2011-02-10 Thread carib

With much interest I read the opening post. For over half a year I've
been doubting if I should buy a SB-Touch or not. The setup I want is
the same like Jeans: a Touch fed by an external USB-disk.
I don't like the thought of energyconsuming NAS under my desk, even my
babygirl has 'green'lightbulbs in her bedlighting. The only device that
may make my electric meter go rinkle is my beautifull vacuum tube
 amplifier :)
So I was thinking to buy a USB-powered WD 160Gb Elements and a SBTouch
and hook it all together. My question to you is: is it the best choice?
In the posts you wrote I sometimes read some cynism and it makes me
wonder if I'm doing the right thing. I do know a thing or two about
computers and Linux etc, so a bumpy road won't make it impossible for
me to get to my destination. But if the SBTouch turns out to be a 10k
miles journey, I might get an alternative.

I wouldn't call it a 10K but its no walk in the park either. I began
using the full SBS on an old refurbished PC after a couple of months of
trying (sometimes successfully) to use TinySB with an attached USB self
powered 320GB HDD (~15,000 mixed FLAC/MP3 files). If the post I just
read here is correct, I will look forward to going back to the attached
USB HDD and TinySB. However, in the mean time, using the server is a
lot more convenient than hassling with the Touch to listen to music.
This is not to say that it doesn't work, it does, so IMO don't use that
as a breaking point in deciding to go with the Touch, once you listen to
the thing, you wont be disappointed.

Hi Trixster,

Mnyb is absolutely right about the underpowered CPU in the Touch. You
should first search out this forum for the compatibility issues
mentioned and about how your music is stored on the external hdd before
giving up. There are issues with album art and extraneous files (ie non
audio files) that could be slowing or crashing the Touch. Most of all
stay with it and you wont be disappointed. Try an external SBS on a PC
in the meantime while you figure out whats crashing your setup. Believe
me it works, not flawlessly, but it works.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] I give up! SB Touch External HD Nightmare

2010-09-09 Thread carib

Hi Mark, glad you’re sticking it out with the SB Touch. I felt I had to
chime in on some of the issues brought up in this thread. Like you, I
too stressed out at first try setting up a standalone Touch, but I
eventually got it working. I just ordered my second SB Radio yesterday
(this time in black). For some time now I’ve been running the Touch as
my main network music server using TinySBS and an attached hard drive.
It hasn’t been easy but I’m determined to make it work as it’s supposed
to … as a standalone network music player (… this is NOT my mission
statement).

Fortunately for me, I started out using a NAS connected to my PC
running SBS and THEN tested the Touch using a USB stick and an SD card
BEFORE trying a WD MyBook hdd, which, btw, didn’t work. I eventually
purchased a powered 320GB USB (Fat32) Hitachi 2.5 hdd that has been
working “fine” ever since (“fine” = headaches, heartbreaks and plain
and ordinary frustration).

What's truly unfortunate is the TinySBS itself. Don’t get me wrong, it
work!! BUT, how so miserably. It’s sooo unstable and sooo
unpredictable, however, sooo clever too. I must agree with toby10,
Logitech SHOULD dedicate more developer time looking into ways of
stabilizing this gadget. Like he says, it’s a great product and a
great idea … just poorly implemented.
I can handle using a PC music server running SBS as a last resort or
for instance, a party, however, I really want this to work as a
standalone. I don’t write code and I’m not a power user … I’m just a
music lover, nothing fancy, just very serious about quality sound. The
Touch has it if only it could stand up to its reputation and hype.

I have this same setup and what works for me is having the Radio

choose Touch as Player on your Radio (ie Choose Player Touch) menu.

I use the Touch with attached HDD mostly on weekends and holidays so I
eject the HDD but leave the Touch running on mysqueezebox.com to listen
to internet radio. Once its attached I usually leave it connected for a
few days.

To re-attach the drive I first start TinySC and when it asks for a USB
or SD card I attach the drive. Re-scan doesn't take very long after
the initial full scan. Sometimes it's a hit and miss situation, at
times I have to reboot the Touch before re-attaching the drive. It
just takes a little patience but it works for me.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Standalone with HDD Which File Format?

2010-06-21 Thread carib

I have been using an attached hard drive for about a month now. Every
weekend I add anywhere between 20 to 30 gb of music (50/50 mp3/FLAC) to
the 200gb already stored on it from my music collection on my NAS. This
is the same music that has always worked with my Touch/PC/NAS
arrangement, except I deleted all the non-music files except for one
cover.jpg for each directory. The attached drive uses external power
because the Touch doesn't supply enough power for it to work right (not
a big deal to me).

I really haven't witnessed any buffering problems or error messages.
So, I suggest, for quick and dirty ripping, rip to mp3 but if you want
to conserve music quality rip to FLAC using moderate compression.

It there are limitations to the capabilities of the internal server,

I've used a Touch as a traditional Squeezebox player with an external

 Ha. So true.

 7) Cancel preoder.
 8) Now, I'm just casually interested in the Touch. It still seems like
a good product, but not sure if I really need it or would use it that
much. So, given the cost, I'll wait till it comes out, see how it
performs, and reevaluate if I still want one. As far as I am concerned
now, they can wait till Christmas, because I'll probably just ask for
one as a gift at that point.

So true, so true.
