Now that I think of it... Since Logitech bought Squeeze there really
hasnt been the rate of development and refinement that you would expect
from a company as advanced as Logitech. I'm a tech geek type of guy so I
like the challenge that comes with the tremendous flexibility built into
these devices. The software side of things still has a very open
source flavor. Thats endearing in a way, but there are many consumers
who, rightly so, expect more.

I would buy something from The Cable Company or Better Cables, etc
- Go for about double the $15 for the Belkin and you should be ok and
not have to think about it again. Also, as short as possible.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Ok dumb audio question

2011-04-17 Thread earwaxer9

I have my sub set up behind the listening area about 15ft from the rig.
I have experimented with a long digital out from the Transporter to an
MSB DAC that is close to the salve amp, then short interconnect to sub.
Interestingly enough I originally was just using a good quality 20ft sub
interconnect (not digital coax) to the MSB DAC. I thought it was good
enough for a sub. After a period, for the jollies (and about $10), I
bought a 20ft toslink optical to give it a try. I was surprised. Big
positive difference. Tighter, deeper, better bass definition.

On a side note, from what I have read from expert opinion, there seems
to be a consensus that good digital coax (using proper cable) bests
toslink. I havent heard enough difference to make a judgement.

 thanks.

I know squeezecenter uses SOX. Not sure how. Maybe a programmer could
weigh in on that. I'm curious myself what goes on in my Transporter. I
kind of assume that it upsamples everything to at least 24/96. Would
like to know what algorithms are used. I upsample my redbook before I
send it to the Transporter. I find it sounds better.

I also have found dividends in upsampleing redbook to 24/96 before
sending it to the Touch/Transporter. Need a laptop to handle that. Also
I like to run the beta squeezecenter. Frequent updates would be a real
pain on a NAS. Just get a big ass hard drive.

I havent read all the posts here - My two cents - I would rip to WAV
using foobar with SOX SRC (signal rate converter) VHQ linear,
converting to 24/96. I would also use a PC and ethernet. A PC has
enough power to handle the higher bit rate. Not all converters are the
same. I also have dbpoweramp. They use SSRC as a SRC. Not as good in my
opinion. Get used to playing with your music!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] connected my Touch to SBS via ethernet for the first time (wow!)

Is this opinion universally held here? Trust me I didn't expect to hear
much of a difference when I tried the ethernet connection -- I
stubbornly had been running a HDD directly to the Touch for months
cause I didn't think there would be a difference -- but was completely
blown away when I tried it. (And I had connected via wifi prior to the
 HDD).

Since I have it connected via ethernet, I literally haven't turned the
music off during waking hours, it sounds so much better. It is
smoother, less-fatiguing, and if I may mix metaphors, sounds like the
difference between 'listening in 2d' vs. 3d.

I have found the same - Ethernet was significantly different sounding
than WIFI. I have explained this before - I though at first it was just
a loudness difference. Then ethernet seemed more forward, and clinical.
I switched back to WIFI and stayed with it for some time, thinking it
was more analog - more forgiving. What I realized is that ethernet
sounded bigger. Bigger bandwidth possibly. More real. Larger
soundstage. Clearer and better transients also. Overall, I would
conclude the sound is better.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Why is my Touch constantly rebuffering??

2011-01-28 Thread earwaxer9

I have found - especially with beta server downloads - do a COMPLETE
uninstall. Install the most recent server software and rescan you
music. I have been using the 7.6.0 server with my Transporter. I like
it, but its glitchy. Buffering issues have been largely a function of
CPU overload on my laptop. I have only had buffering when I'm ripping
albums - processor intensive.

To me there seems to very few really good USB implementations. So why
bother unless you have this very special Ayre DAC with this
 asynchronous USB implemetation.
And I supose it had to be met with a good USB output in the driving PC

But it's audiophilia USB is the lates buzz :-/ for a while it was
AES-EBU all over ? or ST optics, wonder whats next when the USB fad

Its USB that most perks my curiosity these days. It was curious that in
the Stereophile Touch review, the reviewer found that PC via ethernet to
Touch to Ayre via tweaked USB output as the best Mo Fo sound he has
heard bla, bla, bla, etc. etc. IMHO, I give credit to the Touch for
that assessment vs. the USB protocol in the Ayre.

From my initial review reads - USB has some growing to do. SPDIF has
its own problems which are well documented. So, anything I find on USB,
in particular the real contenders - unsync protocols - I'm right there.
USB - right now - seems like the audiophile lazy mans way out in some
ways. I may be missing the point. Im still not happy with the idea of
running a USB cable to a DAC.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Ethernet connection and another question.

2010-09-13 Thread earwaxer9

With my Transporter, after listening via ethernet, I'm in the habit of
turning the Transporter off with the remote, then pulling the power
cable before I unplug the ethernet cable from the laptop. Next
listening session I plug the ethernet cable to the laptop, then plug
the power cable to the transporter back in. The Transporter then looks
for ethernet and establishes a connection. That seems to work the
quickest.
