This needs design input - some platforms show the app in the list of
'installed apps' (eg iOS home screen) but have a progress bar or some
other badge to show that it's not ready to run yet.

This affects both unity8 and the scope because there will be
additional state for the scope to send to the dash in the apps list

Our camera app supports the flash, and fires it while taking a picture

underexposed, to the point where almost the entire image is black.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Run the camera app.
  2. Take a picture with flash off.
  3. Turn the flash setting on and take a picture of the same scene again.
  4. Go to the gallery app to view the results.

Expected results: The picture with flash should appear brighter (or,
at least, appear how most with-flash pictures look).

Actual results: The picture with flash is almost completely black,
with only a few dim details in the brightest parts of the image.

Bug description:
The issue did not exist on 14.04(r5) or 13.10(r100). I was even proud of this
little feature :P :D
When any online music is opened in the browser from the music lens, the music
plays. But when a full swipe to the homescreen is done, or another app is
brought to the foreground with the right swipe, the music abruptly stops. on
bringing the browser app to the foreground, the music continues to play from
where it stopped. Reproduced on soundcloud only. I dont think any other music
site works in touch right now.
On the earlier build of Trusty and saucy, i couldnt reproduce this issue.
Atleast a full swipe in those builds did not stop the music.

It is waking up every 4 seconds on a poll() and doing two
inotify_add_watch() calls on paths that don't exist, which wastes
power on devices such as phones, e.g:

  Inotify watches added:
PID Process Rate/Sec File
2102 telephony-service-in0.250 /usr/local/share/applications
2102 telephony-service-in0.250 /usr/share/ubuntu-touch/applications

This can be observed with strace:

  poll([{fd=7, events=POLLIN}, {fd=8, events=POLLIN}], 2, 3984) = 0 (Timeout)
  clock_gettime(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, {10864, 224048956}) = 0

= -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

  poll([{fd=7, events=POLLIN}, {fd=8, events=POLLIN}], 2, 3987) = 0 (Timeout)

= -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
  clock_gettime(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, {10868, 233998598}) = 0

Can these redundant polling checks be reduced or removed? Polling
every 4 seconds is a little bit heavy handed IMHO.

Adding Gershayim (U+05F4) - Often used (for acronyms mostly).

I would push apostrophe and quotes down the hierarchy in favor of

Bug description:
When being invoked in content picking mode, we are allowing pictures
and videos to be displayed and selected.

We need to honor the content type that is being requested. If only
ContentType.Pictures is being requested we should only show pictures
or allow selection of Pictures. Same is true with only
  ContentType.Videos being requested.

  Steps to reproduce:
  - open messaging-app
  - create a new message
  - click camera icon, which will invoke gallery app in picking mode

  Expected results:
gallery should only display Pictures or allow Pictures to be selected

  Actual results:
gallery allows Pictures or videos to be selected

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1356176] [NEW] only sims that are populated should be displayed

2014-08-12 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

krillin
build 185
I have a dual sim phone but only one sim installed. messaging-app and
address-book show options for both sims, including prompting for which to use
as a default the first time the app is run.

Should not show any of the dual sim options in those apps if only one
sim is installed even if there are two physical slots.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1236290] Re: [gesture recognition] Implement improved edge gesture detection to reduce false positives and pass non-edge gestures through to the focused app

Title:
[gesture recognition] Implement improved edge gesture detection to
reduce false positives and pass non-edge gestures through to the
  focused app

Status in Ubuntu UX bugs:
  Fix Committed
Status in The Unity 8 shell:
  Confirmed
Status in “unity8” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
(from section 3.1 Edge drag gestures in the Unity Gesture UI
  Guidelines doc https://docs.google.com/a/canonical.com/document/d
  /1WJF8YdphrorvHiB5FFVxsitL5Pz-tpZ5-kmtzoD3tFc/edit )

These are Unity level gestures that allow the user to reveal and
interact with shell elements like the Launcher. To reduce the number
of false positives, edge drag gestures are only triggered when a user
drags their finger over the edge of the screen and the drag does not
  have following charastics:

  - If the initial velocity is zero or close to zero an edge gesture is
not triggered. The gesture is passed through to the app. This is
because the intended gesture is probably a tap or a hold

  - If the initial velocity is high an edge gesture is not triggered.
The gesture is passed through to the app. This is because the
intended gesture is probably a flick

  - If the initial direction is not close to perpendicular to the edge
an edge gesture is not triggered. This is because the intended
gesture may be a vertical drag.

  - If at the gesture’s initiation the user has more than one finger
touching the screen an edge gesture is not triggered. This is because
the intended gesture may be a pinch, spread or rotate.

  ---
  Desired resolution:

  - Implement the heuristics defined above for detecting edge gestures
to reduce the incidence of false positives.

  - The exact values for these heuristics should be easily modifiable so
that we can experiment with different values to find the optimal
  values.

  - Gestures performed on the edge of the screen when are no longer
detected as edge gestures due to the above heuristics should be passed
through to the currently focused app.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1357155] [NEW] pictures taken by camera don't show up in gallery first time

2014-08-14 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

build 189
need to wipe your device
launch gallery (note, no Pictures/camera subdir exists yet
launch camera
take some pictures
go to gallery

Expected results:
pictures taken should show up in gallery

Actual results:
pictures don't show up in gallery until you kill it and restart. After you do
that once it works from then on.

I believe the problem is the ~/Pictures/camera sudirectory does not
exist when gallery is started, so it doesn't monitor it. Gallery should
be fixed to monitor newly created directories and dynamically add
pictures when they are added to the subdirectories

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1357438] Re: webapps url dispath on launch if that was the last thing they did before being lifecycle killed

2014-08-15 Thread Bill Filler
I'm seeing this too on krillin build 191. To reproduce:

1) Open facebook
2) Click on a link in someone's post that opens an external url
3) verify the external url is opened in webbrowser app in a new tab
4) switch back to Facebook app

Expected Results:
- Facebook webapp displays the page it was on last

Actual Results:
- facebook webapp is re-launched from lifecycle manager
- it immediately redirects to browser, opening the link from Step 2 above
- browser is displayed
- swiping between open apps to find Facebook, it just shows a blank white page
with no way to get out.
- Stuck in loop now, no way to use Facebook

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1357464] [NEW] restoring browser shows blank tab previews

2014-08-15 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

after closing the browser and reopening, the open tabs are now restored
which is great. However when viewing the tabs page, all of the previews
are blank which makes for a pretty ugly looking page.

Can we persist these preview images, same as we're doing for the favicon images
so that we can restore them when the app starts?
If not, we should minimally show something in the tab preview like Click to
open or some other graphic

Also seeing the following issue with indicator-network:
- turn SIM pin on in the system settings

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1376495] Re: autopilot3 run camera_app.tests.test_zoom.TestCameraZoom.test_slider_zoom_out crashes camera-app

2014-10-11 Thread Bill Filler
I believe this is just a crash with the test. Cannot be reproduced by hand.
@kaleo
please take over this branch from omer which seems to fix the broken test (and
a few others)
https://code.launchpad.net/~canonical-platform-qa/camera-app/lp1366825_fix_zoom/+merge/233725

And lets land these test fixes and this problem should go away. Of
course first look at the crash and make sure it's not an actual problem
with the underlying code.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1377996] Re: [phone-app] is freezing on active call screen

2014-10-14 Thread Bill Filler
I cannot reproduce this. If you get it into this state, please try to
swipe the dialer app into the background and then into the foreground
again and see if you can interact with it. Could be caused by the shell
bug which makes the app inactive.

  2. accept the call from the incoming snap decision
  3. wait until active call screen appears
  4. navigate back to the keypad
  5. tap the now green indicator bar to return back to call
  6. tap the tone dial in call controls

  7. Actual result: One the first, 2nd or 3rd tap the screen is frozen. Even if
you hang up the phone you called from, the screen remains. Sometimes the screen
freezes when you try to navigate back and forth from keypad to active call. Try
several different ways.
A few times, I was able to hang up the phone I was calling from but the
active call screen stayed on the device. The only way to make the phone app
work again was to force quit it.

As an alternative route. Try to call the phone when the phone-app is
running. Accept the call and wait until the active call screen
appears. Try to interact with the tone dial icon in the call controls.
I was able to reproduce the freeze this way as well.

Bug description:
While testing recent MMS changes that landed recently, I discovered
that an incoming MMS message doesn't cause the screen to be turned on,
whereas an incoming SMS does wake the screen. Note an alert sound is
still played for incoming MMS messages, and the messaging-indicator
does indicate that a new message has been received.

This is due to the fact that powerd ( see
  powerd.cpp::on_ofono_messagemanager_signal() ) listens on ofono's
ModemManager interface for IncomingMessage or ImmediateMessage
signals, and these signal are never generated for incoming MMS
messages as they're received as PushNotifications and handled
  externally to ofono by nuntium.

This was discovered running image #u144 on mako.

After a moment with the phone, the camera-app takes up to one minute
to load. Immediately after a reboot it just takes a few seconds.

When it happens the spinner is spinning for a few seconds, then
everything hangs (UI stops responding, launcher, panel and switcher
doesn't work) and after one minute or so the camera eventually starts
and shell is back to normal operations.

When it starts happening once, only a reboot makes the camera behave

After a moment with the phone, the camera-app takes up to one minute
to load. Immediately after a reboot it just takes a few seconds.

When it happens the spinner is spinning for a few seconds, then
everything hangs (UI stops responding, launcher, panel and switcher
doesn't work) and after one minute or so the camera eventually starts
and shell is back to normal operations.

When it starts happening once, only a reboot makes the camera behave
  properly again.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1378827] Re: incoming call snap decision should prevent edge interaction on greeter

2014-10-22 Thread Bill Filler
This is what was discussed in the design meeting today. The incoming
call notification (and other notificaitons) that occur on the lock
screen should be modal.

** Changed in: unity-notifications (Ubuntu)
Assignee: (unassigned) = Mirco Müller (macslow)

** Also affects: ubuntu-ux
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

incoming call snap decision should prevent edge interaction on greeter

Status in Ubuntu UX bugs:

Status in “unity-notifications” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  rtm build 88 on krillin

  Steps to reproduce:
  - unlock the phone
  - call the phone
  - when the incoming call snap decision is displayed, all access to the edges
is blocked and the dialog is modal, as it should be
  - now lock the phone
  - call the phone

  Expected results:
  - all access to the edges is blocked and the snap-decision is modal, as is
the case when the phone is unlocked

  Actual results:
  - the launcher can be swiped and the top panel can be interacted with. the
edges are not blocked as they should be

This is related to #1358343 [notifications] [design] too easy to
answer a call by accident. We need this to be fixed so users don't
inadavertently interact with the indicators or launcher when the phone
is there pocket and an incoming call arrives. This fix, coupled with
the fix to the snap decision to have a swipe to answer would prevent
most of the problems that can occur.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1384764] [NEW] pressing power button during incoming call should silence the ring

2014-10-23 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

discussed with design at DC sprint.

Expected behavior:
- when incoming call, if the user presses the power button it should silence
the ringer, but leave the screen on and the notification visible. This is how

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1384764] Re: pressing power button during incoming call should silence the ring

2014-10-23 Thread Bill Filler
currently the telephony-service is responsible for playing the ringtone
and it would need some kind of notification from unity to know when the
power button was pressed. Alternatively, there is discussion of moving
the play back of ringtones to the notification itself, so if this
happens it will need to handle the silencing.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1384814] Re: lock screen not honoring timeout setting from system-settings

2014-10-23 Thread Bill Filler
Adding design to get feedback for what intended behavior is.

Also, if I set lock time to 10 minutes the phone should still blank the
screen after a shorter time (30 seconds? or other default) but it seems
to just dim the screen in this case.

Title:
Occasional hang in unity 8 dash on the phone

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress
Status in “unity8” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
The dash is sometimes hanging on the phone.

  See the attached backtrace.

The issue is as follows: we are maintaining a client-side tree of all
NetworkManager devices. When we see that a new device has been added,
we query its properties in order to build our local proxy. Doing this
means that we are making QtDBus calls from a signal handler. Due to a
bug in QtDBus this is not safe.

libdbus-1 has a recursive lock on its DBusConnection. When the signal
arrives, the lock is acquired and the sginal handler is run. The
signal handler can make DBus calls (which also require the lock)
because the lock is recursive. QtDBus also has a lock that is always
acquired before the libdbus-1 connection lock is acquired.

Unfortuntaely, the QtDBus lock is not acquired in the case of the
incoming call from DBus -- only the DBus lock is.

If another thread tries to do an unrelated DBus call meanwhile, it will
acquire the QtDBus lock first and then the DBus lock (which is held because of
the signal that arrived). Once the signal handler gets to the point of wanting
to make a DBus call (in order to query the properties of the just-added network
device) it will attempt to acquire the QtDBus lock. This is a lock-inversion
deadlock.

There are at least three bugs here:

  1) QtDBus should be fixed in order to avoid this sort of lock
inversion problem. Even if we fix this one situation, it seems quite
likely that issues like this will arise again.

  2) QNetworkManager should avoid the issue in QtDBus until such a time
as it is fixed. This could be done by dispatching to a worker thread
on receipt of signals so that the queries are done in a fresh call
stack (without the libdbus-1 lock held).

  3) Apparently the only reason we are using NetworkManager at all is in
order to know if we are on a 3G connection or not (in order to avoid
too much data charges). This would be much easier to do if
NetworkManager provided a property that we could watch directly
instead of bringing up an entire tree of objects in order to answer a
very simple question. To that end I've filed
  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=739080 which we can
  hopefully get addressed relatively quickly.

I consider 3) to be the real fix as far as we are concerned, but we should
probably ensure that the Qt people know about 1) and 2). Either of those could
function as a workaround for us in the meantime, but the idea that we are
creating this complex object tree to answer a simple question is ridiculous, so
we should really fix that directly.

Marking this as critical because all phones have a way to silence the
call without rejecting it (which causes it to go immediately to voice
mail). Pretty basic feature that we should have.

dialer-app unusable after scrolling Recents view

Status in Dialer app for Ubuntu Touch:
  Fix Released
Status in “dialer-app” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in “dialer-app” package in Ubuntu RTM:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  built 114 rtm

  Steps to reproduce:
  - open phone app
  - go to Recents page by swiping from bottom edge
  - scroll the list so the header disappears
  - click on a number to call back

  Expected results:
keypad view shown with number populated

  Actual results:
keybad view shown with blank header and bottom edge and app is unresponsive

This is caused by an SDK issue we think, that is being tracked here:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-ui-toolkit/+bug/1376502

Until that is fixed a workaround is being investigated in the dialer-
  app

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1368492] Re: crash opening image file

2014-09-24 Thread Bill Filler
It still crashes on the latest rtm-proposed image (59) on krillin.
libthumbnailer0:armhf 1.2+14.10.20140916~rtm-0ubuntu1

It's very easy to reproduce.
Load up your gallery with a bunch of photos.
Open gallery
While you see thumbnails loading (i.e. spinners everywhere), as soon as one
thumbnail becomes visible click on it to open, and bang it crashes. Looks to be
the same dump as the previous crashes. The issue seems to happen when you try
to open a thumbnail while others are loading possibly.
