Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Okay to always have the screen on?

2013-02-14 Thread Pascal Hibon

My Touch is a couple of years old now and I leave it on 24/7. The
display still works fine. When idle, my Touch shows the clock and
weather forecast from the SDT plugin.
On the positive side, the Touch has an environment light sensor that
adjusts the display brightness according to the available ambient light
(automatic brightness control). So at night it is quite dark and that
will prolong the display’s life for sure. The automatic brightness
control is configurable in the Touch. You can adjust the minimum and
maximum brightness settings.

How about decoding files

Would you say that it's better to do that on the comp/serv. rather than
in the touch?

From my experience I get the feeling the sq seems better when decoded in
the touch which runs contrary to what you hear ppl saying?

what's your opinion?

2013-02-14 Thread Zombie

Recent measurements elesewhere suggest that it is better to do it on the
Touch, although the general consensus is the opposite to lower the load
on the Touch processor.
Frankly, if you have a fast NAS/server PC, a fast Ethernet connection
and a good router you won't hear any difference...to use 24/192 is an
overkill anyway and a waste of space and money. But hey, that's just my
personal opinion...

I'd leave default decoding on the TOUCH. As noted, see here:

I could be wrong, but as far as I remember you can only adjust the
minimum in the automatic mode. If I'm not wrong this was the reason that
I've switched to the manual mode, where a fixed brightness is used. I
dimmed it quite a bit accepting the disadvantage that it can be hardly
seen during a sunny day. But I hope that it will live longer with this
setting.

why do you want older firmware? I don't think your problem is a
firmware problem. But if you really want different firmware, you just
connect your TOUCH to a PC running an older version of LMS/SbS and the
firmware will be automatically downgraded to match. Again, I don't think
this is your problem. But old LMS/SbS available for download here:

True. But there is a way around that.
First install the Patch Installer (through the applet installer). Next
install the Reduce Screensaver Brightness patch (though the patch
installer). This patch allows you to set both maximum and minimum
brightness. I also use this patch to have a brighter screen when the
Touch is playing in a low light environment. Works great.

I don't have flickr plugin installed but art and text are fine on my now
playing screen. So not sure that is related. So you've touched the
touch screen to cycle through the various now playing screens correct?
I suppose last resort is a factory reset of the TOUCH to get back to
default (little button above the power input on back of touch).

have some service or repair documentation that one can use to fix

If it is still under warranty I do not undedrstand why Logitech cannot
replace it as it is my understanding that as late as last week they were
selling re-furbs for £181?

If you used a credit card to buy it, and that cc offers buyers
protection (most do), you actually have a 3 year warranty (some
restrictions apply).
Absent a repair option the cc will either buy you a replacement or
refund the entire purchase price.
