It's fine with that message, it's actually still enabled. The code that

I'm sorry, I use SPDIF (Toslink) into my DSPeaker Dual Core DAC/EQ, not
USB, so I cannot replicate your problem. Earlier on, I tried USB via a
VLink II USB to SPDIF converter, and had no problem with crackling.

Try varying the order in which you load TT, EDO, and SBGK. If that does
not work, I would suggest dropping TT from the mix.

I bought an S-Booster a while back figuring that for the price I didn't
have much to lose. I left it in for a few weeks and forgot about it.
Then a couple of weeks ago I decided to pull it out. I found the sound
became more lively without it. Was I imagining things? Anyhow, yesterday
I popped it back in and things sounded dull again.

Sometimes it's a compromise between smooth and dull vs harsh and
lively. I'll give it another try but for now I find my sound to be as
smooth as it'll probably get with the Touch. (or maybe I'm imagining
things...)

A sidenote - After owning it for several months I decided to give my
Oppo BDP-93 a try as a transport(PC running
Mezzmo---ethernet---Oppo---S/PDIF---EE DAC). To me it bettered the
Touch + CIA Power supply + EDO + TT3.0 + SBGK in every way.
The tradeoff, in this case, is that it's not as user friendly as the
Touch.

Two comments. First, I find recordings to be far more variable than
anything I do to my system. Sometimes the tweak that best highlights one
recording brings out the worst in another. The problem in trying to
fix things that way is it quickly becomes a dog chasing its own tail.

Second, humans have very vivid imaginations and it is very easy to make
grand declarations about small changes.

The nice thing for the person playing recordings in their home is that
the only thing that really matters is that they are happy with their
system.

Actually I'm quite happy with my humble Touch based system. I was an
early SB adopter and have converted many to it.

I#8217;m most happy when I play random music and do things about the
house. It allows me to listen to the music, not the system. But just
like the people who own megabuck systems I inevitably end up on one of
these forums and the tweaking starts over again. It's OK, it's part of
the game.

What I'm saying is that with the Oppo feeding my DAC, violin is sweeter,
piano sounds meatier and muted trumpets are a little bit easier to
listen to with the volume past 9 o'clock. Navigating the menu is another
story and I still haven#8217;t figured out how to select genres and
play my music folder randomly#8230;yet. So the Touch remains my go to
source...for now.

And yeah Pat Barber Café Blue sounds good no matter what. I save Stones
fingernails on a blackboard records for my crappy car stereo.

don't think any other tweaking is necessary (TT3.0 or other parameter

I haven't seen this mentioned in the other messages, but how did you
make the comparison that led to the conclusion the Touch is bright
sounding? When I got my first Squeezebox, I compared CDs played on my CD
player against the exact same music ripped to lossless format (FLAC)
through the player. I started the two sources as closely in sync as I
could and level matched them so the volume was the same, then switched
the amp's input control between the two. I could not reliably hear any
difference in sound quality.

Expectations and subconscious influences have a big impact on what we
hear, so do some carefully setup comparisons and give yourself a bit of
time to adjust to the new device in your system.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to improve Touch sound?

2012-08-10 Thread bencat

I would echo the advice of the others but would also suggest that you
consider doing one or both of the following. One load the Triode EDO App
this does seem to help the SBT and adds some naturalness to the output
(I am talking about digital only as that is all I use ) . Two take the
time and load the Toolbox 3.0. If you can live with the whole package
(no screen , no remote , no wi fi ) then you will hear a good level of
improvement in the sound quality which makes the SBT sound more natural
and increases the sound stage . Lastly if youy wish (and I would
strongly advise a sale or return trial) buy and improved Linear power
supply there are a number out there .
http://markgrantcables.co.uk/ do one that I think is good and is not too
expensive . This last is not agreed with by many and they view it as not
worth doing. I found it made a small but significant difference and
would describe it a the icing on the cake , nice to have but not
essential.

The above can make quite a large difference to the SBT for just a bit of
your time . With Toolbox you can control and turn on and off those
features that you do and do not need . Each one you add takes a little
away from the best possible sound but again it is not that much and if
you need the screen to navigate (lots of users have Andorid Phones and
Iphones as controllers , I use a duet Controller because it was on sale
in the uk cheap) and infr red remote then you have to keep them on.

Possibly. However, I have three Touches. One outputs to an external DAC.
Two use the Touch internal DAC. If anything, the internal DAC tends to
tame both frequency extremes. Since the OP complains of sound that is
too bright and 'digital', it is unlikely that an external DAC will help.
it's also quite doubtful that a different power supply will help, for
the same reason.

But we all listen for different clues and to different kinds of music,
so it's certainly worth a try if the OP can borrow a good DAC. Nothing
like listening with one's own ears!

Your Luxman is very probably not the culprit. I'm not familiar with your

toe-in angles. There is nothing that needs burn-in time in the Touch.
But it's still a good idea to listen to a variety of music over a few

Agreed. My earlier suggestion about giving the Touch a few days'
listening was entirely about giving the device a fair hearing and not
at all about burn-in.

In my experience and with my systems (see sig below) the sound of the
Touch, either through the digital or the analog out, is not particularly
bright or 'digital'. Aubuti's advice is good: listen for a while before
spending money on new equipment. But if after a few weeks you still find
the sound objectionable, then you may want to focus on that which may
actually make a significant difference in sound: primarily speakers,
speaker and listening chair placement, and room. Amps, preamps (if any)
and DACs can have an effect on sound, but their contribution is
generally far less evident than that of speakers and room.

Hope this helps, but feel free to tell us more about your equipment,
room, listening habits, etc., if you would like further advice.
