This problem has plagued me for ages and have just come to these forums
looking for information to find this comment. My squeezeboxserver is
current debian-testing which is 7.5.6. This installs firmware v130 on
my sb. However, I use mysb.com frequently and I find that it often
blanks out and doesn't respond to the remote. Sometimes it prompts me
for a software update, and when i do that it goes to v137 which then
seems to work fine. However immediately after that update, I can't go
back to squeezeboxserver because it just prompts me for another update
(even though 134 is 137?). How can I get around this cycle?

My sb never used to do this. This problem has been introduced only in
the last 18 months or so.

You can't. If your SBS server version is not the same as the MySB
server version then you will always be prompted to upgrade/downgrade on
every server switch.

The only way to avoid this is to not switch servers or update your SBS
to the same version as MySB, currently 7.6

Well you've pointed me to the problem. I am running squeezeboxserver on
ubuntu using the debian testing apt source which is 7.5.6~32834. I just
checked and stable = 7.6.0, unstable = 7.6.1~32935. Testing version is
supposed to be between stable and unstable so clearly
logitech/slimdevices have a problem with the testing repository and
have had these problems for a long time. I will change to stable and
leave it there.

Since doing the 7.6 update, the SBT doesn't recognise the server (no IP
addr) when wired ethernet.
With wireless, it can't find DHCP.
I wish I had the missing artwork problem, I now have nothing

Done Factory Reset (after rebooting router which did nothing)
What should I try next, get on to logitech?

Thanks everyone

Having been in the software business for 30 years, I learned never to
install an upgrade 'just because it was there'.

You upgrade software to 'get something' you want. And you are willing
to take the risk of upgrading, because you want that 'something' badly
enough.

Been there - done that.

A waste of time as far as I can tell - countless reports of woe and
hardly any responses from Logitech staff. I doubt they have any idea
of what to do - they usually don't have much of a clue in my
experience, and often refer people to THIS forum!

Try opening a support ticket and you're required to hunt around for
part numbers and pids, etc.

7.6.0 has a lot of problems, no question about it. But this particular
question of matching player firmware to the server software has been
standard practice since forever. If you don't want the firmware to
switch, then don't switch between different servers (eg, mysb.com and
local SBS) that require different player firmware. And it's not as if
you need to connect explicitly to mysb.com to get internet radio --
 connect via SBS.

But doesn't listening to internet radio through SBS require that the
computer be on at all times? With MySB.com, it was just my router that
needed to be on.

Are you using the official 7.6.0 release or a nightly 7.6.1 build ?
If you are using the nightly 7.6.1 build that could be the problem
because there doesn't seem to be any 7.6.1 firmware directory available
at mysqueezebox.com so it might use firmware it has downloaded in your
old installation.

Try to delete any files in the updates directory in the Cache
folder and restart SBS and see if that solves it. You will find the
location of the Cache folder by looking in SBS Settings/Information.

Listening to internet radio via SBS doesn't require the computer to be
on at all times -- only all the times that you want to listen to
internet radio. :-)

What I'm suggesting is a workaround to tide you over until you can get
your server to successfully run the same version # of the software as
mysb.com. Whether you succeed with 7.6.0, or 7.6.1, whatever, who
knows? Only you can decide which of the three workarounds is less
inconvenient for you. This would be my preferred ordering, from most to
least convenient:

1) connect via SBS (tip: you'll find that suspending the computer
instead of shutting it down when you're not listening makes this more
feasible),
2) refuse the firmware upgrade/downgrade by using the left arrow on the
IR remote (I think a quick left-to-right swipe on the Touch's
touchscreen also works),
3) switch between mysb.com and SBS, and live with firmware
upgrade/downgrade shuffle.

When things get back to something resembling normal then you can resume
switching between SBS and mysb without doing the firmware dance.

I think the responsible thing to have done here was to issue 7.6 as a
beta if at all with attendant risks of harm (e.g. glitches and
permanent incompatibility with MySB.com) rather than prompting the user
to upgrade without such a warning. I am happy to decide to assume the
risk when I am informed what the risk is. This is an elementary
concept in law. When a car leaves the showroom floor, don't you expect
forward and reverse gears to work and that once shifted to reverse you
are stuck there? Would you have bought that car knowing this would
occur or be pissed that the manufacturer never adequately tested the
product before sale?

Agree, that the responsible thing was to offer a Beta Version. However,
Software companies are not as responsible as Car Companies (Read -
Liable for Lawsuits),

With that said, I also never buy a car that has been re-designed in its
first Model Year. I let others get the bugs out before I buy.

publicly available for users to download, test, use, delete, report
bugs, etc. Those following the 7.6 developments were generally
surprised to see that 7.6 was being released with so many unresolved
bugs (see the Beta forum for a sampling). I agree, even though 7.6 has
been working fine for me for some time now. Most users don't want to be
beta testers, and from the reports I'm seeing from both newbies and
experienced users, it's still only beta quality in far too many
environments.

I suspected this would be the next issue people would start to report.

I'm not sure there is an easy fix, you can refuse the downgrade/upgrade
when prompted for it by holding left arrow of IR remote for a few
seconds. However, I'm not sure the 7.5 firmware will work good towards
7.6 MySB and I'm not sure the 7.6 firmware will work good towards a
7.5.5 SBS. It might work, but I think there are some protocol changes
between 7.5 and 7.6, so it might also not work at all.

If you have the time, it would be great if you could post about these
problems also in the official support forum, so the Logitech support
staff gets aware of it and doesn't recommend all users to downgrade to
7.5.5 so they will get these issues instead. The official support forum
can be found here:

The Logitech support staff doesn't monitor this community forum, they
only read in the official support forum.
