What are you running LMS on ?

An easy check regarding readability is to try to browse down in the
folder structure on the drive while you are settng it up for use in LMS
if you cant even see any subfolders , this suggest some permission issue
?

Have you put the files in a folder titled "My Music"?
The first time I tried using a USB stick my Touch did nothing until I
moved all the various folders into a My Music folder.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] USB Problems

2017-12-27 Thread toby10

Very old info but I'm sure most is still relevant:

Touch and USB / SD Troubleshooting & best practices for best
performance

USB or SD card devices

- Check the formatting of the device, Touch supported formats: FAT16,
FAT32, NTFS, ext2, ext3
- Touch can only see/use a single partition, format as a single
partition, or use only the first partition for all relevant music files
- Remove any included USB/SD device “utilities” as these can cause
issues
- Make sure there is at least 10% free space (20% even better)
- Remove any non-music related files (videos, documents, programs,
pictures, data, etc…)
- Or, if removing such files is not an option, place a . (dot) in front
of folders that are not music related (folders not containing music
files, album art, playlists). A simple (dot) in front of a folder means
that TinySBS will ignore these and (hopefully) greatly speed up scan
times.
- Attach device directly to your computer and run basic maintenance
utilities (disk cleanup, error checking, defrag)
- Storage unit must be writable (Touch’s server must install files and
be able to write to these files)
- Quick Test: Place a small, single folder of music on the device for
initial testing (why have it scanning for hours if it isn’t going to
complete the scan)

USB HD

- Try an external USB power source, HD power supply or a powered USB
hub. (Touch may not have enough bus power to power the USB HD)
- Try a different USB cable
- HD Sleep mode can cause issues (may have to completely rescan HD every
time it “wakes”)
- If you turn OFF Touch or HD, or unplug HD, Touch must completely
rescan the entire HD

Very useful tutorial & configuration ideas to get the most out of the
very limited Touch inbuilt server:

Stick a few .mp3 or .flacs on the drive, does the Touch see them.

Is the USB drive a portable, or is it powered, The Touch's USB power out
is barely sufficient to power a USB drive.

Put some .wav's on a USB stick or SD card, do they get seem?

[SlimDevices: Touch] USB Problems

2017-12-26 Thread johnreid

I am running LMS 7.9 and have an USB 2.0 drive with some .wav files.
LMS sees the USB drive; but it does not see anything on it - none of the
.wav files show up and that is all that is on the drive.
I have formatted the drive again and copies the files anew to no avail.
The instruction guide provides no info on how the USB is to work but
refers to download the "Squeezebox Touch Feature Guide" but I am unable
to locate it on this site.
I have no problem playing music on the system from my computer in My
Music.
Does the "Feature Guide" exist and if so where can I find it?
Does anyone have an answer to why the USB is not being picked up by the
Touch?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] USB Problems

2011-05-23 Thread JohnSwenson

Yes the Touch can read NTFS quite nicely.

Common issues with USB drives can get grouped into a couple categories:

not simple drive

disconnecting

Many USB drives have special features which are designed to work with
Windows. They contain programs that are run when you plug them into a
machine running Windows. These programs enable various features of the
drive. The problem is the Touch does not run Windows (it runs Linux)
thus this windows code cannot run which puts the drive in a strange
state with parts of its functionality not working. Its best NOT to use
a drive with any special features (like passwords, encryption, locked
areas, virtual CDs etc)

The other common problem is disconnecting. For some reason many drives
will disconnect themselves from the host at various times. In many
cases this is part of the power saving strategy. If a drive just
spins down a disk, but leaves the connection open this is fine. But
some don't stop there and power down the connection as well. In many of
these drives there is a way to adjust these power settings, but you will
usually have to access them from a PC. (those Windows specific special
features again)

The Touch is much more sensitive to disconnections than other systems
because it performs a file scan every time the drive connects. (to see
if you have added any new music) Thus a disconnect and reconnect has a
much bigger impact than just spinning up the disk.

[SlimDevices: Touch] USB Problems

2011-05-22 Thread morocco1

I have owned my Squeezebox Touch for less than a week and cannot begin
to describe my frustration and disappointment with the product. I have
had nothing but problems with it since day one.

I am running it attached to a Buffalo Ministation 500GB USB-powered
HDD. When first attaching it to the Touch, it took about 2 hours to
locate and index all of my 22,000-odd tracks, around 80GB worth of
music.

The first issue I had was that the unit was splitting single albums
into multiple albums, which although annoying and time-consuming to
solve, was easy enough to fix using MP3Tag. Although it resulted in
another 2 hours of downtime while it re-scanned the USB to index the
files all over again.

Things were working well enough though, I had listened to a few albums
and was enjoying the unit, I found the responsiveness great, and the
integration with the official SB Android app on my Desire HD worked
flawlessly... then this morning, when attaching the USB drive (I
disconnect when not using to save wear on the disk), it took around 5
minutes to start SBS, played one file, after spending about 10 minutes
loading the album, and then lost connection to the USB. Local music
service has encountered a problem or words to that effect, was the
error message. No indication of what the problem was, so I'm trying to
fix it blindfolded. It has lost connection on a number of occasions
throughout the week - why does this happen when it is connected to a
local USB drive?!

This has now occurred four or five times today, trying to play the same
album. The next MAJOR issue is that the server has just reset itself and
begins discovering files... why has it lost all of the indexed files?!
I am now facing another 2 hours of downtime while I wait for the unit to
rediscover all of the music, before I can begin thinking about how to
fix it.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can go about making the device
work as intended? If I have left out any pertinent info I am happy to
provide.

Other problems I have had... minor issues... which I wouldn't mind some
guidance with...

1. Is there any way to group albums by Album Artist rather than Artist?
For example, I would like albums by Method Man Redman to be grouped
under the album artist Method Man rather than as two separate
artists.
2. The Android app doesn't seem to be reading from the internal SBS - I
have added a few new albums which show up on the touch device, but not
on the mobile app - any ideas? Although to be honest, I'd happily take
suggestions for an alternative app.

Sorry for the essay and thanks in advance.

It is POSSIBLE the USB on the Touch does not have quiet enough power for
your HD causing weird stuff to happen. It is always best to get an
external HD which has its own power supply...

Hi Joe

Thanks for your response.

I have a powered USB drive, which contains the same files as the
USB-powered one, it was just for physical space reasons that I was not
using that... maybe I will try the powered drive with the touch later
and see if this makes a difference.

There is one possible problem I can foresee with this though, the
powered drive is formatted in NTFS - can the Squeezebox Touch read this
format?

From official specs, yes. How reliable vs FAT I cannot say.
