Re: [Trisquel-users] Libre-software desktop
Xeon doesn't ship with onboard graphics unit and P67-chipset motherboards do not have VGA pins. You'd need an external card in these cases.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why did you switch (or use) Free Software?
I took my first steps away form proprietary software, with open source Ubuntu, back in highschool. I was just looking for a new experience then. It was like trying to ride my bike further from home than I had been before, or exploring a part of town that I hadn't been to before. Nothing ideological. I don't think I knew what free software was at the time. I don't even think I cared very much that Ubuntu/etc were open source and not free. I learned about Richard Stallman and his views, slowly, over the years. Mostly through his articles, articles about him, web forums, and YouTube (the last one is a little blasphemous, I know -- sorry). The more I learned, the more I supported Mr. Stallman. Then, late last year, my laptop broke. I did a lot of research about free software and laptops since January. I bought a free-software compatible laptop last month; I use Trisquel with it. It's the first time I've used a fully free OS as my primary (and only) OS.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Why did you switch (or use) Free Software?
Stallman didn't "invent" user rights. There was a time, in the early days of computing, when free software was just called software.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Libre-software desktop
1. Motherboards which take Intel CPUs do not need a separate graphics card. 2. I don't believe the nVidia GT210 is a good choice at the moment. There is little or no support from the free software nouveau driver. 3. DVD drives usually need to be set the first time you insert a commercial DVD (video disc) with a set region. Any DVD drive should be OK if I'm not mistaken.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Should the FSF financially support Trisquel?
I think there may be a decent chance that the funds/developer shortage Trisquel has now may be solved within the year. Even though there is quite a ways to go... I think it would be great if the FSF helped with a fund raising campaign for Trisquel. I'm not so sure if the FSF needs to actually fund it though. I think Trisquel can be self-moving. It's just going to take some time to get to that point.
Re: [Trisquel-users] can I watch DVDs hired from shop or borrowed from library
Free software wise it isn't a problem and you can install the software needed with/on Trisquel as described elsewhere. The problem is/was digital restrictions. I forget if DVD boxes advertise this (I think they do) although most commercial DVDs use CSS (digital restrictions). The problem is with the US law. In the US thee is something called the digital millennium copyright act. It makes bypassing digital restrictions or informing others how to do so illegal. I tend to suggest avoiding technlogy with digital restrictions. Be it online entertainment that use things like silverlight/adobe flash or CPUs that are enablers. It's less of an issue because the technology is broken in this case although it probably shouldn't matter. You should probably still avoid it. We don't ship blu-ray drives for a few reasons. One the technology is dead. But two because we (I'm talking about ThinkPenguin) would rather not endorse digital restrictions. Especially when the technology doesn't work well on GNU/Linux or work well with free software.
[Trisquel-users] This Application quit unexpectedly
When using different programs (such as OpenShot) a box pops up that says the application I was using quit unexpectedly. I dismiss the dialog box, and the program keeps working, like it was before. Why is this happening?

Approx. Dimensions of the laptop are: 374(W) x 252(D) x 14 ~ 25.4(H)mm (Height excluded battery area). Or 14.73" x 9.92" x .55" ~ 1" in inches.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Penguin GNU / Linux Laptop /w 1920x1080 Matte Screen Now Shipping
It's not happening at the moment even though I'd love to do it. Stickers are expensive and I can't offset the risk easily with these. The tux keyboard sticker was a bit less risky as there are millions of GNU/Linux users who recognize the character. We do have powered by GNU case badges though: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/powered-gnu-aluminium-case-badge These were less risky as I could merge the risk of them not selling with other case badges. I'm not sure if we are going to break even with this stuff as a whole as it is. Not everything is selling that terribly well even though we get quite a few orders every day. The problem is we have not correctly guestimated the demand for each sticker. It could take many years to break even if we ever do.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Penguin GNU / Linux Laptop /w 1920x1080 Matte Screen Now Shipping
1. No. We are just aiming for better support for Spanish at the moment. Things have been delayed as far as rolling out a new site go and all sorts of other stuff. Significantly delayed. Maybe 3-6 months... again. Very frustrating as we got 99.2% of the way there with the new site and are basically stating over. 2. I believe there is a total of about 21% in taxes which will be collected on delivery for India where laptops are concerned. I believe this is less than the norm as laptops are 'duty free'. Although there are duties and other taxes still which add up to 21%. The shipping cost depends on where you are in India although DHL usually runs 1-4 business days. The price varies a bit depending on where you are and the order itself. A heavier or at least larger laptop will cost more to ship. We do try to keep the size of the package down to reduce shipping while still maintaining sufficient protection to avoid damage. The risk is low though anyway. The shipping time can extend to about a week for some countries/remote areas too. One laptop to one location in NEW DELHI runs about $120 USD. For large cities in countries with more problematic shipping / customs conditions it runs around $130 USD usually. For instance: Japan, Germany, Italy, India. Less problematic countries like the Netherlands, UK, Spain, France, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, etc it tends to run about $70 USD.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Default Music App
I'm a convert to Trisquel from windows, and the one single thing I miss from windows is the foobar2000 music player, I'm not too big on rhythmbox. Clementine is the best alternative I've found, but I'd really like it if the folders in the "files" tab had the little arrows next to them, rather than just showing you the contents of one single folder at a time. It's a little thing, but it's frustrating that I can't find a single player that does that.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Antwort: Default Music App
So far, my favorite database-driven music player app is exaile.
[Trisquel-users] Antwort: Default Music App
I like music and am collecting records (at least a little amount of them). There are already really good audio players on GNU/Linux! Clementine as far Qt-interfaces go, gmusicbrowser and QuodLibet as far GTK-interfaces go. Clementine and gmusicbrowser are probably the best. There is also DeadBeef, a project to make a clone of Foobar2000 (probably the ultimate audio player, but proprietary and Windows only). DeadBeef is under the GPL and the aim seems to be a low memory footprint as well as having basically all features one can think of.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Unable to boot Trisquel 6.0 from GRUB
Heh; all of this about some "password" you don't know being needed to add nomodeset. I added nomodeset to mine with Trisquel 6 and never needed a password other than my own. For the recod it's easy to add nomodeset and no mystery password is needed. Step 1: Edit /etc/default/grub and add nomodeset to the line containing GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT You will probably need sudo for this and will be asked for a password but it's your own password. Once that's done run sudo update-grub and TA DA! Anyway, just to set the record straight that there's no mystery password required to add nomodeset to your GRUB configuration.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Should the FSF financially support Trisquel?
If I understand correctly, the FSF's "sponsorship" of gNewSense is limited to hosting only and being mentioned on gnu.org/distros.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Should the FSF financially support Trisquel?
I strongly doubt the FSF is *financially* supporting the gNewSense project. Do you have any reference? I consider the FSF had better pay some developers to work on the high priority projects. But financing RĂºben to work on Trisquel would be a good move too. :-)

Keep this in your inventory until I need a new laptop, and you have a guaranteed sale from me. That is one awesome machine. Three questions: I notice that between the Ctrl and Alt keys there's a key with some kind of design on it. What is that design? Is it equivalent to the Win key in function? Also, what are the dimensions of the laptop when shut? (The area on my desk isn't that big, and I still need room for my mouse and USB hub.)

Obviously, Rhytmbox has been choosen as the default Music player as it is very good project-wise. However, I've found this app called "Musique" (Google it) and it looks extraordinary, it allows you to browse through your collection way more smooth than iTunes or anything proprietary. [Trisquel-users] Antwort: Should the FSF financially support Trisquel?
One of the aims of the FSF is to "promote computer user freedom". They sponsor the GNU project, so it shouldn't surprise anyone if they sponsor another project as well. In my opinion, Trisquel is better than gNewSense in providing a fully free operating system. While the freedom aspect certainly is just the same, Trisquel is simply newer, more up to date and has a more polished GUI (the no-bullshit classical desktop is really great!). Also if you find a precompiled package on the internet, chances are, it's for Ubuntu. Those may sometimes be incompatible with Debian, so if you have an Ubuntu based distro, you'll be able to use more packages as a result. Asking FSF to sponsor Trisquel is pointless imho. Trisquel is still able to sustain itself, FSF wants to promote gNewSense (because of MIPS and because it uses the word GNU twice, gNewSense GNU/Linux). If Trisquel should become endangered, I am quite sure the FSF will help us out. I would really like to become a member, but I have no money because I have to repay a huge credit that I took for university. Next year I'll be getting a real job for full wage, so I'll be able to spare some money easily.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Should the FSF financially support Trisquel?
I am not sure if they should dedicate resources to a particular distro. After all, distro is just a flavour of their work. It's us, the users, that have to donate and help spread the message.
[Trisquel-users] Antwort: Libre-software desktop
If you want to go with an Intel motherboard, you should take the one with the most performant integrated GPU available. This would normally mean motherboards for the core i3-7 family. If it's too expensive, there is the GMA X4500 integrated graphicscard. To get it, you should look for mainboards with the following chipsets: G41 (lower end), G43, G45 (somewhat higher end), GS45, GM45, GM47 (can't find further information on those, they are supposed to have the X4500 however). I got a motherboard with G41 and everything works perfectly, ethernet, graphics, SATA controllers, onBoard audio (which is of high quality for onBoard audio btw). It supports either DDR2 or -3 memory and Core2 CPUs. G43 and G45 will have a PCIe slot of revision 2.0 (as opposed to 1.1 on G41). G45 will have a X4500HD integrated graphics, not sure how much more powerful it is, seems to be just a higher clocked version of the same thing.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Ubuntu Phone Announced Today
Google and Apple's combined dominance hasn't stopped others from trying, though. New mobile operating systems have been springing up like weeds in the last six months. RIM (now BlackBerry) finally launched the long-awaited BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry Z10 in an attempt to overhaul its image. @Danfun64: For a laptop beside LAN / WLAN the graphic chip used is a big challenge for a free GNU Linux distribution. I would try to avoid any AMD-based solution since they rely on non-free blobs. NVidia or Intel are the way to go although you should try to avoid combined graphic solutions (NVidia plus Intel) because they are more cumbersome. If everything fails for WLAN you could grab a pico adapter from ThinkPenguin here: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/catalog/wireless-networking-gnulinux
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libre-software desktop
Thanks for the input! It is realy helpful. @Chris: i think the motherboard (intel) does not have grafics. I guess that is why they mount a separate card. "You have a choice at check out though to have it ship from the UK." that is good to know, i had not figured that out. -Instead of the HD5450 ATI PCIe graphics card they can mount a nVidia GT210. -The ethernet port is built into the motherboard. -The DVD is not region specific. That means all is okay, right?
