyone that it runs kinda slow.

I was able to figure out how to set pre-sets also (there was a posting a

steps). However, the problem I've encountered is that the pre-sets
don't stick. In other words, I set them up, I test them out right
after to make sure they work. But then, I go and play some music from
my SB server, or I play a Pandora radio station, or some other type of
activity. The next day, I go to play the pre-set and none of them work
anymore.

Anyone have any pointers?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch with USB drive : mastering TinySB

2010-11-29 Thread aubuti

The Touch's OS is Linux, but it certainly is not a regular Linux
distribution. It is customized for the Touch's limited hardware and
specialized purpose of serving music. I haven't followed the details
closely, but I am pretty sure you would first have to install (and
possibly build) the client software for accessing the network drive
onto the Touch. Then you would need to configure it so that the music
library's SQL database is stored on an SD card or USB drive inserted in
the Touch, because you definitely don't want all the traffic to/from the
db going over the network for performance reasons.

Search these forums and you will find at least one example of someone
who managed to mount an external drive on TinySBS via NFS. As I recall
it wasn't easy (your main question), and it wasn't clear that
performance was satisfactory.

Yup. In fact, your SBS server is now setup. Just connect Touch to
your network, point Touch to your server, you are done. Assuming you
plan on using SBS server on your computer.
Other option is to just plug the USB drive into the Touch, no computer

[SlimDevices: Touch] gave up with tinySBS but got improved sound

2010-11-29 Thread atchi123

After months of persevering and tweaking, I have given up on the tinySBS
after seeing...Local Server has encountered a problem and needs to shut
down for the 500th time :( So took my hard drive back up to my pc and
sat down to listenclear, demonstrable difference in the sound
quality. Seems as though the attached drive adds quite a bit of noise
into the system and/or the extra processing was degrading the sound.
Overall highly dissapointed with Logitech for the tinySBS debacle but
the damn thing sounds very good when run like a traditional SBox.
