+1. I'm a fan of this sort of music going back to the 60s, starting
with The Grateful Dead and Workingman's Dead, New Riders of the
Purple Sage, Flying Burrito Brothers, The Byrds (Sweetheart of the
Rodeo album), Buffalo Springfield, Poco, Neil Young, CSNY, and most
importantly, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings and their outlaw
country approach, and Doug Sahm. My indoctrination was seeing hippie
acts along side of country stuff at the Armadillo World Headquarters in
Austin Texas and similar places in Dallas. I'm sure you're familiar,
but if not, check out: Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Jimmie Dale
Gilmore, Bruce Robison, Joe Ely, Steve Earle, Billy Joe Shaver, Willis
Alan Ramsey, Blaze Foley, Robert Earl Keen, Butch Hancock, Gillian
Welch, Iris Dement, Ray Wylie Hubbard, James McMurtry, Jimmy LaFave,
John Prine, Kasey Chambers, Nanci Griffith, Jerry Jeff Walker
(especially, the classic Viva Terlingua- I had this on 8-track),
Michelle Shocked, Rodney Crowell, Terry Allen (wonderful!!!).and
the list goes on. Great country music, never (or rarely) played on
country music radio!

I had given up using external HDD long time ago.

But I used sometimes a usb stick with version 7.5.2
It was fine.
It didn't work any more with 7.5.3
I just tried 7.5.4 RC, it doesn't work either.

They are indeed just a list of songs but beware the list includes the
full path to the track which will work if your iTunes SBS are both
running on the same Windows box but a playlist entry created on SBS on
Linux is going to look something like
share/music/play-this-track.mp3
and that won't mean jack s*** to iTunes

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Album Cover Art not rendering on Touch

2011-03-21 Thread Davidg1

WMP definitely treats the album art files it creates (inlcuding
folder.jpg), as protected system files. As a result these all have
system and hidden attributes set. they will only be shown in Explorer
if Hide Protected system files is UNCHECKED.

Are these files being stored on a PC and accessed via a SBS running on
that PC or are they being stored on the Touch and accessed via Tiny
SC, the Squeezebox Server running on the Touch itself? Sounds like the
former, but I just want to be sure.

This is your problem, you didn't go back to the original asound.conf. If
you want to play music using aplay over the USB port, you CANNOT have
the USB DAC setup as the default device. Squeezeplay opens the
default device, and if its the USB, squeezeplay gets it, which means
aplay cannot open it, (because squeezeplay already HAS it).

Here is the rule: to play music with aplay, the default device CANNOT
be the USB DAC. If you want to play music with squeezeplay (the Touch's
normal player, from the touch screen etc), the default device HAS to be
 the USB DAC,

You cannot switch between the Touch and aplay with the same
 configuration.

 John S.
Dear John,

May be it was not clear in my explanations, I do not have only one PCM
name defined in my asound.conf but several. I did not want to put the
entire asound.conf that I use now during that debugging phase and only
the part of interest. Since I noticed that it did not work straight I
removed usbdac/plugusb as the default. That allows me to boot (every
time I tried to boot with the Scarlatti as default, with or without
anything else defined in asound.conf, the Touch did not simply start).
I am still long way before trying anything with Sqeezeplay.

I was hoping that it was related to a missing module (I know that it
could be embedded in the kernel during the compilation) but it was the
only idea I had.

I asked to dCS, may be they will have an idea.

Anyway after deleting the file I left a completed DB rebuild running
when I left for work this morning and lo and behold the album artwork
has appeared on the touch. Looks like the problem was that the file was
marked system.

That's quite an old album so was probably ripped with WMP9. Newer
albums don't seem to have that file. Anyway I've learnt something
new:An icon of a CD in its case seems to mean 'cannot read artwork
file' as opposed to a film stock with notes on it which means 'don't
have any artwork'.

Thanks for your help guys - hopefully I can continue to add missing art
without any more oddities.

Glad to hear that things are looking better. Just as a point of info,
you don't need to use WMP for ripping to get those annoying hidden
system album art files (typically Folder.jpg and AlbumArtSmall.jpg) in
your library. If you merely _run_ WMP it will create those files for
any and all music files it finds on your system.

OK, I see whats happening, you are trying to run aplay through the
definition in asound.conf. The best bet is to delete any reference to
USB from the asound.conf and have aplay access the DAC by card number.
This works where using the names sometimes does not. See if that makes
any difference.
