I've asked them why not using Pootle, they replied it's hard to maintain and not user friendly. In the galician translation we have an initiative from our government and they chose Entrans because in that times Pootle wasn't functional. They have to maintain the code and also to extend it. After petitions from the volunteers for changing to Pootle they finally closed the site. I agree that Pootle is ugly, user unfriendly... Anyhow, I think the big point here is held in the backstage, because Django will make it easier enhancing current functionalities as well as adding new ones.
