Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Can a Squeezebox Touch access a NAS?

2011-02-23 Thread oh6781

I have a wired Linux-based Western Digital NAS which is currently
serving 3 wired WD TV Live HD media players in different location of my
house. I only maintain 1 source of Music/HD Video contents in the WD NAS
and it all worked great. Since my SB Touch can not see the WD NAS and I
am beginning to maintain 2 sources of music Library (one from my PC)
which is a pain, Can I install the free Vortex Linux server software to
my WD NAS that will allow the Touch to access the WD NAS? Has anybody
done this before? Thank You for your advice

Vortexbox is not simply server software -- it is a complete operating
system, based on Fedora Linux. So installing Vortexbox means
_replacing_ the Linux operating system on your NAS. As NAS OSs are
usually very customized distros for that particular hardware, I would
be surprised if you could put Vortexbox on it. Does the NAS even have
an x86 CPU?

As an alternative, why not run SBS on your PC but use the NAS as the
library, instead of having a separate copy on your PC? If you are
running the regular SBS there is nothing that says the library has to
be on the same machine.

Hi aubuti :

Good Point, are you saying that I share that NAS Folder from the PC
that is running the SBS and My Touch should see the NAS library so I do
not need to maintain another copy of the Music library on the PC? I will
try this when I get home tomorrow, Thank You so much, This forum is
awesome!!

Right. Basically you access the NAS folder from the PC that is running
SBS. Then in SBS Settings Basic settings specify the NAS folder as
your music library.

If you are running Windows on your pc there are two ways you could
specify the NAS folder. One is by assigning a drive letter (using
Windows Explorer). The other is by using the UNC address, which takes
the form \\servername\foldername. I don't run SBS on Windows so I am not
sure which is the preferred approach, but if one doesn't work, try the
other. Or there are plenty others around here who know the answer.

Hey Logitech. How about letting the Touch mount network drives? It's
getting more common by the day.

 -Ron.

The main performance bottleneck would be collecting and storing the
meta information. I had some bad experience with network players
(terratec) that attempted to scan (network-) folders collect meta data
AND play music all rolled into one box; it wasn't good at either. I
really like slimdevices approach of devided labour that a media player
should dumb in a way that is should be stellar at playing audio but
not much anything else. Leave the meta storage to a silly storage
server, NAS or otherwise. The Touch seems to throw this design a bit
overboard.

They are letting the Touch mount network drives. It's just that you
have to work at it a bit (see the NFS thread that amcluesent
referenced), and your performance will probably be lousy unless you
mount the database/cache on a USB drive or SD card attached to the
Touch. And even then your performance may be lousy. You can do it --
it's just not supported because it's a problematic configuration. Those
are two different things.

If you're going to have a NAS running anyway, a better solution is to
use a NAS that can run SBS.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Can a Squeezebox Touch access a NAS?

2011-02-07 Thread Mnyb

Some have done it with an NFS share it can work but is unsoported, scan
can be sloow, Touch is not a great server if you runned it on computer
you notice and no web-UI and other limitations.

But you definitely NOT want to mount a drive over wifi :-) and it's is
not recommended to have server on wifi even if ti works spledidly for
many .

This combo would yield 3 or4 times the normal wifi traffic.
Is drobo wired or wifi ?

here is how the music file would travel.

Drobo---(wifi)---router---(wifi)---Touch---(wifi)---Router---(wifi)---Boom

And with wired interface on router and server (Touch)

Drobo---router---Touch---router---(wifi)---Boom

It's not supported by some people have reported success in configuring
the Touch to mount an NFS share which the embedded Squeezebox Server
can index. Search on this Forum.
