[Trisquel-users] Wireless G USB Adapter arrived today!

2013-11-04 Thread longsong

I ordered a Penguin Wireless G USB Adapter for GNU / Linux on Oct 22 from

https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-g-usb-adapter

And it arrived today. It works out of box immediately.

There is only free software and free data in my laptop hard disk. I had to
use Ethernet cable to use internet. Now it is much better to have wireless
connection!

I'd like to share the joy with you!

[Trisquel-users] Where is the Abrowser's bookmarks file?

2013-11-04 Thread longsong

Any one knows where the Abrowser's bookmarks file is?

I'd like to use command line to backup and restore the bookmarks. So I need
to know which file contains the bookmarks.

Thanks!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Where is the Abrowser's bookmarks file?

I believe the file is ~/.mozilla/abrowser/YOUR-PROFILE/bookmarks.html

I suggest you test it by making a new profile (close all abrowser windows and
then abrowser -p) then again close all abrowser windows and copy that file
from old to the new profile and then go see if that did it.

It seems that it's not easy to use command line to backup bookmarks.

There are also newer X packages available, backported from Ubuntu qq and rr.
(Trisquel is based on pp)

You'll find the package names contain words quantal or raring. E.g.
xserver-xorg-video-vesa-lts-raring

Those can be tricky to install because the process can leave you without X at
all. Should that happen e.g. installing one of the Desktop Environments
(gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) should fix it if you can't figure out a more subtle way
of doing it.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Where is the Abrowser's bookmarks file?

2013-11-04 Thread Michał Masłowski
I think bookmarks.html doesn't keep important for my uses data like
tags. It also uses an HTML syntax specific for this use.

~/.mozilla/firefox/PROFILE/places.sqlite keeps bookmarks and history
with all their data. ("PROFILE" is a random-looking name, usually with
.default.) https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/The_Places_database
documents what it has, it's easy to get some data using SQLite if you
know SQL.

I have a big recfile (https://gnu.org/software/recutils/) with my
bookmarks exported from various browsers (via an ugly script
http://hg.mtjm.eu/forget-scripts/file/tip/forget-import-places.py),
stored in a Mercurial repository. I don't keep the bookmarks in the
browser after an export: it's slower and less convenient than browsing
(without rec-mode yet) the bookmarks recfile in Emacs.

Please help.

I installed the standard Trisquel x64 into my ATI desktop and the Cinnamon
version into my NVIDIA desktop. I am able to configure my DSL connection with
both but not the mobile broadband. This configures fine in standard Trisquel
but not Cinnamon. The modem is recognized by name and so is my country
provider and network plan but the configuration does not save in the network
manager window. It even dials out when I click auto broadband and the
connection details (Claro) also show correctly but it does not connect.

Any ideas please?

Re: [Trisquel-users] [OT] FOSS Skype Replacement

This program uses OpenJDK-7 which is free software. Hopefully (if all goes
well), I will make the program in such a way that you can only run it using
OpenJDK. I am to do this by taking the source code of OpenJDK and compiling
it in such a way that I can package it with my program to form an executable
which will be aimed for Windows machines (exe). This way people cannot run it
using non-free java atleast on windows. This won't really be an issue on
GNU/Linux machines because as far as I've seen most people use OpenJDK
anyways...

GNU Telephony and Wich SIP have been on my radar for quite some time... I
think it would be really nice to have them integrated into the program so
that the user can have an option between my networking framework or GNU's
take... The reasoning behind that being my framework is somewhat a fork of
other projects that have come about or has used idea's from other projects,
for instance TOR. While I've never used GNU's SIP, I think that it may be a
popular choise so I'll at it to my list :)

I think what I'm going to do is post segments of code that I think other
projects would benefit from and give them a link to my website which will
contain it. Perhaps if I find some time or feel like this is becoming a main
priority that I will jump onto other projects and try to submit my code more
though as it stands right now I'm having a lot of fun making my own software,
its become a really big part of my life and my friends and I are having a
blast colaborating on closed sourced software trying to figure out how they
did things and how we could make a better version... Maybe this is true with
other projects, but I like to keep myself focused on one project at a time
and by being in two either one will fail and the other succeed or both will
be hindered...

I think that adding more documentation will be something that I do if not
today then sometime this week. Hopefully in a weeks time the projet will be
clearer so that people can have a more indepth look into what I intend to do,
but till that time I'll keep chugging the coffee's back and playing April
Wine ;)

Hi!

I'm a free software supporter from Bulgaria and a Trisquel user too. I was

I just saw your message.

Unfortunately, I didn't go to any of your talks. There were many things to
do. If I knew you were going to discuss how free Firefox OS is, I would have
come.

I've actually might have overheard you talking to someone. I was in the main
hall, trying to upload test programs on an Arduino board I've soldered the
previous days. While doing this, I overheard too guys who I think were
talking in Romanian.

One of the guys said in English, that he is going to organize and event and
invite Richard Stallman. This caught my attention, since most people at
OpenFest didn't care much about the free software movement. Now I figure
that this was probably you. :)

I also did a lightening talk at the event. It was about LibTec: Libre
Technology Institute. A project I've started recently, that's involved in
education and development of libre technologies, such as free software.

You can contact to me at mar...@libtec.org, if you want to meet next time. :)

Making a Java program intentionally incompatible with the proprietary Java
interpreter from Oracle is not something I would encourage. Other than
OpenJDK not being readily available in binary form for Windows, it doesn't
improve anyone's freedom to intentionally cripple a Java program so that a
certain Java interpreter can't interpret it.

Usually video recordings are released some time after Openfest. There is
no official place for the clips as far as I know.

So far the most accurate lists were/are [1] and [2]. The first is in
Bulgarian and most of the links actually point to the second source.
Eventually the recordings might show up there or at YouTube.

The intention is not to make the program not run on non free Java, the
program will definitely be able to do that. The intent is rather to package
the program with OpenJDK to form an EXE. The reasoning behind this is that
most windows users do not know how to run a JAR (thats...really sad... but
true.), though they do know how to use EXE's, so I figured why not make it
even easier to use by making an EXE, and I mide as well throw a free edition
of Java in there too. If you don't want to use the EXE, you will have the
option to download the .JAR or even the tar of the .java files themselves.

The language is archaic, but it very clearly tells you to do what you want.
The WTFPL pretty much says the same thing with the same type of simple

Free software is not the same as freeware. Free software is about certain
user freedoms. It can be commercial or gratis.

Freeware is gratis. The instructions that make up a piece of freeware may be
free (freedom-respecting) or proprietary (secret).

Linux Mint exists because of the GNU Project's contributions to software
freedom. The GNU Project contributed the free software philosophy, and
practical things like a window manager, desktop environment, web browser, and
other stuff that we need for our computers to be useful. Linus Torvalds
contributed a piece too; the kernel Linux. Linux was originally proprietary
software; Linus later released it as GNU General Public License software.

How come you're using Mint? It has proprietary software in it. Operating
systems like Trisquel and gNew-Sense are free in the freedom sense, and will
work with the Snares Penguin hardware.

Thanks for posting the hardware review by the way.

[Trisquel-users] “badBIOS,” malware that jumps airgaps

2013-11-04 Thread stask
Ruiu said he arrived at the theory about badBIOS's high-frequency networking
capability after observing encrypted data packets being sent to and from an
infected machine that had no obvious network connection with -- but was in
close proximity to -- another badBIOS-infected computer. The packets were
transmitted even when one of the machines had its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth cards
removed. Ruiu also disconnected the machine's power cord to rule out the
possibility it was receiving signals over the electrical connection. Even
then, forensic tools showed the packets continued to flow over the airgapped
machine. Then, when Ruiu removed internal speaker and microphone connected to
the airgapped machine, the packets suddenly stopped.

With the speakers and mic intact, Ruiu said, the isolated computer seemed to
be using the high-frequency connection to maintain the integrity of the
badBIOS infection as he worked to dismantle software components the malware
relied on.

"The airgapped machine is acting like it's connected to the Internet," he
said. "Most of the problems we were having is we were slightly disabling bits
of the components of the system. It would not let us disable some things.
Things kept getting fixed automatically as soon as we tried to break them. It
was weird."

over. So I need it to be somewhat, user friendly. (He does not have any
idea on how to use terminal ect..)

I will probably dable more, but I do have a ceiling on what I can dedicate
for time for the learning curve each distro has when you move over. I HS my
son, as well as run a household, make nearly every meal at home, balance the
budget, maintain the computers and get all the shopping done.
One of the things decided on in 2010 was moving away from anything windows,
thus this is the first step in new hardware. my goal is for us all to move
over within the year, to *new* hardware and hopefully, as well, work to have
more distros under the belt.

Appreciate the suggestions. Thanks.
