Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] direct connection of ssd
Its worth mentioning that you can easily transcode wav to flac and vice versa no actuall need to rerip. However if you have no tags at all ( ripping to wav with old windows media player for example ). There are probably mass tagging possibilities in some software . So rerip can be faster if the tags are totally wrecked rather than manually editing. I use puddletag it can search musicbrains just on album title and populate all tags this is also an option, there must be other software that does this to. Another piont : one big feature with the LMS architecture is to actually *not* having the server in the Hifi room. Its networked dump the whole thing in a closet or basement away from everything plug it in on your home network. The player can sit in the Hifi also conected to your network. Done the above? Now restart your SB Touch, go through networking and point it at the servers Static Ip address if it doesn't find it automatically. Got an iPhone - get iPeng to control the whole thing. Note. The Pi can also be a player. In fact it is by default. Up to you whether you use it as such. If no need then switch off squeezelite on it. My LMS runs on a Raspberry Pi running piCorePlayer. It has a cable connection to the router and is powered via a USB cable. The NAS holds the music files and is also wired to the router. All my players connect wirelessly via the router. The Pi is housed in a small basic black case. No problems with performance or overheating. Ripping CDs Rip using dbPoweramp to FLAC - the main advantage is file size but also has better tagging ability Add ReplayGain from the outset - if you don't somewhere along the line you'll wish you had Cover Art - don't add to individual tracks unless you want to play in things other than LMS. Instead save cover to folder.jpg in the same folder. dbPoweramp can do this. Save covers at 500x500 minimum. Use mp3tag to check and correct tagging errors. There will be some no matter what. The Pi Download and burn piCorePlayer (standard) to a suitable SD card Stick it in the Pi with a monitor attached (temporarily) Connect the Pi3 to your router by ethernet. Forget any idea of doing this wirelessly. Boot the Pi - see its IP address on screen Use a PC to connect to http://ipaddress Give the Pi a static Ip Enable Beta mode Expand the SD card Install LMS Reboot Reconnect to http://staticipaddress - all good ? Get rid of monitor. LMS is installed but you now need to connect the SSD, give it a mount point and check that it connects on reboot Reboot until SSD is visible Open another browser window to http://staticipaddress:9000 Configure LMS VB2.4 STORAGE *QNAP TS419P (NFS) Living Room* - Joggler & SB3 -> Onkyo TS606 -> Celestion F20s *Office* - Pi3+Sreen -> Sony TAFE320 -> Celestion F10s / Pi2+DAC & SB3 -> Onkyo CRN755 -> Wharfedale Modus Cubes *Dining Room* -> SB Boom *Kitchen* -> UE Radio (upgraded to SB Radio) *Bedroom (Bedside)* - Pi2+DAC ->ToppingTP21 ->AKG Headphones *Bedroom (TV)* - SB Touch ->Sherwood AVR ->Mordaunt Short M10s Everything controlled by iPeng d6jg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44051 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109528 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Here is the pi I'm running at the moment, stuck behind the telly. 25733 A case might help, and I do have some, somewhere. On the raspberry forum some folk complain about over-heating, but it's unlikely to be a problem with running LMS and I have never experienced it. I would suggest just using the SBT to start with, see how you get on with it, then decide how you want to expand/change the system. Some good advice from Shozzer. I don't bother much with the music I have ripped (just a change of taste/use and preference). When I did the ripping I used dBpoweramp and ripped to flac and wav at the same time (the wav was for a backup, you will need a backup!). As you have already some files prepared, I would just use those to begin with, get the equipment set up and operating to your satisfaction, then explore the various options and decide with which one you wish to proceed. Just go "softly,softly..cachee..." to begin with...or not ronnie +---+ |Filename: aaapi.jpg| |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=25733| +---+ Man in a van's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43627 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109528 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

FLAC is lossless but compressed so produces smaller files than WAV. In addition to file size, FLAC is more versatile for tagging. MP3tag is great for making changes to tags after a disc has been ripped. I use it heavily to tidy up tags. It allows for consistency across tracks (and albums too). Composers are searchable in LMS. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] direct connection of ssd
Thanks Shozzer I have a number of CDs already ripped to WAV at CD quality. I thought this would give the best sound quality and also be quickest as it does not need any conversion/encoding or compression. Am I missing something (other than file size). I would be happy to re-rip to FLAC if it offers advantages - particularly sound quality. I already use dBpoweramp and this seems to do a reasonable job of tagging most of the time. What does MP3tag "bring to the party"? Oh - and it will be mainly pop/rock with just a smattering of classical so having the composer will probably be sufficient for my needs. Is this a searchable tag with LMS? Thanks again. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] direct connection of ssd
My advice after ripping my CD collection is to rip to FLAC from the outset. I started ripping to MP3 and am going back and re-ripping when I have time. If tagging is your passion then you will probably find that having done the job once you will end up tweaking later on as your tastes/preferences change. I never thought I was a pedant until I got into tagging! :D The sad thing, of course, is that only I appreciate it - the rest of the family couldn't really care! What sort of music are you ripping - classical or other? Classical brings its own complications. You need to decide how you want the music to look in the library and then work out how you can achieve this via tags. Automated tagging is great but there are limitations - the tagging may be incorrect or not as you want it. Use ripping software such as dBpoweramp and learn how to use MP3tag (this works with other formats including FLAC). You can cut and paste album information from the internet (the record companies have a wealth of information) into a text file and when you ae happy with this then you can upload the file into MP3tag. Use Google to search for album art (if you use Chrome then you have the ability to search for different sizes). Failing that, scan your CD covers, resize them to your desired size and add these to your tags. Check the Ripping and Tagging forum for further help and advice. Have fun! Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] direct connection of ssd
All great information which I think has me nearly all the way there. OK - just to underline my ignorance again: If I understand correctly it is not possible to connect the Pi directly to the SBT? I should be able to connect the Pi with an ethernet cable to my router but the geography of my house is such that the SBT would have to connect over wi-fi. The SBT will be close to the wi-fi router and I would expect a strong and stable signal between them. Is this likely to impact performance and in particular sound quality? Finally, I hope! - I have approx. 500 CDs to rip and would like to optimise the audio quality. I would like the album art to be available on the SBT and for tracks from a CD to play in the correct order. I would also like to maximise the search capabilities of the LMS. So - what file format should I use, what ID tags should I include with what syntax and how should I set-up the folder structure? Slightly off-topic - My research has led me to this: https://geekworm.com/products/raspberry-pi-x820-v3-0-ssd-hdd-sata-storage-board-matching-metal-case-enclosure-power-control-switch-cooling-fan-kit which would appear to be a neat solution to the Pi and SSD setup. Do you think the fan is necessary? Or do you have any similar suggestions? And this seems to negate the use of the SBT altogether: https://shop.max2play.com/en/raspberry-pi-2-bundle-7-display.html Any thoughts? Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] direct connection of ssd
Alan piCorePlayer OS and LMS on the sd card of the raspberrypi. SSD usb drive connected to raspberrypi (put your music files on it) raspberrypi connected to the shinbone, connected to the router (via Ethernet is preferable to wireless, I use flat cable) SBT connected to amp via phono outputs and to network via Ethernet or wireless. You can use a switch for both the pi and SBT. LMS controlled by computer, or app on tablet or 'phone. Use for a while (at least one or two 2 months) then decide if you want to change to either a dac-hat for the raspberrypi or use usb/spdif (on a pi-hat). Suggested equipment: raspberrypi 3B+ Official raspberry power supply Good quality, fast micro sd card, something like Sandisk Ultra (beware of fakes). Size of card: 8gb, if you can find one. ronnie It is possible to use the usb drive to both boot the pi and store your music files but KISS. grasshopper:p Man in a van's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43627 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109528 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Many thanks to all who have replied. You've pretty much convinced me to go down the Pi route. Excuse my complete ignorance - a quick clarification then: I connect my SSD to a USB port on the Pi and connect the Pi USB to USB on the Touch? I see there is an add-in DAC available for the Pi. I concur. You could try connecting an SSD but the cut down LMS that resides inside a Touch is a) very cut down and b) very old You would be better off as Ronnie says getting yourself a Pi3, sticking piCorePlayer on it and stick the SSD into that. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] direct connection of ssd
Ah, Alan, one day the lazy will inherit the world.:p https://www.logitech.com/assets/30072/documentation.pdf It is possible, but far better to buy a raspberrypi 3B+ and install piCoreplayer with LMS and use the SBTouch with that. Connect the SSD to the SBT and you have a new relation called Fanny. You can read how-to-do-it on the picoreplayer website. Remember google is a friend and come back when you are really stuck (or sooner). :) While your waiting for delivery, why not install LMS on your computer and play about with it. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] direct connection of ssd
Hi Man In A Van - and any others I may have left bemused! NB - I am now a registered user so login name has changed from Alan Clements to BigEars64 I am expecting a delivery of a Squeezebox Touch. I understand that in theory it is possible to connect a hard drive via the USB port and utilise the internal server to access the music on this drive. I have a spare SSD which I would like to utilise for this purpose. Main reasons being - my PC is in the same room as my music system and I do not want to have to leave this on as although quiet it is not silent and I would find this intrusive. I am aware that the LMS is considered by many to be inadequate / not up to the task - but some seem to have had success. To maximise my chances and minimise the trial and (potentially expensive) error phase I'd basically like to copy someone else's setup. Lazy I know! Thank you for taking the time to respond.
