403 message comes from the station which means BBC didn't want to
service your request.

If your player is playing through mysqueezebox.com then it is possible
that BBC geo-ip blocking issue is still messing things ups (it starteded
a few weeks ago but I thought no longer affected UK users) as mysb.com
server may not be UK based. If you connected through your local LMS
(i.e connected to My Music) then BBC will service request.

How are you connected to BBC and what format ? The geo-ip blocking
seems affect WMA more often than AAC.

Your best bet would be to use Triode's BBCiPlayer plugin / applet
(depending on whether you are using LMS or mysb.com) and choose AAC as
the preferred format.

Any sonic benefits going the USB route rather than digital coax out from
Touch to digital coax in on DAC?
That still leaves stereo analog outs viable and also USB port available
for external HDD.

Only thing worthwhile would seem to be USB or digital/optical coax out
from Touch to 24/192-capable DAC.

Not a problem at all, as long as you keep both LMS servers to the same

Switch the Touch to MySB.com when you are done using it. This can be
done from the Home menu if you move "Switch to MySB.com" to your Home
menu.
Touch > Settings > Advanced > Network > "Switch to MySB.com" (press &
hold, select Add to Home Menu)

Just consider "Switch to MySB.com" as your Off button. Simply select My
Music and it will wake & connect to your local LMS server.

Well, if using the IR remote then the Touch "Off/On" functionality is
exactly the same as the SB2/3, it's one button push on the remote.

Using the remote, it's exactly the same. And given that with the SB2/3
the remote interface is all you have, I fail to understand your
reasoning. Expecting the touch interface to work exactly like the remove
interface makes absolutely no sense.

They're not similar. They're identical. There is no such thing as
"off".

Again, being that there is no power off, I fail to understand this line
of thinking. If the Touch is playing audio and you hit either Pause or
Stop, if you can't tell that the command has been received then there's
something very wrong.

It's not universal. These days I have my server on 24/7, but when I
formerly used sleep-and-WOL I never had problems with the Touch waking
the server when it wasn't supposed to. Do you have any applets on the
Touch that may be causing it? Or, even though you set the pc to wake on

should? Or maybe there's a problem with more recent Touch firmware?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to get the Squeezebox Touch to work with CH3HNAS

2012-04-19 Thread aubuti

You can use internet radio, Pandora, Rhapsody, Spotify and other online
services without your pc or NAS on -- just switch the music source to
mysqueezebox.com. To listen to your own music, you need LMS running
somewhere. It could be a pc, a NAS that supports LMS, or the Touch's
built-in LMS. However, to use the Touch's built-in LMS the music library
has to be on a USB drive or SD card connected directly to the Touch. It
is technically possible to get the Touch's built-in LMS to reach out to
a NAS, but people who have done it have found the performance to be
lousy.

So if you don't want to have your pc on to listen to your local library,
and your NAS can't accommodate LMS, then it looks like your last option
is a USB drive connected to the Touch. You should also note that the
success rate with the Touch's built-in LMS is mixed: works fine for
some, terribly for others.

Just FYI, I've had the same problem at times over wireless. Typically
"solving" it came down to checking that the wireless adapter power
management was set to only respond to management stations (magic packet)
-- some unidentified app/malware seemed to be removing this setting --
and then rebooting everything. Sounds like you've already done that.
There is a well-developed 'plugin'

approach is to put ALL your music on the readynas and use the LMS

If you have a dac with a well engineered async usb implementation then
it could potentially be better than an spdif connection as with it the
transport is clock locked to the dac and not the other way round.
However it really depends on the dac and so this is only relavent to
people with such dacs. There have been many more posts here an
elsewhere on this for you to research.

CaptBeyond wrote:
> Don't mean to sound obtuse, but if the DAC only goes up to 96KHz, what's

The factory Touch firmware does not support USB DACs at all, it doesn't
even see them. You need some way to recognize the USB DAC and send the
data stream to the USB port. EDO is all about making that happen with as
many different USB DACs and their configurations as possible. There are
several things done in EDO:

USB DACs use a different 24 bit format than what is used inside the
Touch, EDO does the conversion.
The USB driver inside the Touch firmware only supports UAC1.0 , hence
only up to 96KHz, EDO provides a new driver that supports UAC2.0 in
addition to UAC1.0.

And while he was at it Triode added a new S/PDIF driver that supports
192 KHz.

So if you are using an S/PDIF connection and you are only playing up
through 96KHz, you don't need EDO. If you want to connect to a USB DAC
you have to use SOMETHING, and EDO is the easiest way to do it. There
are some manual hacks I've written about in other threads here, but they
don't completely work with async or UAC2.0 DACs.

Another option is to get a small inexpensive computer to run LMS on.
Things like a sheevaplug ($100) or a DockStar will do nicely. These take
so little power you can easily run them 24/7. The LMS on one of these
can talk to the NAS and send the data to the Touch.

Are you using a USB disk plugged into the Touch to store your music? The
Touch doesn't have a battery backed up clock, so when you unplug the
power the time gets lost, the Touch keeps track of this and won't
display the clock if it know's it doesn't have a valid time.

The Touch is designed to set it's clock from the server it is connected
to, but if you use a USB drive connected to the Touch, the server is on
the Touch so the server doesn't have a correct time either. In this
situation its supposed to try and connect to mysqueezebox.com over the
internet to get the time. If it can't get to the internet or has a
problem logging onto mysqueezebox.com it might not get the time.

If you are connected to a local LMS server the Touch should get the time
from that server and the clock should display.

Hi Triode

Once again many thanks for this.

Update installed. In 'Audio Settings>Digital Output' I'm now presented
with three options:

- Analog & Digital
- Digital Only
- 'USB-Audio - Cambridge Audio DAC100 USB2 [Info]'

The previous message seems to have disappeared. Great!

Can you please confirm that switching from the currently selected option
to another always results in a reboot of the Touch?

One thing I've noticed - if either 'Analog & Digital' or 'Digital Only'
are selected, [Current] apppears beside them showing whichever is the
currently selected option. [Current] doesn't appear beside the
'USB-Audio' option if it is selected.

Ah - you need to select a non usb input and allow it to reboot and then
select the usb dac to get to the point when the warning would be shown.
Could you try this?

Yes this is necessary as the Logitech firmware only detects the output
device and sends the server details of its max sampling rate at
startup.

Yes you get [Current] for those and [Info] for the usb one as there is
an information menu available for it - happy to take suggestions to
improve this to make it more logical but it was the best I could come up
with without using too much text.

Yes, I've done this and the warning no longer appears. Many thanks.

Out of curiosity I reset the DAC to USB Class 1 to see what would happen
and the original warning reappears appropriately so this all seems to be
working OK.

In the past, I occasionally had some problems with embedded art showing
properly. Removed all embedded art and placed it in a cover.jpg file per
album. Has worked flawlessly since. All my art is 500X500 pixels.

Thanks John,
It appears I might have a unit with a problem.

1).The screensaver clock used to show but has been doing so less & less
as time goes on. It is now six months old and despite the screensaver
being set correctly, with the Touch in standby it will not show the time
at all now. This happens with or without a USB drive connected. Mostly I
eject the drive after each use of it.
2).Another issue. Whenever I try to start the Logitech Media Server to
play from a USB drive, I always get the message that there is a
connection problem. Each & every time I then have to unplug & replug the
power and then it works immediately with no issue.

Apart from having to unplug to get the Media Server to activate, the
Touch always has 240v power supplied. It is only ever turned off by
using the orange power button on the remote.

These issues happen with either wireless or Ethernet connection. There
is no issue with my broadband connection as proved by my Cambridge
Sonata NP-30 which streams perfectly at any time.

John, from the above, is it possible that I have a faulty unit?

Thanks & kind regards,
Dave

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Ok. Please make me aware of the proper way to get artwork to display properly.

2012-04-19 Thread cfraser

Well, I also use 500x500 art which I scan myself. I embed the art in
every single track it applies to, so if I copy tracks here or there at
home I don't have to be concerned. I limit the size of art to 30KB
usually, 40KB if it's "complicated", 60KB if it's really complicated
(not common with current releases). A trivial amount of space when tunes
are 10s of MB each. I've never had an issue with the SBT displaying it.
But you must be a bit careful of the "advanced" settings re your
library. And you probably should re-scan your whole library every so
often...at least I do.

The SBT can make the crappiest art look not so bad. Using iPeng, crap
art that looks fine on the SBT looks like real crap, almost illegible.

If you are using VortexBox, the preferred art location is cover.jpg in
each album directory.

If you want to find or upgrade cover art, bliss works very well for
this. http://www.blisshq.com. I have it set to look for cover art
500x500 or larger. This displays well on my iPad with iPeng or
SqueezePad. Well worth the cost. You can install bliss from the VB GUI
Upgrade page http://vortexbox/upgrade.php.

Why pay for it when you can get it for free?

2012-04-19 Thread Mnyb

I use embedded art for a number of reasons , foremost the file is self
sufficient if I pick single songs to be used in another context they
still have their art and for downloaded albums it has been common with
different art for every track ?

But I still keep a cover.jpg/folder.jpg for each album , in case some
software prefers that .

> 500*500 since I got an iPad .

Always use jpeg ! Resizing png or bmp is a memory hog for the server
bitmaps are the worst .
Especially if you use embedding , embedding a large BMP is not a good
thing.

People, that use the Touch stand alone have problems with large art and
non jpeg art, sometimes also embedded art ?

Really big art can be a problem like 3000*3000 if you have a slow server
or for some iPad apps empirically ~ 1400*1400 works for me

Using the MUSICAL FIDELITY - M1DAC A DIGITAL CONVERTER for expostion
purposes
http://www.musicdirect.com/p-53380-musical-fidelity-m1dac-a-digital-converter.aspx

The USB route, as you describe, with attendant conversion would
theoretically cause sonic degradation, would it not?
The USB DAC input on the M1DAC supports up to 24/96.

The digital coax input on the M1DAC, however, supports up to 24/192 and
would be the ideal connection with the Touch, provided the Touch with
Triode's EDO sends the FLAC file as purely pass-through without the
Touch doing any digital conversions to it.

It is not the Touch that does the 192 > 96 conversion it is the server ,
and that is done very well with SoX, a very good quality software so it
does not introduce artefacts that you can hear.

So with EDO people with anaemic servers ( NAS box ) can use their 192k
files if they have any .
And USb only DAC is served . This is a great enhancement.

However it is simply not humanly possible to tell a 192k file from a 96k
file ( no it is not ).

And is not almost all files 44.1/16 anyway 99% of mine are , so
performance here is what matters .

So pursuing this for audio nirvana is forfeit ..

But to best utilze your equipment this is good , some DAC have USB some
have spdiff some have both .
And as John S repeatedly tells us , there is no guarantee that the USB
is always the best choice on a given DAC , it is all about
implementation .
