It is good at telling time, other than that I do not use the touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Radio stations logo icons on the Touch?

2012-02-04 Thread slate

I think that it also is a plus if the stations embed their logo in their
stream.
All my favorites have icons including Radio Paradise which are good to
include track info and covers in their stream.
However I recently added their 192 ogg stream as an favorite but it
still shows the default icon... maybe because RP does not embed any
information at all in this particular stream.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 32 vs 64 bit Windows 7 OS

2012-01-12 Thread slate

As your server are dedicated to squeezebox use there will be no
benefit.

The performance as such are the same for 32 or 64 bit code. 64 bit
gives you the option to address more memory and that can give you more
performance if your program can exploit it; However squeezebox server
does not.

If you look in the taskmanager I will guess that windows + antivirus +
squeezebox server does not use more than 900 MB.

But since it is a dedicated server you could look into:
- stopping unneeded services
- uninstall Flash and other not needed programs

On my server I have 35 processes running.

I guess that you have already set the
Settings|Advanced|Performance|Database Memory Config = High

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] What File Type does the SBT Play?........

2012-01-09 Thread slate

The boxes are able to handle a couple of formats natively: from memory
wav, MP3, FLAC... I think the Touch can do 1 or 2 more.

Anyway the server know what the individual boxes can do natively, and
will otherwise transcode the more obscure formats on the fly. So
normally you will not have to worry about this.
A FLAC files is streamed as FLAC

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] internal server upgrades improve performance?

2011-12-28 Thread slate

There is always the releasenote
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Release_Notes

However from the notes it is not always clear if there are performance
improvements in a given release.
And it is also not clear what features you do not get when running
Touch embedded server or some puny NAS. I assume the you can't use the
new DLNA plugin that was introduced in 7.7.0.

All said there are big performance improvements in 7.6.0+7.6.1 for
scanning and artwork handling.
And even that you do not get the benefit of new features you will still
get error corrections

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Newbie SB Touch Help Please.

2011-09-14 Thread slate

1. Personally I prefer a PC because it is not locked.
In terms of performance I would not like something slower than a ATOM
CPU. Some people are satisfied with less.

In terms of power usage ATOM and Brazo are the low end, but actually
Intel i3 and AMD Llano series can get down to 30 watt. And they can
have higher performance if needed.
Off cause an old laptop is also low power by nature e.g a used laptop
with a defect monitor would be fine.

On a technical level a x86 based CPU is god because it have a good
floating point and is supported by almost everything... or seeing it
from the other side; some of the CPUs used in the smaller NAS does not
support all features offered by the Squeeze solution.

In a NAS also pay attention to the amount of RAM... if it have an ATOM
or higher CPU it would also have minimum 1 GB RAM.

2. It is normally recommended to have your server/NAS cabled for 2
reasons:
1. The music does not have to travel over the wireless twice.
This is an old advice and can have merit if your wireless signal
is
borderline.

2. a cabled server/NAS makes it possible to make it Wake On Lan
(WOL).
The server sleeps but wakes up when it receives a WOL package
from
the Controller/app or Squeezebox.
This is not possible on wireless.

Notice that several improvements have been made in scanning and artwork
handling that should also lead to improved performance.
However I do not know how big an improvement it provides for a Touch.
On my x86 server a fullscan became 3-3,5 times faster, but that
includes the introduction of SQLite in SBS... Touch have SQLite all

Sounds like you have more than one problem on your hands.

Lets focus on the The next day I cant access the web control. I get
the message on the web control as Link broken or failed port

I guess that you are on 7.5.x at the moment?! lets stay on that while
investigating this.
Could you describe your setup in details?! what equipment do you have?
Is it wireless or cabled? Details about your server setup?

For me it sounds like a network issue. Have you given you equipment
dedicated IP addresses? You can do that in two ways, pr unit or as in
my case where I in my router interface can give specific IP addresses
to specific MAC addresses.

Also if wireless connected check the channel saturation using eg
ínssider http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/
It is ok if there are other wireless networks on the same channel as
long as their signal is weak otherwise consider changing it. Use
channels 1, 6 or 11

The code no longer differs on capital letters or strips trailing
spaces.
So the following 3 would now be considered different, but would
previously have been one genre:
Rock
ROCK
Rock

If I look in my own genre list I have:
Rock
ROCK
Synthpop
SynthPop

= work for me to do one evening.

And these which was also a problem before 7.6.x
New Age
Newage
Sound Track
Soundtrack

obviously I do not actively use genre in my daily usage ;-)

To all - Swiftie found out that his problem was that much of his artwork
were downloaded by WMP and it apparently set the hidden file attribute.
It appears that the 7.6 code changes can't handle this.
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89028

Try and check some of your missing artwork files for this.

From a command prompt I think that this should do the trick
attrib *.jpg -H /S
attrib *.jpeg -H /S
attrib *.png -H /S

Sure, but remember on this forum we try to help eachother out. At the
moment I have no idea about your setup other than artwork doesn't
work

Yes it is annoying to have the problems; But at least provide basic
information to help narrow down the problems.
There are 7-8 people that have reported artwork issues this far and we
or Logitech have to figure out why it does not work for you guys...
what is special about your setup.

So to start with:
- Have you checked for the hidden attribute?
- Do you use embedded artwork?
- What platform are your running on?
- Any error messages in the server or scanner logfiles?

BTW if you want to rant to logitech you should contact their support or
use the official forum.

I think that Phil wanted you to take the DAC out of the chain and
connect the Touch directly to your amp, is to determine that the track
is not causing the noise.

What firmware is your Touch running? and your SBS server if you use
it?
There was an error a while back, that the digital out would shift
briefly to 16/44 in between tracks (before the next 24/96 tracks would
start) causing noise. So better check that you are on the latest
firmware.

Actually my DAC caused similar issues. It uses Reed relays in the
construction and they are to trigger if there is an incoming signal or
not. Because of component variance I often got a little bleep sound in
between tracks.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Experience with Touch after a few weeks

2010-10-11 Thread slate

If the Sheva/Guru-plug is ruled out then the next step in low power
usage is http://www.fit-pc.com.

I did consider this for a while, but personally my storage requirements
are just a tad larger, and I would have to have external USB harddrives
connected.
So I choose to buy a atom based mini-ITX board and put it into an old
PC cabinet I already had.

With the new Atom based boards you can get really low in power
consumption as well; now that the old 945 chipset is out.
The time of the plugs are over in my view, because with a mini-ITX you
also get many the options of a PC.

You can see some examples here http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=47

I would say that the benefit of a faster card is limited in this

Of cause faster is always nice; the only place I know it really counts

When shooting a series of pictures the write speed can slow one down.
But for us normal users that stores fotos as jpeg instead of RW and
don't do 20 fotos/second of a bird feeding on a flower... not so big an
issue.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Performance comparison between my old Server and Touch internal one?

2010-04-23 Thread slate

Information about SBS plugins
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezeCenter_Plugins

Actually I have not gone through all the plugins on my server yet.

I have removed the obvious plugins and stripped Win7 a bit. It is only
used for SBS so there are no other applications installed.

In this moment my server is at 660 MB, of which SBS is using 93 MB.

FYI SBS 7.6 nightly using SQLLite - no mysql running.

Are you using the mysql that comes with SBS?
In that case you might be able to gain a little by doing this

However I do not think that is your problem.

Are there anything unusual in the server or scanner logfiles? errors?
constant repeated scanning?
