Guys.

Don't panic! Calm down.

There is no rush to run into wild network reconfigurations. The
majority is running Windows anyhow, and those Linux based NASes seem to
perform as well as Windows.

For now we're talking about a minority of Linux folks or better Ubuntu
folks in particular.

Fact is that different systems and system configurations do seem to
have an impact.

Now it's the task to figure out what's causing it.

Stretch your legs for now.

Enjoy.

Has network statistics been examined ?

Has anybody counted the number of data packets being sent ? Does it
change between different settings ? It's possible that there is a TCP
segmentation issue and packets are segmented differently according to
different settings.

Has error / retrans counts on router, server and Touch been checked to
see whether one if the system is having more problems (e.g. being
overloaded) with one settings compared to the other.

Since many Linux system have a common source for the Ethernet driver
which is different to Windows - the issue could be in the driver.

Wireshark could be used to compare network streams to see whether the
settings change affects the contents of the packets or the dynamics of
the packet stream.

Can the Windows TCP registry settings be changed to match the bad
settings to see if SQ of Windows server can be downgraded.

erm...dunno.
Half-duplex introduces collision detection - and lowers bandwidth.

I'm not sure we can have a logical discussion about this.

IF there is an effect, it is RFI/noise getting into the Touch via
ethernet cable. Nothing to do with TCP/IP or any of the logical OSI
layers per se.

However, of course the noise profile is subject to change according to
what is being sent electrically up/down the ethernet cable. I'm not
convinced this has anything to do with operating systems.

The first thing I would do is use CAT5 (unshielded) cable between
server-router and router-Touch to avoid RF bridging. Ferrite clamps at
both ends are also worth investigating.

Or use wi-fi!!!

Klaus, and anyone else who suspects that network comms are affecting SQ

I think it was Phil who offered a simple test. Pull the ethernet cable
out of the back of your Touch while it is playing a track. By
definition, all network comms will stop at that moment, but the Touch
will have around 40s of audio buffered internally (if you're streaming
FLAC, presumably less if streaming WAV, more if streaming lossy
compressed data), so you'll hear nothing but unadulterated playback of
buffered audio.

If pulling out the cable isn't practical for you, just wait until the
track reaches 40s from the end, at which point the buffer will stop
filling for about 30s (ie 10s before the start of the next track). I
guess that if you've only queued a single track, then even that final
10s will be free of network traffic too. (NB these are the
characteristics that I've observed on a Mac - it would be good to get
similar simple observations from servers on other operating systems)

This is surely a way for Klaus to gather wider feedback, since anybody
can do this, and he won't be limited to just those people with two
operating systems running. I suspect that the same 40s quiet period
exists in wireless setups too (I'll check later), so the last 40s of a
track would be a nice place to test the effect of wireless comms.

So come on folks - let's help Klaus out here. What differences do you
all notice during these golden 40s periods?

I think the sound will be always better when SBS is accessing the

boils up while running back and forth pulling cables to catch the
effective slot of 10s.

I already hear the sharks commenting on non-compliant ABX testing.

Then I don't even know what kind of routines will start up on the OS

Good luck to those who gonna give it a try.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] I need to buy a Squeezebox Touch

Do they have an existing audio system to plug a squeezebox touch into?
If not, you might consider the Squeezebox Boom or Squeezebox Radio,
which are standalone units and may be better suited for your
application. The Boom is stereo but has a monochrome display; the
Radio is mono, less power than the Boom, but has a color LCD screen.

You can purchase directly from Logitech. You can also order from
Amazon and usually get a discount from list price.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Home screen Squeezebox Touch : nil ?????

2011-02-04 Thread wowo

Since a couple of days the top of the home screen (- Now playing; - My

I do not known what nil means and I thought that it should be display

I have disabled and restarted the Squeezebox Server and have reset the

helped.

Has anyone an solution?

I have no idea how tech-savvy your folks are, but at the risk of
sounding age-ist I think that unless they have an existing audio
system that they already use regularly, a Boom or a Radio may be a
better solution. The buttons-and-knobs interfaces are likely to be more
familiar, and more forgiving, than the touchscreen. And if the main
intent is to listen to radio stations from back home then the six
physical preset buttons are a _huge_ convenience.

[SlimDevices: Touch] upgrading USB cable (or power supply)?

2011-02-04 Thread Howard Turkster

I finally have an external hard drive hooked directly into my Touch
working properly. I am using analog outs on the Touch into a Rega Mira
3 integrated amp.

I have very nice interconnects that I like between the Touch and the
amp, so my question is now if I would gain any value upgrading the USB
cable?

I'm not looking at anything silly. Just like $15-$20 for a very solid,
well-made one, or there is a hand made one on Audiogon for like $49.

Any thought to whether this would benefit my setup?

Also is there any final verdict on whether upgrading the power supply
has any benefit? (if so are there any cheap solutions for under $100?)

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Feature I want - Video Play

2011-02-04 Thread mbg

Not completely sure, but you may be able to use the transcoding support
(i.e. convert.conf, custom-convert.conf) along with the appropriate
transcoding binary to play the audio stream of a video file.

You'd just need to find a tool that would take the video file as input
and output only the audio stream in a supported format.

I suggest you try it for yourself and see if you hear a difference and
then decide if any difference you may or may not hear justifies the
price of admission. Asking for opinions here about upgrading cables
will typically end up with people who've never tried them telling you
they're not worth it. Personally, I don't think high end USB cables are

Thanks. Yeah, I might just try out the $20 ones I've seen and see how
that works.

Going from streaming wirelessly to the hard drive/usb method I think
has upgraded sound quality noticeably. So after that I thought I'd try
to firm up any other weak spots in the setup. The crappy stock usb from
the hard drive to the Touch seemed like a natural area to scrutinize.
But I know nothing about engineering or DIY audio and so have not the
faintest idea if this is a silly inquiry, due to the nature of USB data
transfer, etc., or not.

 but looking at the
manual, I saw that 'all digital audio jacks' (including, I would think,
the TV and Digital optical and digital connections) are compatible
with 32, 44.1, 48, and 96kHz sampling frequencies.

It also says to input multichannel digital audio from the DVD player,
set the digital audio output setting on the DVD player.

This sounds like it can accept MC digital audio on these jacks as
well.

It seems worth a try, just take an RCA interconnect cable, hook up the
RCA digital connections, and see what happens. Maybe start with the
sound turned down a bit, in case some noise comes out. If things aren't
compatible, hashy/white noise can be generated (I have heard this noise
when trying to play a 24 bit 176.4kHz FLAC file).

Dad's reasonably tech savvy and he'll show Mom. Dad's built tube amps,
preamps and speakers, many of his own design, for 60 years or so. He's
not bad on the computer, though age is a factor.

Both my brother and I have Squeeze products, so he's familiar with them
and doesn't want / need a Boom or a Radio - I suggested both as others
have recommended. Instead, he's setup a small amp and preamp and plans
to connect the Squeezebox Touch to them.

I saw where both Logitech and Amazon are selling the Touch, but only at
full pop ($300 - yesterday's price), which seems steep. They were on
sale for $170 or $180 last August. If I'd only known then what I know
now.

Are there any offers that I can take advantage of out there, or a

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Wrong time showing on Touch?

2011-02-04 Thread JohnSwenson

The Touch has two clocks, a realtime clock in hardware and the system
clock in software. When you display the time you are using the system
clock, which works from an interrupt using the regular processor clock.
Its not particularly good, it drifts around etc. The RTC keeps much
better time but the get time etc calls don't look at it.
Unfortunately its also not battery backed up so it forgets the time
when the Touch is unplugged.

If you are running completely standalone with no connection to the
outside world your best bet is to leave the Touch running all the time
and periodically sync the system clock to the RTC. There is a linux
command to do this. You can also use a linux command to set the system
clock and then sync the RTC to the system clock, from then on sync the
system clock to the RTC. When this gets too far off you can manually
set the time again.

If you are running the internal server BUT have an internet connection
then its just a matter of connecting to an external server every so
often (either your own SBS or mysb.com)

It should theoretically be possible to have the Touch itself sync to an
NTP server, but I'm not sure if anyone has got that working.

Even with different embedded images, it will use the image from track 1

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch + Controller without running server?

2011-02-04 Thread Ravenik

I have Squeezebox Duet and I would like to buy Squeezebox Touch. I have
a question if I will be able to control Squeezebox Touch with
Controller without running Squeezebox Server? I just would like to use
Controller to browse USB library connected to S.Touch and all without
any PC computer running. Is it possible?

BTW. Is it correct that S.Touch can play .flac files from USB (for
example from pendrive)? I mean .flac files dumped from CDs using Exact
Audio Copy?

I never said that. I said that if I'm enjoying something, and my peers
are applying peer pressure to try and convince me that I'm not actually
enjoying it, that if I succumb to their pressure I'd be suffering from
low self-esteem.

However, if I hear from someone that there is something nice to be had
over there, of course I'm going to become interested. That's not
suffering from low self-esteem.

For example, I was pretty pleased with my Touch, because I could hear
vast improvements in the sound quality over my Duet. All fine and
dandy. Then, one day, I learn about Soundcheck's mods, and how he and
some other people are raving about the improvements. Add to that the
fact that it costs nothing to try, and before you know it, I ended up
also doing the mods.

And guess what? They work miracles for my system! The sound is much
better, more revealing, I'm hearing oodles of beautiful musical details
that become hidden again the moment I undo the mods.

That much is clear.

Now, there are tight chested naysayers who, out of stupidity of
jealousy or envy, or just out of the fucked up inner need to be
contrarians, insist that I'm full of shit for claiming that I hear
improvements after applying Soundcheck's mods.

To these tight chested people I say a very loud and clear fuck you!.

That's high self-esteem for ya!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Wrong time showing on Touch?

2011-02-04 Thread bojo60

Well, I just succeeded in automatically adjusting the time in my Touch.
Here is how you do it:
Log in to your sb as root
Create required directories for crontab

# mkdir -p /var/spool/cron/crontabs

# crontab -e

and add the next line:

0 * * * * /usr/sbin/msntp -r pool.ntp.org /tmp/output 21

This will run the command every hour, on the hour and errors will be
appended to the file /tmp/output

(if you never used the vi editor then here is a short manual:
Letter i will start insert mode, then paste the crontab line.
The ESC button will get you back to command mode and ZZ will save and
exit.)

Fairly certain yes. I press volume-up and keep it pressed, it shows the

pressed. When it boots up I see the Free your music screen and it
takes me to the main menu and shows the volume bar again.
Maybe I point it away from the Touch when I bend forward to press the
reset button. Will try again.

Mmmm I bought my Touch recently, and never could make it show any
embedded cover even though all my mp3 files have a correct embedded
300x300 cover, which shows perfectly in Winamp, WMP, TagRename and on
my Nokia phone. I finally came to the solution of having a folder.jpg
file in all my album folders, which is ok with me even though I find
 it's a shame...

It never worked for me as well, but from researching on the boards I
found out it used to work (up until 7.5.1 IIRC).

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch + Controller without running server?

2011-02-04 Thread JohnSwenson

Yes you can use a duet controller to control the Touch, it doesn't
matter where the server is, internal, external or mysb.com.

You DO need a wireless router up and running though. Both the Touch and
controller are wifi clients, they need an access point to mediate
between them. Even if you have the wireless on the Touch turned on it
won't talk directly to the controller.

The duet had a mode where it would talk to a controller without a
wireless router, but the Touch does not have this.

[SlimDevices: Touch] connected my Touch to SBS via ethernet for the first time (wow!)

2011-02-04 Thread Howard Turkster

I posted a thread this morning about connecting a HDD directly to the
Touch and preferring its sound to streaming it wirelessly. Even went
so far as to consider 'upggrading' the usb cable :)

Well I figured before I do that I should figure how this thing sounds
hooked up via ethernet to a computer running the SBS. Had never tried
this because my home computer is on a different level of the house and
hadn't been imaginiative enough to consider cheap server possibilities.

Anyway, I put a good amount of music on my wife's netbook, installed
SBS, and plugged it in via ethernet. And WOW!

I don't think I'll be going back to running TinySB or to streaming
wirelessly ever again if I can help it.

I have run my system before on a Rega Apollo cd player and other Rotel
players and frankly I think this is the best it has ever sounded.

Only problem is I can't use my wife's netbook forever. What cheap
solutions are out there for me.

Would this work?

Yes, with 2 caveats:

1) It needs more memory - probably 1 GB. Since it has 4 memory slots,
so that will cost another $30 or so.

2) The Vostro is a business machine and may have a relatively noisy fan
- so you should have a backup plan to put it outside the listening room

If you want to run XP instead of the VortexBox image, I suspect it

Remember that you can run very long ethernet cables trouble free.
A typical setup is ethernet to the router from Touch and then also
ethernet cable from the server to the router, server can be tucked away
anywhere.

Remember that squeezeboxserver web-ui is avaible to all computers on
your local network, not only on the computer it is running on. The Hd
with the music can be mounted as a network share also remotely avaible
whatever you run as server does not to have monitor or keyboard other
than during the initial setup.

So thats a popular solution here :) turn any old clunker into a server
and put it into the basement.
There is 1000 ways to do it, so investigate some more

Not done it myself, I went the drilling holes and climbing ladders
route but others have reported that it's just as good as standard
ethernet. Some will disagree of course as is the nature of anything
audio. One thing is for sure, it's a hell of a lot more reliable than
wireless.

Best to have a look around the forum and research it a bit more before

Many people do wire up thier homes anyway, there are even tv's with
ethernet not to mention bluray players and game consols and nmt's. So a
modern HT or familly room setup migth have 5-6 networkable things. So
putting a network switch there is not uncommon.

And ethernet wall sockets in a loot off rooms is not unusual either.

Yes that is lossles multichannel it wont work, only DD o Dts . Rip a Dts
cd to a normal stereo wav o flac and try, it will playback as noise on
the analog out but a ht reciever will find the Dts bits in the stream.
i was hoping youd read this.

so multichannel dvda 24/96 ripped to flac just gets dithered to
stereo?

ripped dts audio to wav is the only way to get true multichannel sound?
is the method of ripping, or software, the same as ripping a standard
16 bit cd...with eac or poweramp?

Yes rip the same way, but don't add replay gain tags.

24/96 you are given a choice by the software, most dvd-a contains both
2ch and 5.1 versions on the disc.
And mlp that DVD-A is encoded as, can have a function where a 5.1
stream have a downmix table for 2 ch only equipment. This is up to
the disc author so there are many possibilities.

FLAC and WAV can carry many channels of audio, but you can use only 2
with a squeezebox or any other spdif device

For discrete digital lossles multichannel you need HDMI or propriotary
protocolls like MHR (3-4 paralell spdif with encryption used by
Meridian ) or one of thoose special firewire things denon or sony or
whatever have tried out.
But hdmi will bring it to the masses with blueray.

Spdif can only carry 2ch of discrete audio, or lossy dd or dts streams.

So squeezeboxes would not need this capacity until they get Hdmi
outputs
