Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 32 vs 64 bit Windows 7 OS
As your server are dedicated to squeezebox use there will be no benefit. The performance as such are the same for 32 or 64 bit code. 64 bit gives you the option to address more memory and that can give you more performance if your program can exploit it; However squeezebox server does not. If you look in the taskmanager I will guess that windows + antivirus + squeezebox server does not use more than 900 MB. But since it is a dedicated server you could look into: - stopping unneeded services - uninstall Flash and other not needed programs On my server I have 35 processes running. The boxes are able to handle a couple of formats natively: from memory wav, MP3, FLAC... I think the Touch can do 1 or 2 more. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] internal server upgrades improve performance?
There is always the releasenote http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Release_Notes However from the notes it is not always clear if there are performance improvements in a given release. And it is also not clear what features you do not get when running Touch embedded server or some puny NAS. I assume the you can't use the new DLNA plugin that was introduced in 7.7.0. All said there are big performance improvements in 7.6.0+7.6.1 for scanning and artwork handling. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Newbie SB Touch Help Please.
1. Personally I prefer a PC because it is not locked. In terms of performance I would not like something slower than a ATOM CPU. Some people are satisfied with less. In terms of power usage ATOM and Brazo are the low end, but actually Intel i3 and AMD Llano series can get down to 30 watt. And they can have higher performance if needed. Off cause an old laptop is also low power by nature e.g a used laptop with a defect monitor would be fine. On a technical level a x86 based CPU is god because it have a good floating point and is supported by almost everything... or seeing it from the other side; some of the CPUs used in the smaller NAS does not support all features offered by the Squeeze solution. In a NAS also pay attention to the amount of RAM... if it have an ATOM or higher CPU it would also have minimum 1 GB RAM. 2. It is normally recommended to have your server/NAS cabled for 2 reasons: 1. The music does not have to travel over the wireless twice. This is an old advice and can have merit if your wireless signal is borderline. 2. a cabled server/NAS makes it possible to make it Wake On Lan (WOL). The server sleeps but wakes up when it receives a WOL package from the Controller/app or Squeezebox. This is not possible on wireless. -- slate Main: Receiver (Audiocom) - Beresford Caiman+ (Gatorized) - Carver A-500x - BW 704 Office: Receiver - Luxman L-210 - Stax SR84 Pro/Superlux HD668B Server: Zotac IONITX-A, 4 GB, 1 TB WD EADS, Win7 w. 7.6 (SQLite w. What firmware is your Touch running? and your SBS server if you use it? There was an error a while back, that the digital out would shift briefly to 16/44 in between tracks (before the next 24/96 tracks would start) causing noise. So better check that you are on the latest firmware. Actually my DAC caused similar issues. It uses Reed relays in the construction and they are to trigger if there is an incoming signal or not. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Experience with Touch after a few weeks
If the Sheva/Guru-plug is ruled out then the next step in low power usage is http://www.fit-pc.com. I did consider this for a while, but personally my storage requirements are just a tad larger, and I would have to have external USB harddrives connected. So I choose to buy a atom based mini-ITX board and put it into an old PC cabinet I already had. With the new Atom based boards you can get really low in power consumption as well; now that the old 945 chipset is out. The time of the plugs are over in my view, because with a mini-ITX you also get many the options of a PC.
