Per definition, each S/PDIF sampleslice is zero-padded to fit in 20 or 24 bits. If no channel status is sent, 48 kHz/20 bits is to be assumed according to the standard. Having said that, there are alternative ways for an S/PDIF receiver to determine the sample size (not fool-proof, but in reality it usually works). First, if there is channel status available, it should contain a category code. That category code is set to 0 for a general format, it is set to 1 for CD, set to 2 for PCM or set to 3 for DAT. This information could be used to discriminate between 16 and non-16 bit. Alternatively, the receiver could look at the incoming datastream and check for the number of least significant bits that are always set to 0 whilst the other bits do contain data. Most probably, if a receiver reports 23 bit, it got data with the only its LSB always set to 0 for some reason. In conclusion, AFAIK, there is no 100% reliable way to communicate the samplesize through S/PDIF. -- Griffin Griffin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=41449 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84280 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Not only are the mods you've so kindly prepared for us super easy to apply (even for a non-technical person such as myself), but much more importantly, the end result is absolutely staggering. I simply couldn't believe my ears last night after the Touch did its last reboot, and and played a few of my favorite tunes. There's now just so much more of EVERYTHING! More sound, more music, more air, more soundstage, more presence, and overall, more relaxed, less nervous sound. Keep in mind that, due to the severe constraints in my current layout (I live in a very old house and hence cannot easily rearrange the wiring), I wasn't able to implement the disabling of the WLAN mod. I am planning to do that as soon as possible. Even so, the changes that all the other mods have cumulatively done to the transport are breathtaking, to say the least. I can only hope that, once I disable the wireless and go with the ethernet, as you strongly recommend, I will stand to reap even more benefits. Once again, thanks a million for giving us the ability to achieve such staggering improvements in the sound quality. -- magiccarpetride magiccarpetride's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37863 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84742 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] External USB memory - how?
The problem is that the Touch is NOT windows based, its linux based. A fair number of sticks include windows specific code which gets executed when you plug the stick into a windows computer. These will NOT work on a Touch. The things to look out for are anything which mentions special features such as security, passwords etc. This guarantees it uses windows specific code to access the stick. Any hint of special features means it probably will not work with the Touch. A lot of SanDisk sticks have special features. I've had much better luck with Kingston sticks. The secret is to go online and look at the specific model you are interested in and see if its compatible with linux, not just windows. Even though Kingston includes some special features with many of their sticks, they have specifically designed them so they will still work with linux. I have a several of these Kingston drives and they work great with the Touch. John S. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] ayre QB9 + touch USB
Some people have run a QB-9 with the Touch without any problems at all. So there has to be something DAC specific, Touch hardware specific or configuration specific. What I would like people to try is different sample rates say 44.1 VS 48 or 88.2 and 96. That should wind up exercising different crystals in the DAC. With a USB interface the rate data is sent to the DAC is NOT determined by the audio crystals but by the processor crystal which may not be given as much care in initial frequency accuracy. The result is that the data rate might be fairly far off from what it should be and the feedback loop in the asynchronous interface may not have enough time to get the computer sending the data at the right rate before the buffer over/under flows. I've been working with some others with async hardware and seeing some very strange things happening. The feedback loop IS working but sometimes the data rate gets set to something very bizarre. Unfortunately I can't get any of this to happen on my Touch so its hard to debug. Sandisk Flash drive come with allsorts of rubbish on them (back up stuff), often divided into partitions on the drive which are generally great for most people. They do however do a program free on their website that allows you to do a full format, merge these partitions and get rid of their proprietry programs. I use a Sandisk Flash drive that works just fine with my Touch once you can see the drive to it's full extent. Many modern Flash drives only show a very small partition to run their software to access the full lot and this is what you need to remove. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 2.0
Cool, I just compared my old SB 3 (synced) to the modded SQ Touch on my SuperNait. Because there is almost no delay switching back and forward (the supernait DAC takes about a second switching digital inputs), it was quite easy to compare. When I originally compared the touch to the SB3 after purchasing, it was extremely difficult to tell the difference. (mayby this is caused by the reclocking feature in the Supernait DAC) I compared the Touch with both the mod enabled and disabled to the SB 3. Guys... this is the real deal. Doing A/B comparisons between the unmodded Touch and SB3 ... they were very similar, like expected. Comparing the modded Touch to the SB3 is a revelation. The difference is large enough to make a blind A/B test absolute and a waste of my time. Clearly more detail in all frequencies (not only the treble as I originally thought). The result is: More AIR / Ambiance / Better positioning-separation of instruments / 3D rendering of the soundstage / realism. Highs do have more “impact/dynamics”, which is very welcome with the 'darker' sound of both my Supernait and Harbeth Super HL5. Textures are much better, especially with classical instruments. The considerable level of added resolution has the additional advantage that you get more musical impact at lower volume. What is so cool about this, before the mod I always felt I was missing out on something. I truly considered changing my set-up. Mayby go back to Nait 5i (that is where my NAIM love started), downgrade to Nait XS, mayby nDac would fix things. Or even change speakers (was considering PMC Fact.8). I thought I hit the limits of my system after the high-cap upgrade (which is undoubtely a fantastic upgrade), and especially that the resolution of the Harbeth's could not be bettered. Interestingly, I was also sceptical about the impact of jitter. I was so wrong in so many ways. I am sure I will get upgradetites some day, but for now, I can rediscover my SuperNait+Harbeth combo. I never tested it, but I can easily imagine that the improvement on the analog outputs is real. However, that the difference would be so obvious on the Supernait truly surprised me, especially because its DAC supposed to re-clock the bit stream. Klaus wrote the mod, and deserves a lot of credit. It is simple to implement if you follow his instructions carefully. I will donate a modest fee for his cause, he surely deserves it -- Flextreme Flextreme's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=42996 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84742 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
